He gets everything arranged, gets you fitted with the right bike, and sends you out with a guide to get you through the forest on bikes. The guide we had today was Josh and he was very good! ( after biking he added his sweet dog, Annie, to the group for the rafting section!) along our biking he told us some fun facts about the Redwood Trees and some exotic plants! Our biking section of the day was GREAT! It is actually a perfect ride you start on pavement and then you end up on a gravel road with some uphills and some downhill but nothing super steep allowing you to take in the scenery. Can the forest be any more beautiful!! The trees are enormous!! Some have been burned, some struck by lighting, some both!! But they are still standing! After biking we drove to the Smith river where they laid out a great lunch! After lunch we geared up for river rafting down the Smith River, the only un-dammed river in California! It is spectacularly clear! Since we were here in June, the river was not super deep, but we did have some fun rapids and some really nice open spaces that were very mellow, allowing you to take in the scenery! For those more daring there is a stop where you can jump off rocks into the water. The rafting portion lasted about 2 to 3 hours. Our entire day started at 9:30 and we were done around 4 PM. The shooting involved expert SAFE instruction and a revolving set of varied experiences with different weapons. The children in attendance had the time of their lives as did this 74 year old horsewoman! The ranch is self sufficient ( off the grid) and well off the beaten path. A real community developed amongst the guests under the guidance and warm personalities of Heidi and Doug. The 30 plus years of love and devotion to the upkeep of the natural beauty of their ranch showed in the gardens and plantings of flowers and trees in abundance. Even the gaggle of teenaged sisters spent less time in the lodge (the only WiFi) than one would have imagined! A fun and deeply relaxing time in nature was had by all. Also, they give you exactly what is needed to paddle in Trinidad so you remain warm & comfy. I was so impressed with our guides, Nick and Alex, and their local knowledge of seabirds, marine mammals, and intertidal species. Whales are cool, but there are also a lot of other really cool animals & birds in Trinidad Bay. And these guides know just where to take you. They were not afraid to take us into a little rougher waters, when we asked them to, likely because they are so skilled and experienced. I also really appreciated all of the paddling guidance they provided making sure I was using my core/legs more than my arms. I was with a very large group and the guides handled everything with such class and professionalism. It is a step above any outfitter I've ever paddled with. We are really lucky to have them in Trinidad to help us access some of the most fantastic coastline along the California coast. They also do a great job interpreting the California Coastal National Monument! All of those rocks and islands are part of a statewide national monument that runs from the Oregon border south to Mexico! Wow! What a treasure. The first time we came to Bob, we showed up at around 2pm, and he suggested we skip out on kayaking for the day and come back the morning of the next day, due to the pick up in wind in the afternoon. As an alternative, he also suggested we go to the Trees of Mystery. After some conversation with my group, we decided we'll take up his suggestion, and thank goodness we did! We left to Trees of Mystery (which was a blast by the way) and came back the next day to go kayaking at 10am, as opposed to 2pm. Toward the end of the river journey in the afternoon, the wind became brutal to paddle against; precisely as Bob had suggested the day before. He is a straightforward and honest salesman, and just wants you to have the best experience possible. Curtis was also extremely helpful with anything we needed!

We had a very enjoyable ride down the river for a few hours and then were able to call Bob through the walkie talkies he provided and he met us at the pickup location and drove us back to our car on his property. My wife and I had a super fun trip on a full day trip down the French Creek section of the Trinity…read moreRiver. My wife floated down in the raft while I joined another group of kayakers following behind. This is a Class II trip, but with the big winter we just had the river is flowing fast and cold (51 degrees right now). Us kayakers wore wet suits and I was glad I did as I was "initiated " in the first rapid. I had trouble getting back in my raft so Libby and Joe helped me out. From there I mastered my technique to be sure I didn't head sideways into a rapid and stayed in my kayak the rest of the trip. It was a fun float on a beautiful river with top guides to match.
