Great portions, great service. Friendly staff, and very lively place. People hustle and bustle, and the music choice is solid as well.

Here's the gist: Two-story bar with two bars, lots of bears and otters, strong drinks, dance floor upstairs, cash only, and no cover. My friends and I visited The Alley (Bar) two nights while visiting for Boston Pride events. The bar is literally in an alley between City Hall Ave and Washington St and you can get to it from either side, even though Google will tell you to enter only from the City Hall side. Both nights we visited (Friday and Saturday) the place had an energetic number of people without overcrowding. We tried to go to The Machine Nightclub on Saturday night, but the queue had about 200 people. Because the line did not move at all, on Saturday night we returned to The Alley. There's an ATM to the right after you enter because it's a cash-only establishment (annoying), and bouncer at the door to the left, checking IDs. No cover charge. The downstairs is a bar, two rows of booths, a bathroom, and a wall full of TVs playing music videos. One of the bartenders at the downstairs bar poured really strong drinks and at $7.50 each, we got a pretty sweet deal! The upstairs is a loft style where you can see down below, with seating area along the railing, a pool table, dance floor space, and another bar. Also upstairs, there was a DJ in the corner cranking out sick beats from all the decades. The second night the entire dance floor was obscenely sticky and dancing was not as fun, but we still very much enjoyed our time! Recommended!

This is probably the least gay "gay bar" I've ever been to in my life. Honestly it could be an Applebees. Maybe it used to be. There is absolutely nothing that makes this place special. There isn't even one pride flag anywhere. Extremely disappointing. We will never be back

Ask the Community - The Alley

Is the bar open to 18 or 21 and over?

21 and over. This bar caters more to bears and bear admirers so most young guys who aren't at least cubs might feel a bit out of place.

The wings were hands down the best we've ever had--and we're always on the hunt for great wings. The pizza was just as impressive, perfectly crispy and packed with flavor. Everything about the experience exceeded what we expected. The service was great. I think we had Liam as our bartender if I remember correctly. And the place had a cool vibe! We will definitely be coming back!

So we came to support our friend. Karaoke happens upstairs. We got a table and good thing we got there early before they start. It got crowded after 9pm. The DJ Michael was there and he sang a song and he has a nice voice. After that the judges each sang a song and they were all great too. We ordered food at the bar and they brought it to our table. I ordered the cucumber salad with chicken breast and it was good. The chicken was very tender and the veggies (cucumber and tomatoes) were crisp - it was quite a big portion too so good for dinner! Healthy and tasty. The chicken could use a bit more flavor though - it was quite bland. But still overall I was pleasantly surprised that it was good. The hubs ordered the chicken bacon panini with avocado and a side salad. He liked it. Our friend ordered the steak tips sandwich and he really enjoyed it he said the it was very flavorful and he was quite surprised how good it was! I guess it's good when you don't have high expectations ;) It was a fun night watching all the singers sing - they were all really good - one better than the next - really great talent!! Really enjoyed it! Will be back again sometime for singing karaoke!

I turned 22 yesterday and was very excited to spend the end of my night with friends at club cafe,…read morewhich I heard great things about. After waiting 30+ minutes in line, the bouncer saw I had 2 EMPTY shooters in my bag. I held up the shooters so he could see they were empty, and they were emptied over an hour before. The bouncer told me I should empty the bottles in a trashcan at the end of the street so that the police (who were near the entrance) didn't see me. Totally fine with me- I disposed of the bottles and returned tn the bouncer and the rest of my friends. The bouncer informed me that the policewoman saw me throwing out the bottles and I couldn't come into the club. This is complete bullsh*t on so many levels: 1. If it is illegal to go into an establishment with an outside beverage, my outside beverages were empty. This could be verified by bouncer 2. I am of legal drinking age. Not sure where in the Massachusetts state legislature it says that I cannot get into a bar after having some empty shooters in my bag at the shocking age of 22 3. This bouncer gave me his (albeit untrustworthy) advice to then completely disregard it and prevent me from getting into this club. On my birthday. Why on earth would you tell me to go to this trashcan and then not let me in. 4. Not really sure why you can't get into a club after disposing of a shooter. Does the city of Boston and/or state of Massachusetts ban individuals who had previously carried liquor in their bags (from hours before) entry into bars? Didn't think so. In summary, this was an extremely disappointing way to end what was otherwise a very fun night to celebrate my birthday. I wish I could've seen the club cafe vibes but unfortunately I was wrongfully denied with no legal basis. Wish I stayed at Clery's.

This is one of the worst nightclubs I have ever been to…read more There was a pretty popular DJ playing here that I was ecstatic to see, so I bought tickets in advance to go see them. It was also one of the official afterparties for Breakaway Mass. The ticket I purchased was also for "floor standing" btw. Little did I know that the "floor" I was expecting to be on when I purchased my ticket online was actually the entire vip area that was barricaded. So the actual dance floor where the DJ is, is ridiculously far from common areas that it just made it hard to enjoy. If that's how it was going to be, AT LEAST PUT THAT SOMEWHERE???? I never would have gone and wasted my time in the first place!! Extremely misleading. At least it was only $25. If you weren't in VIP, you had to be above the stairs next to the bar area and the sofas where there's even less space! Additionally, the crowd here is weak and rude. The workers seemed rude too. Everybody, including those on the dance floor were just standing and going on their phones, not a single person dancing. You needed a wristband to go down to the vip area, and I also noticed only a certain type of person was getting wristbands to go down there *cough cough* ANYWAYS, this was my first impression of Boston nightlife and it was clearly not a good one. At least this subpar experience was good for one thing: it's made me realize how ever-so grateful I am to be a socal resident where nightlife is much better and I will never take it for granted again so thank you :)

And if you like pina coladas and getting mocked in the face…read more Or however that song goes! Back in August me and my friends went out for a girls night only for the bartender to ruin it. I had drank my drink and thought the alcohol was a little low and asked if she could remake it. Instead of gently declining she said all the staff are required to pour a certain amount of liquor per drink and out of curiosity I asked what that amount was. She took it for attitude and asked "why, are you a bartender"... She then asked who made my drink and I pointed at a bartender on the other end then she took a stray pen and THREW IT at another bartender's head then ushered for them to come over. The bartender started whispering in their coworkers ear and for a good five minutes they stared at me, giggling, not acknowledging my request and mocked me as if we're back in high school... Later in the night my friend orders a round of shots and that same bartender who made it gave her attitude as well. The Grand, if you're going to hire High School staff, at this point just invite teenagers then. Never coming back, if you enjoy getting packed like sardines, smelling ball sweat and weed, and listening to cardiac arrest EDM beats. Well then, be their guest.
