I ordered a bowl of clam chowder and the BLT, while my friend went with the clam chowder bread bowl and a side salad. My chowder arrived well before my friend's bc they were still toasting her bread bowl. Unfortunately, enjoying my soup became a bit of a waiting game bc the soup spoon I was given was visibly dirty. I asked our server for a replacement, but it never came. By the time we asked another server for a spoon, my chowder had started cooling enough that a film was forming on top. Not exactly how I wanted to start my lunch. The chowder was still warm enough to enjoy. It was pretty flavorful, and I appreciated that there was a generous amount of clams. Nothing worse than potato chowder posing as clam chowder. Definitely not the case here. I also had a taste of my friend's bread bowl, and I can see why she enjoys that version. That garlic butter on the toasted bread definitely elevates things. Now, let's talk about that BLT. First off, I LOVE a great BLT. When our server brought mine out, my jaw dropped bc I was NOT expecting a double-decker sandwich. This thing was massive! I loved the use of heirloom tomatoes, but the basil aioli was a bit much for me. Each layer of bread had a hefty spread, and it completely overpowered the bacon. I eventually gave up on the sandwich as a whole and just ate the bacon and tomatoes. And that's when I realized they weren't using thick-cut bacon either. Next time, I'd definitely ask them to hold the basil aioli and give me good ol' mayo instead. Sometimes you just want your BLT to taste like a BLT. Despite a few misses with our lunch, I can appreciate what Trinidad Bay Eatery has going for it. It has that nostalgic, homey feel of a longtime mom and pop spot, and judging by the number of people waiting to be seated, they've clearly built themselves a following. Would I come back? Yes. There's enough on the menu that I'd be willing to give something else a try. And if that BLT special makes another appearance, I know exactly how I'm ordering it next time.

Situated directly above its own natural harbor, Trinidad is a small little fishing town with its own natural harbor with ten public beaches and lots of offshore rocks. I stayed here while exploring the Redwood Coast and had a nice time checking out this town. Things that I enjoyed doing here were hiking the Trinidad Head Trail Loop by the Lighthouse, early morning walks on the beach, and checking out some local art galleries. The locals were really nice everywhere I visited. There are a number are great places to eat and the views of the ocean are spectacular.

Asked about the happy hour and was told it's only at the bar and patio. Our table is literally between the bar and patio. Server said we can order at the bar and bring it to the table ourselves. Weird! At the bar, we waited patiently as there seemed to be a lot of confusion at the bar cashier and general chaos. There were swarms of flies EVERYWHERE. One even landed on my sister's face while talking! We finally got our drinks and he sent the tab back to the table anyway. What was the point of making us order at the bar? Even more weird! We ordered 6 oysters, but couldn't decide whether to get fresh or grilled. The server suggested both so my husband said sure. A dozen oysters came out. Way to upsell us. I tried to order a cocktail off of their menu and they were out of the ingredients on a Saturday night. I ordered grilled cheese off the bar menu for my four year old. They brought out pastrami panini instead. By the time the correct order came out, he was no longer interested in eating. Grilled cheese was untouched. There is only two bathroom stalls for both genders at this restaurant. One was out of order so there was only one working bathroom for both men and women. My four year old was bent over in pain waiting in line for the bathroom to open. Thankfully he didn't have an accident. When we left the restaurant, there were four people waiting in line to use the restroom. Yikes! After an hour of waiting for our entree to arrive, I was pretty annoyed, but the food was actually good so I was ready to brush all the other annoyances off. But then we asked for the check. The server says their system is down so they can only accept cash. We don't have enough cash to cover dinner for 8. After 15 minutes of waiting around, the server says she will take a check! We don't carry around our check book on vacation. After another 15 minutes of waiting, the server offers her personal Zelle. What a joke. No wonder there was so much confusion at the bar when we first sat down. It's been down this whole time and they never mentioned it! It would have been courteous of them to let us know BEFORE WE ORDERED that it was going to be cash only. Also, they took our credit card information when we made our reservation so they could have charged to it when the system was back up. The food was a lot better this time, but I'll never be back. It's too bad because the view really is gorgeous. The flies and bad service is enough of a turn off. We will keep an eye on our card statement to make sure they don't double charge us.

While it's not the motel's fault that some guests lack basic etiquette, a divider or barrier would go a long way in giving guests a bit more privacy. Top notch hospitality! Legend has it that the Tsu-rai Indians once used this beach as part of their summer camp. One day, a young warrior launched his canoe into the cold waters of the beach (Northern California beaches do not have warm water even in summertime!). He never returned and his grandmother waited so patiently for him on the beach that eventually, the gods took pity on her and turned her into a rock. You really can see her - sitting, huddled up, looking out to sea, and even her hair - in a bun on the back of her head. The "bun" even has some succulent plants growing out of it. You really don't have to use much of your imagination to see this striking image. Definitely worth a trip for some cool, northern California local flavor.

Just a few minutes south of Orick, CA is Stone Lagoon, a protected wetlands area nestled next to…read morethe 101 where the Pacific meets the NorCal redwood forests. A nondescript entrance off the 101 leads down to a beautifully empty sandy beach. Rocky outcroppings create a beautiful view, and beachcombers and driftwood hunters can find all sorts of treasures here. A long natural sand spit protects the lagoon (and the aptly named larger Big Lagoon to the south) and at certain times of the year, this is a great place to see all sorts of wading and shore birds, along with ospreys, pinnipeds, and occasionally otters. We enjoyed a little picnic here on the windswept beach, and walked around a little with the kids. We had the place to ourselves... always surprises me as a SoCal kid.

Ocean view and sound of sea lions is just incredible! Great sunset view and loved sleeping with windows open to hear the sea lions and the waves. A few "even better ifs" - I am never a fan of the Keurig coffee maker and good coffee on vacation is one of my very favorite things. A real coffee maker in the kitchen would be an amazing upgrade! If we come again, I might even just bring my own coffee maker. I loved the breakfast delivery! It was such a fun perk and my kids truly enjoyed it. Some sort of protein would have taken it to the next level - hard boiled eggs? Yogurt? All in all, would definitely go back! Trinidad is just lovely and Humboldt County is my favorite in CA!
