    Gone Before Sunrise

Hidden speakeasy inside the restaurant. We didn't have a reservation and our party was rather large, with five of us. Nonetheless we were given a table to fit us all. Drinks were really creative. Bartenders made recommendations. Do yourself a favor and order Gone Before Sunrise. The best drink out of all the different ones we tried.

TLDR: How do I say "My home away from home" without sounding like an alcoholic? Okay, so their menu changed and they took Sichuan Panda off their menu!!! *cue the sesame oil tears streaming down my face*. BUT fear not because Roger has created something EVEN BETTER to replace it. It's called Eastern Standard Time. Please, give it a try. It's refreshing with a hint of umami. I'm a die-hard savory cocktail person, so I also tried their Girl Dinner, and while Charlie is like Rain Man genius when it comes to cocktails, this was too grassy/earthy for me. If you're a fan of green juices (or the earthiness of beets), this is up your alley. I thought it was a really cool concept, and the port wine sidecar definitely helped but, ultimately, this was not my favorite lol. Lost in Translation was like a liquid biscuit! It was a very desserty drink, which is exactly the kind of cocktail that my partner loves, so it was a match made in heaven. The sweetness of the taro root was well-balanced with the refreshing citrus aftertaste--and quite boozy because of the shochu and mezcal! I almost wanted to add boba to it to make it a meal. It's always so hard to come here for ONE drink--especially when they've just changed their menu! It would've been rude not to try at least 3. It was so hard to leave, and had it not been for our dinner resy, we would've stayed for more. We'll be back soon!

Highly recommend! Such a great spot. The dim lighting with the dark wood decor is very intimate, warm, and cozy. Perfect for a date who you want to get to know more/want more one on one time. The customer service is top notch and so are the drinks. My best recommendation is to ask the staff their favorites or something that fits your profile. They have a lot of good options.

As you all know, I am a speakeasy, cocktail joint kinda guy and the Alderman has been on my list to hit-up for about a year now. Me and a friend stopped by on a recent Friday evening to take in some good cocktails and vibes. Alderman is located within the very popular Pilsen Yards restaurant on 18th St and reservations can be made via Open Table. Just an FYI, parking is hell over here so drive at your own risk...Uber or public trans would be your best bet. Once seated, they provided us with a very sweet, complimentary welcome drink. Tasty but sweet! Menu looked good with so many interesting cocktails. Im a mezcal lover so the Chopped & Screwed was very much recommended by the cool server dudes we had. The cocktail includes italian red bitters, genepy, lemon myrtle and an ice ball with a flower in it...very good! I also had the Mezcal Negroni which was pretty good. My friend got the daiquiri and it was much different than your usual daiquiri...very good! My only issue here is that everything is batched...I prefer my drinks to be made fresh, but they make it work. They seemed to not be able to make a sidecar for her as she requested...all good though. Music can be loud but they place some dope joints (Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, etc...) Love the vibe and the lit candles as it sets a very sexy mood. I would definitely come back and try again. Good for dates, groups and solo drinking.

This place was really cool. It was really a hole in the wall. Very small space and the decor was classy and swanky. The drinks were very unique and tasty. Service was great as well. The ingredients were very different and you don't see many of them everywhere. Would definitely go back.

The Alderman nestled in Pilsen Yards is a dimly lit intimate cocktail bar with a breadth of international flairs to original cocktails. The owner is passionate and extremely friendly. Highly recommend you try this place out!

I have been to the Alderman several times now and I am never disappointed. The drinks all have creative spins whether it's a classic or seasonal cocktail. The bartenders are very friendly and accommodating and are happy to walk you through the menu. You are always greeted with a small welcome drink which is a nice element. The entire bar smells amazing and is overall just a really elevated experience. I love this spot!

This cocktail bar was amazing! The decor, the music, everything was perfect. The bartenders Roger and Ceasar were perfect, they were so knowledgeable about the various types of liquors and the ingredients that went into each cocktail it was so insightful and refreshing! I had a variety of handcrafted cocktails from the Gone before sunrise to the Glass Garden Milk Punch, they were all great! I would recommend this spot to anyone!

Ambiance was very cool and moody. We received welcome cocktail which I enjoyed more than the cocktail I ordered.

