My cautionary tale is about both a business and a service. Ladies, if you were ever thinking about lash extensions, don't do it. Anywhere. It's largely an unregulated industry and even if you have lashes a long time, you can still end up with problems (Google it). I went to The Afterlash June 21st. I had constant eye irritation, ending in a potentially disfiguring reaction from low grade adhesive allergens all within 3 weeks. I also had the worst customer service experience of my life with the owner, Shireen, once I requested refund. All of a sudden, there was no empathy or compassion in her. Only mean. You can tell a lot about a business by the quality of service it provides when things go wrong in a customer situation. Unfortunately, I feel traumatized by Shireen's unprofessional and outright despicable handling of my situation to the point where I have lost sleep and am up in the wee early morning hours writing this review. Lash adhesive often has formaldehyde. This causes a lot of problems. I was not given a list of ingredients nor warned about this. I also didn't see any licensure for technicians on the wall either time I was there. I should have heeded my first thought when I saw this lack of regulation and walked right out. I didn't, and paid with my health. The lash adhesive caused my eyes to burn despite being carefully cleaned. I ended up with a kind of sty which, if I don't respond to antibiotics, will need surgery to remove. I am on both antibiotic eyedrops 4 x day and oral doxycycline 2x day for 7 days. I also have to constantly massage and put hot compresses on the area. Shireen's emailed response (we never met in person) to me was absolutely awful. She cared more for her tech getting paid than about my health & safety. When I learned that I was facing disfigurement because of the adhesive, Shireen said it "wasn't fair" to issue me a full refund when her tech had done all that work. She blamed me for not keeping my lashes clean (?) Yes, I had. When I pointed out that in my first email to her, I had advised the adhesive had caused the problem *before* the sty, I said that it 'wasn't fair" for me to miss out on work, take antibiotics, and face potential surgery. *Noteably-I don't wear makeup regularly, I'm more of a skin care person. Shireen begrudgingly said she'd give a full refund and said she'd pay for my antibiotic copay of $20...but she didn't leave it at that. Instead, Shireen felt it necessary to be passive aggressive and outright mean in her emails rather than just issue me the refund she'd agreed to - and just stop there. I have a less than delightful email exchange where she became nasty and petty. Shireen's first response, and I quote, " I'm very sorry that you feel the need to take it this far for $160. Let me know if you paid by credit and the last four numbers for a refund." My first question to myself was, What kind of ethical esthetician says something like that? Shireen then short paid the $20 by $0.88 cents (by including the paypal fee). This was the medicine copay she'd agreed to pay. There was no need for her to say "forced payment for "prescription copay" on it. I am still waiting on the $161 refund. When I asked when that was showing up, Shireen said, "Brenda, I have no idea. You can ask Square." Um. They're her service-she doesn't know? FYI If you aren't a member of Square, you don't get to talk to a live person. I tried. Shireen sent me screenshots of a refund confirmation that I now figure she canceled. What an awful situation to have to deal with. When I wrote a review on our community Facebook page, Shireen called me upset because customers called asking why she handled me so badly. She never once asked if I was ok and remained unhelpful. She just wanted to argue with me. I hung up on her because arguing without solving for a different solution accomplishes nothing. It's a revolving door to a closed argument. If you're an existing AfterLash customer, God help you. Should something go wrong, Shireen won't take care of anything except her bottom profit line. I filed a complaint with the CA Board of Barbers & Cosmetology. If you're a new customer, here's my tips: * Make sure the aesthetician who is doing your eyelash extensions has valid certification. * Ask to see the ingredient list on the adhesive being used and check for potential allergens like formaldehyde. * Make sure your aesthetician is practicing good hygiene, including washing his or her hands thoroughly and wearing gloves. *If you do notice signs of infection, see an ophthalmologist as soon as possible. My ophthalmologist does not recommend lash extensions and had seen eye injuries like mine before. So if you have a sty, go in to the doctor. Don't wait. And file a complaint with the state. **Edited 7/15: Shireen disputed the $20 paypal; says she didn't receive the receipt sent to her. She can't stop being mean. I also won this dispute. read more

