When you stay at Planters Inn, you're in for a double 5-star treat. First up is the iconic Georgian Era Planters Inn itself with one of the most stellar locations right smack in the center of the heart and soul of historic Charleston. Its warm period décor is both elegant and beautiful at its best. The rooms are large, spotlessly clean with a snuggly teddy bear on the beds which you may purchase if you desire. The service is friendly and top-notch professional in every way, always attentive to your needs. And on all of this, you need not just take my word as Planters Inn Charleston was the winner of the coveted Travel + Leisure magazine's #1 Best Boutique Hotel in the United States Award and also recognized on Conde Nast Traveler Magazine's Top 100 Hotels List. The reason I mentioned a double 5-star treat is its adjoining garden and restaurant, the Peninsula Grill, which is the subject of a separate review. \

We had some initial issues our first night at the hotel, but the manager went above and beyond to make our experience exceptional. The Peninsula was fantastic and the service even better.

Planters Inn on North Market Street in Charleston and is in a great location. It is a beautiful hotel and exudes southern charm. All of the staff at the hotel was excellent and helpful. The hotel is absolutely beautifully appointed and there were so many nice touches from the coffee, cookies, lemonade and macaroons at night during our stay. Our room was clean, spacious and comfortable and the A/C worked great in the 90º plus heat in August. The bathroom was awesome with very nice fixtures. The grounds and lobby of the hotel are also lovely. We really like the location overlooking the Charleston Market and everything on the Peninsula is within easy walking distance. I would definitely stay here again when visiting Charleston.

Hubs and I went to Charleston for our babymoon. We decided on Planters Inn and we did not regret it. I will say check-in took forever, but we were upgraded to an amazing suite so it was worth it. The room was huge and gorgeous. The location is perfect for exploring Charleston. We were able to walk everywhere we wanted to go. They do offer valet at the hotel but we parked in the parking garage across the street instead. One of the evenings we were sent champagne and coconut cake from room service (adjacent Peninsula Grill) which was so sweet. It was a perfect hotel for our babymoon. Planters Inn is a splurge, but if you're looking for a stunning place to stay in Charleston - this is it!

Had a wonderful stay for a quick birthday getaway! The staff was fantastic. Everyone made me feel welcomed and was so accommodating. The room was spacious, clean, with nice decor. I LOVED the coconut cake and being able to enjoy a glass of wine in the courtyard.

Planters Inn is a Relais & Châteaux property. I follow and book with Relais for a couple of reasons. One is service and the second is more service. The properties in their portfolio are quaint and clean. Every time you turn the corner, you're greeted by staff who are doing everything they can to help and provide service that goes beyond expectations all in a very quaint setting.

Classic Charleston!! The sitting room is adorable with free coffee and cookies. The peninsula grill is to die for (check out the coconut cake)

    Welcome to Planter's Inn.

Although it wasn't cabana season or warm enough to get into the pool, the cabana room was really nice and clean. I thought the room was just so cute and loved how the entire hotel was decorated. I was still able to enjoy a couple hours sitting out in the sun by the pool during my stay. They offered an hour of complimentary champagne in the late afternoon which was a nice touch. The hotel has a nice cafe and restaurant attached so you don't have to go far to find some food and coffee. I definitely recommend this hotel and enjoyed our brief time there.

The Mills House is one of the truly classic Charleston hotels. It has gone through a lot of owners in its history. It has been an independent property, a Hyatt, a Wyndham and has had many other flags. Hilton has renovated it a bit but kept most of its eccentricities. The location on Meeting Street not far from King can't be beat. The staff is friendly and helpful. The food and drink are the main restaurant and bar, the Iron Rose, are good. The negatives include the plumbing. On two of the three days we were there over Christmas, the water in the shower was just lukewarm, and the water pressure came and went. The other main negative is the cost of parking, $60 a night. That's a Manhattan price, not what you'd expect in a mid-size Southern city. Still, we like the atmosphere and the history, so we'll stick with five stars.

There were a lots of bars, restaurants and shops within walking distance. They boast about their butler service, which is pretty unique in the United States (akin to the resorts in Mexico and the Caribbean). We only stayed one night and did not make the most out of it. Our butler was very pleasant and offered detailed recommendations regarding restaurants in the area. The staff is welcoming and friendly. We arrived early and had to wait a few hours until our room was ready. That was a slight nuisance as it was a cold and rainy October weekend in Charleston. Luckily they had plenty of umbrellas for us to use. The welcome cocktails were a nice touch when we were finally able to check-in. Other nice touches include the complimentary drinks, candies and snacks that were already waiting in the room. The turndown service also included chocolate and a small sweet alcoholic drink / shot. Lastly, the included room service breakfast in the morning elevates the stay. A lot of good things. However, I thought the rooms themselves were just okay and a bit dated. Our friends stayed at a boutique hotel with vaulted ceilings and its own kitchenette for less money. Another disappointment was that we booked a room with a small outdoor courtyard, but were given a regular room. Given the weather, we probably wouldn't have used the outdoor space at all, but it would be good to get what you paid for. Overall very good service and location. They have a nice bar by the lobby that we did not make use of. The rooms themselves are just okay and on the small size. I would probably stay somewhere else next time I visit Charleston, even though I have nothing bad to say about The Spectator. Maybe my expectations were too high with a 4.8 / 5 average Yelp score. I just think there's better value elsewhere.

You're only as strong as your weakest link…read more I've stayed in many hotels for both work and personal travel. The nice amenities, decent gym and friendly staff are what creates the environment for a pleasant experience. Two of these were met and the friendly staff, was mostly there. . .but one sour apple truly changed the course of our stay. Even my wife, who worked once upon a time in hospitality at Kiawah Resort, was started by the interactions from The Loutrel Hotel staff member. Long story short. The daily complimentary breakfast was served. I accidentally went to place the granola lid on the yogurt, my wife told me that was the wrong lid and I went to correct. From across the room the breakfast attendant yelled, "sir that doesn't go there." Startled, I immediately removed it and placed it accordingly. I laughed it off. Moments later I went to sit my breakfast down where my drink was located. Same attendant, "you're not even sitting at the right table with your wife." Again, my error, but don't call me out twice in one morning. It's a small lobby, so many staff members overheard the interaction. Nothing was done by other management. The next morning, I walked down to look at breakfast. I saw the same attendant and said, good morning. She looked at me but wasn't pleasant in her response. Unlike the rest of her colleagues at the restaurant who are polite and kind, the same customer service I expect and provide to my customers. Breakfast offered salmon with some type of eggs or shellfish. I can't eat shellfish, allergic. So, I went to grab a biscuit at a local coffee shop and a coffee. We came back to the hotel and sat our food down. The same rude attendant came over, nudged my wife in her back and said, "you can't have this here, cross contamination." So, I left. Allowed my wife to eat her yogurt in the area. Funny enough, my wife asked where the utensils were, because every table had them. Same attendant rudely, pointed to another table for her to get them. I should have just sat down and ate my food as I didn't see any signs for "no outside food." Either way, stay somewhere else. It's unfortunate that a hotel like this allows such rudeness from a staff member. I did report this to the manager, and online but was met with more passivity. Comped two nights of valet. Honestly, it wasn't enough. I would never stay here again and it ended the trip on such a sour note.