I had previously tried getting reservations here in the past, but had been unsuccessful. This bar has limited seating and you ideally should try to book a reservation here at least a few days in advance if possible. My husband and I had planned to be in the area for dinner, so we decided to also book a reservation here for an after-dinner drink. Soon after we arrived, we were brought to our seats at the bar. The welcome drink was a nice way to start the experience. We both enjoyed the opportunity to speak directly to the owner of the bar and another bartender. Several cocktails caught my eye, but I stuck with whiskey focused cocktails during my visit. The Whimsy Old Fashioned, Private Label Old Fashioned, Trifecta, and Raised by Wolves were all outstanding. The menu also includes several other cocktails that feature rum, gin, sake, cognac, etc. Most cocktails were priced around $16 and felt fairly priced.

Perfect night cap after a good dinner at the connected restaurant. Nice vibe, small, dim and intimate. Great service and excellent cocktails, reservations recommended. My whiskey cocktail came with a marshmallow that the waiter roasted at the table, it was so delicious I asked for a 2nd one. I will definitely return.

Place is hidden within another restaurant which gives off that unique experience. As you can see from the interior it is a very sort of intimate close setting where you can really interact with the bartender. Let me say that the bartender we had provided top notch service, giving the best recommendations (he literally created the menu). Every drink we had was completely incomparable to a normal bar. One drink was the sichuan panda which had Sichuan peppercorn and sesame oil in it. Now at first that did not sound right to me but it actually works! For the purple pisco sour, there was a nice foam on top that added to the sweetness. Near the end the bartender gave us complimentary tequila shots and felt like I was conversing with a long life friend even though we only just met. A plus is the music as well. Felt that the tunes really matched the environment of the place!

This was such a fun bar! It's definitely a sexy, date bar inside of Pilsen Yards. The host walked us in and gave us a run through the bar and the menu. The bar tender then came with complimentary welcome drinks and guided us through the menu again, letting us know he can also go off script. I went with the Indienne and my friend got the Paul's Walls. However, they were low on ingredients for his drink so they gave him a complimentary bit which he did not enjoy. He then Went with their interpretation of a gin a tonic which was interesting and tasty! My cocktail was also delicious and not what I expected. I would definitely return and try more.

It was no wonder when we arrived that there was a line out the door. We waited around 45 minutes, and the bouncer was a really nice fellow who kept track of the numbers and people at the door. Upon entering, we were immersed in a dimly lit retro-style lounge. It was quite loud inside and packed as we walked to our seats. The server was great at taking our orders and offering suggestions. I opted for the French 75, which featured sparkling wine and mixed gin, brandies, and citrus. The drink was delicious, but STRONG. I don't know what they put in the cocktails in America, but I am always finished after one drink. Needless to say, we were all struggling to finish our own drinks. My favourite touch was the coasters, I ended up keeping all of them so that I can reuse them at my galentines event next year. The 'bisous' with the kiss on the other side is a perfect touch! I think the drinks are fairly priced for USD. I would love to return someday to try other drinks and bar bites, and also try their sister bar, Sparrow.

Imagine my shock when we didn't even make it past the bouncer because he was so rude, AS OTHER RECENT REVIEWS HAVE MENTIONED AS WELL! We had dinner nearby and walked to Bisous after, and saw there was a line of 5 or 6 people outside. We expected this as we knew Bisous is a first come, first serve bar. We were curious what the wait time would look like, so we approached the front door to ask a host or employee inside (we assumed there'd be a desk with an employee working it who could give us a wait time). We had no problem waiting, just wanted to see how long they estimated it would be! Before we could even fully open the door, the bouncer swung the door open from the other side and hit me with the door. I stumbled back a few steps and he looked at us and said, and I quote, "What do you want?". I laughed at first because I thought he was joking and putting on a tough guy act. He was not. We quickly explained we just wanted to see what the wait time was, and he said "don't you see there's a line outside?" We said yes, and explained we just wanted to know a rough estimated wait time. He just blankly stared at us while ushering us out. Both my boyfriend and I have worked in customer-service roles for a very, very long time. This encounter was not only extremely rude and unprofessional, but he also hit me hard enough with the door to send me stumbling back, and then said nothing about it and continued to address us in a tone that was nothing less than annoyed and irritated. We didn't end up going inside because that encounter left such a bad taste in our mouths. I don't believe in spending my money at establishments that don't treat their customers with the bare minimum respect they deserve! Bummed we didn't get to experience it, as I'm sure it was lovely inside and I can only hope the rest of the employees were much more kind and accommodating, or at least able to answer a simple question. Fire your "bouncer" (??) and hire someone with some basic customer service and communication skills!!

