We estimated we'd reach our lodging destination at a certain time but we like to leave room for side trips we stumble upon along the way (like this one). Moonstone Beach is not too far from Clam Beach. We've been to this part of the state before when we went on a tour of the Battery Point Lighthouse in Crescent City. The parking area is not a long walk from the beach -whew- and it was low tide at the time so it was nice. We walked all the way to the north end of the beach to the cave. Few people in November, some walked the beach, many brought their dogs to play and run around. There was some rock climbing going on too. Beautiful beach in Humboldt County! The tide was starting to come in as we were leaving... Moonstone Grill, a restaurant just up the hill you'll see before heading down to the beach, opened at 4:30p daily for dinner. Legend has it that the Tsu-rai Indians once used this beach as part of their summer camp. One day, a young warrior launched his canoe into the cold waters of the beach (Northern California beaches do not have warm water even in summertime!). He never returned and his grandmother waited so patiently for him on the beach that eventually, the gods took pity on her and turned her into a rock. You really can see her - sitting, huddled up, looking out to sea, and even her hair - in a bun on the back of her head. The "bun" even has some succulent plants growing out of it. You really don't have to use much of your imagination to see this striking image. Definitely worth a trip for some cool, northern California local flavor.

Hike to a Sea Stack Sheltered Cove…read more This is a hidden beauty but worth the hike to experience. Take the Trinidad Memorial Lighthouse stairs down to the beach or via Parker Creek Trail (off of the end of Parker Creek Drive). There is no parking lot or facilities so be prepared to hike a ways from your car and pack your trash out with you. Spectacular views (see pictures) of Trinidad Head, Trinidad harbor, the sea stacks and rugged cliffs surround you. At low tide you can wonder out on some of the rocks and see tiny marine creatures in their home. Driftwood and smaller rocks are plentiful, making decent wind shelters to relax and ponder the sea. Once the site of the ancient Tsurai Indian village the surrounding lands are still considered sacred and should be respected as such.

It was drizzling, but, I've been here a few times before on sunny days. NorCal beaches don't get SoCal scale beach crowds so parking is a breeze. No one really sets up for the day with their cooler either, even on the hottest of days here. It's calm and peaceful. There are small hidden tide pools nearby too. They're hard to find, but, we've located them twice now, so it can't be that hard.

Baker beach was a nice place to visit. It does have a bit of a trek down to the beach with a…read moreslightly steep path that leads down to steps and a makeshift ladder that you have to use to climb down to the beach. I recommend backpacks so you can keep your hands free. You will see many different people here from those taking advantage of the clothing optional experience or those taking a much needed smoke break with their bong (as it is Humboldt after all) or those attempting body boarding. You can also observe tide pools with beautiful sea creatures in them. Overall it is a nice place to come and relax just take your time on the trek back up to the mini parking lot.

It's always foggy and misty and sometimes it gets so…read morethick, you can't see the waves clearly from the vantage point of the parking lot, but you can hear the waves crash. It's eerie and beautiful at the same time. My kids like to climb rocks and there is no shortage here. I caution you, they've sustained injuries with small slips. Close by are small shops and a nice clam chowder restaurant. The beach is clean and parking is a breeze here too. It's little town beach vibes and easy access give this spot 5 stars.

We like off season travel. And added bonus is this place is right off of 101 making it super convenient for traveling. Most spots have full hook ups. Some just w/e. They have a cute little u shaped area for pop-up campers. Not all sites are super level. Some are pull thru and some back in. Some spots back up to 101 but we became used to the sparse traffic quite quickly. The tent sites are mostly very private. They are nice. Perhaps the neatest places to stay are the cabins. They look so inviting. Some have full kitchens which works out nicely since this very well stocked grocer, Murphys, is just down the street. It was a surprising find in a town of a little over 300 souls. They have a hot bar too! Nice people abound in this area. The little store onsite is also well stocked. There are toasty bathrooms available and the showers, if needed, are coin operated. Fair warning: if you use starlink, there are a ton of trees! There is a "bark park". We visited all the cities/towns in the area including the absolutely adorable Ferndale! We highly recommend the beach in Trinidad. Just stunning with tons of soft sand. We recommend Emerald Forest Cabins & RV.