I kind of consider myself a lash extension expert. I've gotten good lash extensions, I've gotten HORRIFIC lash extensions, but Shireen's lash extensions are SUBERB. I have several criteria on which I base lash extension services. The first really has to do with me. I have a kind of obsessive compulsive tendency to pick, so if I can feel the lash adhesive, I'll pick the extensions (along with my lashes) right out of my lash follicles. At the AfterLash, I can't feel the adhesive when I close my eyes or when I wash my face, so picking is not a problem. The lashes both look and feel so incredibly natural that all of my lashes have grown back and my eyes are happy again (hooray!). This leads to my second criteria: staying power. With other lash extensions, I've had to go for lash fills about every two weeks. I think this is partly because of the fact that I was compelled to pluck off my other extensions, but also due to the nature of the adhesive usage. I think the other extensions I have received were considerably more brittle, causing them to fall out quicker with everyday use and regular showering/face washing, etc., and leaving that chicken-foot look old lashes get when they need a fill and there are only a few odd ones left. At The AfterLash I get fills every three weeks, but even at the end of week three I still look good... No chicken-foot eyes anymore! And finally, you can spend a long time with your estetician getting a lash fill, so it's important you all get along and you have a pleasant environment to spend your hour and a half or two hours together. All of these things are true at The AfterLash. Some days I come in a little sleepy and I take a nap. Some days Shireen and I chat and chat the entire time. Some days I end up bringing my two children with me and Shireen is very welcoming and accommodating of them as well. The office is comfortable and cute. I can't say enough good things about Tini and The AfterLash. She has literally changed my life in terms of shortening my daily beauty routine and making me feel better about the make-up free version of myself as I age. I started at a nail salon (bad idea) then did my research and went to another lash place and was there for awhile, but my lasher left the company and the owner handled the departure in an odd fashion (sent me an email the day before my appointment and instead of having someone else do my lashes, she said the lasher had left so my appt was cancelled and if I wanted to re-book to contact her). That didn't sit right with me, so I followed the lasher. Ladies, finding a good lasher is akin to finding a good hair stylist! My lasher eventually moved to SF but she referred me to Shireen, told her the lash formula that she uses on me and made the transition seamless. I'm so glad she did. Shireen is amazing!! I've been going to her since Nov 2015 (every 3 weeks like clockwork) and she has consistently provided the same quality of service and care. I always get compliments on my lashes on how "natural" they look. Even when I'm about to get a touch up, people still compliment how good they look!! She creates this zen comfortable vibe in her lash studio (I always end up falling asleep during my appointment which is kind of embarrassing because I'll jerk myself awake LOL and then apologize because she's doing meticulous work of glueing extensions on each individual lash!). I just saw a negative review below which strikes me as rather odd. If you ever get the opportunity to meet Shireen, you'll see why. She is a gentle soul, super kind, and always accommodating. The review complaining about a sty leading to "potential disfiguration" is a laughable exaggeration. If you use basic common sense, care for your lashes by washing your face regularly to keep your eyes and lashes clean, you'll enjoy beautiful lashes. Hygiene 101. Okay so I've been to this establishment a total of three times and tried two different people so I feel like I can give an accurate review... The atmosphere is a 5/5. The only complaints that I have is that are the following: 1. They never answer the business line. I've tried to call numerous amounts of times and could never get anyone to answer. 2. I feel like it's important for a lash technician to analyze your lashes and tell you what's best for your individual lash type. I was informed about volume lashes after the fact of already installing the normal ones which for my particular lashes(3rd visit) did no justice because I do not have enough of my own lashes. I felt like a really good lash technician would be like "hey what you selected to get done isn't a good fit for your lashes so instead of you wasting $140 let's reschedule or let me do the volume on your lashes for an extra fee." At least then I would feel like it wasn't about the money but instead about having your client look the best for the service that truly fits. I am not happy with my lashes they fall off rather quickly, this is day 5 and I've lost a good amount while I followed the clear instructions to not get them wet, etc., Long story short I will not be going back bc I am looking for a lash technician that will look at the client as an individual and do what's best for that This Is in response to Shireen Y. comment: I actually came to after lash on December 27th 2018 which clearly was less than 6 months ago and saw Ericka for this consultation. Before that your mother Cathleen did my lashes twice. Upon my last visit It was brought to my attention that AfterLash had updated your booking site or something of the sort which is why my previous visits weren't accessible and I had to create an entire new account to do so. If you do not believe that I was there on the 27th please check with phoung because I was actually like 15 minutes early and she let me in to wait for Ericka to arrive.
