Perfectly made martini
Kim L.

A dear friend is now a regular at The Abbey, and I finally was able to make it there to see why. I am definitely going back! First, the service - you walk in and are immediately greeted and suggested to sit where you like. I sat at the bar as I know my friend is also a bar-sitter. I said I was there to meet him and they all said, oh, we know him! And before he arrived they started to make his drink. But I digress. He goes for the talented bartender - Oliver - and the drink - The Last Word. I also enjoyed watching Oliver make drinks - a consummate pro. I sipped the Last Word but truly enjoyed a very well-made and shaken vodka martini. The room is amazing, with all kinds of great stuff to check out - things that could engage conversations for days. My friend is also a fan of the banana cream pie with pistachio crust - again I had a taste and it was amazing. I now fully understand how The Abbey is a James Beard bar winner and can't wait to return!

Looking for a European-feeling cafe in Brunswick? Looking for a place you can spend hours at comfortably solo with a book and a coffee? Looking to have a nibble and a mocktail or cocktail with friends? The Abbey has it (and more). The vibe: relaxed, warm, mid-modern meets minimalism, gorgeous stained glass windows, lots of natural light pouring in, the most comfortable seats you've ever sat in at a high top, lots of wood and greenery, a playlist that makes you stop and lean in. It's a cozy place that makes you want to stay a while. The drinks: I tried an iced cardamom latte with oat milk and it was fantastic (if you've ever had the vanilla cardamom cold brew coffee from Trader Joe's, it was an elevated version of that). I've also had a couple cocktails - since they make their syrups in house when they run out, they run out and your drink might be unavailable... BUT the staff is exceptional at making alternate recommendations and even making totally off menu drinks entirely! The food: Several (clearly labeled) vegan options! We tried the muhammara (a housemade dip topped with spiced walnuts, chickpeas, and three half slices of toasted sourdough) and the hummus plate (housemade and topped with marinated chickpeas and a drizzle of olive oil, accompanied by six naan wedges). LOVE the quantity of both dips, but wish there was some other dipping vessel outside of (the sometimes stodgy) bread. A little heap of rainbow veggies would be amazing! While the muhammara was a bit more liquidy than I've had elsewhere, the hummus was thicker than I was expecting. Solid shareable options regardless! (Grab a seat, order at the counter, and they'll call your name when your drinks are ready so you can go grab them; if you've ordered food, they'll bring that to your table. It was confusing what the clean-up situation was, several of us just sort of walking back to the bar with our plates and cups.) Excited to return again!

Stopped by for coffee but could not pass up the last cinnamon donut bread pudding. Oh! My! Gosh! It was delicious!!! My latte was so good but I will dream about that bread pudding. Yes, it was that good. Love the vibe - inside and out. I will definitely be back.

First visit here. Met a colleague for coffee and tea and found the overall experience very pleasant. The beverages were good, the space inviting and the staff friendly. I will definitely come back to try more of what they offer since I have heard their cocktails and food are very good.

Creative options are always on the seasonal menus.

Creative tasty cocktails & food in a cool welcoming vibe! There's always something delicious on the seasonal menu. Love, love, love that they're a coffee shop in the morning, & a cool bar in the evening. Spacious dining room is kid-friendly, so parents can enjoy it, too. Service is attentive & friendly. Fantastic addition to downtown Brunswick! This week, we devoured: 1. Pulled pork w/ a saffron spread felt like a nod to Vietnamese banh mi sandwiches. 2. Summer salad w/ veggies shaved into delicate ribbons & lightly dressed. The culinary creativity is put into intentional vegetarian options, where the focus isn't just on the carnivores. 3. Deviled eggs are always a winner. This one had pickle seasoning. 4. Pulled chicken hand pie w/ tzatziki. 5. Tuna crudo w/ a black garlic sauce gives the perfect flavor that's not overpowering. 6. Harissa wings w/ a bleu cheese remoulade

Highly recommended. The Abbey brings a much needed high end (but not expensive) cocktail bar vibe to downtown Brunswick! Spacious but comfortable space, with tables, bar, a space for music, and open windows to Maine st. Owner Laney and her partner bring a deft hand to craft cocktails, with an ever changing list. Their small kitchen kicks out a tapas style menu. It's limited to what the kitchen can do, they don't over reach, and what they deliver is delicious. Last night the mussels were a standout. Check this place out. I for one will keep coming back.

Pretty good

Nice spot, drinks were ok. Service was good. We only had a couple snacks but what we had was tasty. The waitress was kind and swapped out drinks we did not care for, overall would recommend stopping in for a cocktail and giving The Abby a shot.

The issues were glaring though. We arrived early for a group reservation of 10 and started at the bar. The service was very slow and we got the sense that the bartender was frustrated that we showed up early with the idea to have a cocktail before our reservation. Bar service continued to be painstakingly slow throughout the night. The restaurant was somehow out of several of their menu options (despite the restaurant not being busy on a weekend day). Not the end of the world, but it left us asking some questions. The major issues really arose when our entree courses were served. They had somehow ran out of french fries, and you could see that in the portion size of the frites in our steak frites (the picture included in our review was our plate -- we had BY FAR the most fries out of those at the table who ordered steak frites). And they ran out of steak - one of the people at our party who ordered steak frites was served a hamburger (which isn't even on the menu). Overall, I thought that we overpaid for the food and if it wasn't for the good company at our dinner - I would have been very frustrated.

I was born and raised in Maine and come back a couple times a year to see my mom here in Brunswick…read more I hadn't been yet to the Ram and Bull which took over a previous restaurant spot, and decided to give it a try based on the fact that one of their weekly specials was lobster stew. Let me be clear, I am typically disappointed over and over by the lobster stew I have in Maine. In my mind, it should be classic, with milk, butter, Sherry, and lobster meat. I've been searching for this version from my childhood for the past 30+ years and I finally found it here. Have they added a tiny garnish of rosemary to the top? Yes. Does it make me angry or detract from the sweet perfect flavors of the stew? No. And the lobster meat in the stew was tender, as it should be, rather than having simmered way too long and being tough and chewy. Their crabcakes also were nice and generous, although I don't love the spicy remoulade (I feel it's too strong for delicate crab flavor) and the texture was a bit soft for me. I'm looking forward to being back during my stay and trying more items from the menu! Oh, and don't sleep on the service here, it was excellent. From several people asking me how my meal was or just saying hello, to the amazing Travis behind the bar with his big fabulous personality. Yay!

The place was NOT busy and everything came out at the same time. Huge faux pas. After that, our server must've visited us a dozen times asking if we needed thing. I jokingly said "we're good just leave us alone" It's a huge turnoff to be hounded and not have your orders timed appropriately. ‍sorry not sorry. You wanna be semi-fancy, your service needs to reflect that Now food. I ordered the Porchetta Bahn Mi, friend had a wild rice beet salad? The app was fried pickles. Bahn Mi was ok. Every "handheld" is served on brioche so that was a bit of a turn off for a Bahn Mi. Half the part of them being delicious, is the bread itself. I didn't taste the friends salad but looked inviting. The pickles didn't seem cooked enough? Not very crispy. Maybe that's why everything came out all at once. I might give this place another chance