We made a reservation ahead of time, which I'd definitely recommend, but it wasn't overly packed and we were seated without any issues. The vibe in there is top tier. Dim lighting, live music energy, and just the right mix of chill and upscale. It's the kind of place where you can actually enjoy the atmosphere without feeling rushed. This was my second time here and I remember it being just as good back in 2022. The drinks were immaculate. I had two mocktails that were both well-balanced (not overly sweet, which I appreciate), and he ordered an old fashioned. You can tell they take their bar program seriously and can go beyond a gin & tonic. Overall, it was a really good time. It can give you a great midweek outing or a laid-back night with a little something.

People were standing right behind me to order drinks; I didn't feel overly crowded by any means but some who aren't used to that kind of bar/clubby vibe might feel that way. The music was a little loud to be heard over all the folks there, but I wasn't talking to anyone so it didn't bother me (was just sitting and reading a book). The bartender was really nice and attentive despite the fact that the place was so packed. I had a drink called the "Gentle Fish" which the bartender rec'd as a sweeter/more floral drink. Admittedly it was a little strong, but the flavor was nice! It was different from most other drinks I've had, and I enjoyed it. Was strong enough I definitely did not need another though. Of note, this place is downstairs under "The Hoxton" hotel, there's no entrance directly to the bar from the sidewalk/street (you have to enter the hotel lobby, then follow the signs toward the back and go down the elevator and/or stairs). There is a person who checks your ID when you enter and seats you if seats are available. The bathrooms were very clean. Not sure about parking but street parking is definitely very limited; I imagine a paid lot would probably be the easiest thing or taking the train from wherever you're staying if you can (which is what I did).

The vibe is speakeasy-ish; the entrance is off the street in an alleyway but the interior is very nice, low light, and would be fun for a date night! The staff were attentive and very friendly. My friend got some shots, which were surprisingly good given they were kind of sweet, and I ordered the "mystic lamp" cocktail ($16) which was VERY memorable to me as someone that loves floral drinks -- it was very floral, slightly fruity, and had a lovely chunk of lychee it came with which was delicious! The drink was decent sized too; I've been charged a lot more for much less drink at other speakeasies (those of which I don't plan to visit again any time soon haha). In my opinion, this spot has the perfect combo of great drinks, nice ambiance, cool speakeasy-vibes, but also cheerfulness given the tiki-theme inside. I was excited for the experience having heard how busy it gets, blah blah. These positive reviewers need to seek out other tiki bars. After you negotiate the alley entrance and go down dangerously dark stairs, you are met with crazy boring decor. I kept thinking there had to be more right? The whole point of a tiki bar is to strike a mood, but hanging a very few polynesian masks on the wall, putting up a grass facade over the bar and dressing the servers in vaguely polynesian outfits is sad. I've seen private tiki bars at people's homes that are more exciting. Add to this a comparably boring music selection played far too loud over boomy lo-fi speakers and you'll wonder what's going on here. So what about the food and drink? Completely uninspired for anyone who's had more than a mai tai before in their life. About a dozen extremely common drink choices is all you get!! No specials, that's it. When I asked if this was the whole cocktail menu, the server said it was but they have a full bar so you can get anything you want. Well, I could get that service at just about any bar in the world, so big deal. Maybe it would be better if you sat at the bar and chatted up the bartender. One could also go taste their rum selections and other cocktails in the Bamboo Room, but I hate that kind of elitist nonsense. That's never been what tiki bars were about. The drinks we sampled were okay at best. Even the namesake 3 Dots and A Dash cocktail was lackluster and used cheap cherries for the dots instead of classic Luxardos. (If you know, you know) The appetizers were okay, but way overpriced. 5 tiny spring rolls for $18. Come on guys, enough already. I'd rather go to the bar at the Polynesian Hotel at Disney than return here. This place is a hard pass.
