Local Hayden Island spot. Great coffee and cheesecake. Owner is great and would recommend to anyone local to the island or visiting!

The Stacks Coffeehouse - Breakfast tacos

The Stacks Coffeehouse

The Stacks Coffee House is such a vibe and very much a "get in, lock in, and accidentally stay for…read morethree hours" kind of place. Wall to wall books, ceiling to floor cozy chaos, people on laptops doing serious focus work, and that soft lighting that makes you feel like you should absolutely be writing your novel or at least answering emails you've been avoiding. The community board alone is a whole moment... flyers everywhere, local artists, creatives, events, it basically tells you everything going on in the neighborhood if you just stand there long enough. Coffee is solid, space is super welcoming, and yes they do vegan pastries but they were sold out when we got there which just tells you everything you need to know. Popular for a reason. Love the energy, love the people, love the "we support local creatives and also mind our business" vibe. Highly recommend if you want a cute spot to work, people watch, or just feel like you're part of something a little more community centered.

If you love the idea of sipping coffee while surrounded by shelves of books, Stacks Coffeehouse is…read moreworth checking out. The vibe is cozy and a little mysterious thanks to the dim lighting and, as mentioned, shelves upon shelves of books. The space is definitely designed for lingering - there are plenty of tables to work or study from, bar seating with a view of the street, and space for small and larger groups. Depending on the day, you may not get a seat or at least not your preferred seat. Of course, as mentioned, one of the quirks here are the books everywhere. They have signs saying that they loan them out like a library, but to me it doesn't look like the books are organized in anyway. So it might be more for atmosphere than practicality. Food wise, they serve breakfast tacos until 1pm, and there's a good pastry selection, plus day-old baked goods available for half price. They do $1 drip coffee refills, but the coffee wasn't my favorite. All in all, great place for the vibe. Free street parking nearby.

I'm always very opinionated and talkative in my Yelp reviews. I have a lot to say about food. But…read morecoffee I don't have much to say about. I dunno how to explain it. I just have trouble with it. The coffee at Koken was fine, I guess. It's strong. But what does that even mean? First I had it and it was pretty strong. Then I asked them to add more milk and it was a little too weak. So isn't it the amount of milk that matters? And isn't that very variable? Anyway, the reason why I came here is because I asked a barista at a different coffee shop what her favorite other coffee places are, and she immediately said Koken is her favorite. That's gotta count for something. But as I started saying, I'm more of a food person than a coffee person. And I got a dish here that I really, really liked. I forget what it was called. Their menu isn't online, so I can't look it up. Which is kinda refreshing. It's basically little pieces of bread that are sauteed/fried in some sort of African butter, with an African spice blend, and eaten with yogurt. And it was absolutely perfect. The warm, chewy, spiced bread with the cool, tart yogurt is just so great. Such a good combo. Simple. Not distracted by a bunch of other stuff. You really just get that wonderful contrast. The bread was perfectly chewy. And had a little bit of a crisp on the outside, in a perfect way. Check out the picture. Ultimately, it was just so homey, so satisfying, and so novel. It's like an hour long trip on public transit for me to get there, but I don't care. I know that I will be back.

A kinda cozy little place for a quiet cup of coffee. Very janky which I like but others might not…read more It's like a porch attached to a trailer lol but they've got some big old cool lookin coffee machines (I don't drink a lot of coffee) by the entrance. I tried one of their food dishes called Fuul (Eritrean vegetarian stew) made of chopped onions, tomato, peppers, cheese, egg and beans. All of the ingredients were fresh and tasted good but it just tasted like bean dip. I mean the best bean dip I've ever had in my life but that wasn't what I was going for I had no chips lol.

This was my second time at Proud Mary! My first visit was back around 2018 during a road trip with…read moremy sister, and I remember us loving this café even then. So when I was back in Portland, I knew I had to come again. It does get pretty busy, but i only waited about 10-15 minutes. They have outdoor seating and a cute pickup window for to-go orders, but I definitely prefer sitting inside for the full experience. I ordered an iced matcha latte sweetened with honey, which was really good. For food, I got the avocado toast with two poached eggs and it was LOADED. The avocado comes in bigger chunks, the creamy spread was delicious, and the corn added the perfect little touch of sweetness. All the flavors worked so well together. I also got a side of hash, which was a pretty generous portion. It needed a little salt for me, but they have salt and pepper right on the table, so easy fix. Little tip: ASK FOR THEIR GREEN HOT SAUCE. OMG. So much flavor! It's not overly spicy, just the perfect kick, and it made everything even better. I actually asked if they sold bottles because I would've taken a few home with me, but sadly they don't. They also have a selection of baked goods that looked great, so that's on my list for next time. Service was quick and everyone was friendly. Years later and Proud Mary is still just as good as I remembered. Definitely one of my Portland favorites!

Came to Proud Mary on the rainy Sunday morning for brunch. Overall impressions: meh, there's better choices for coffee than this. Cappuccino was okay, I didn't think much of it. Their Pourover menu is pretty long and quite pricey. I think they average about $10-15 per drink and the most expensive was $26 (!!!) Hubs ordered the Ruiru 11 & SL28 Ruarai AA -- definitely acidic from the grapefruit & blackcurrant, but I personally didn't think it was worth $9 or that it tasted good. And onto dining in...we were seated at the bar/counter: -Hubs ordered the Turkish Eggs after the seeing it ordered from the party next to us. This was decent, very dill-heavy and quite a generous portion and served with pita bread. -I ordered the Hamachi Crudo and cleaned my plate! Loved this dish, though it was also pricey. -Aussie-Style Iced Coffee (with ice cream), we ordered this to try since I had originally thought Proud Mary Cafe served Australian coffee, but this was all I found on the menu related to Australia...it was good because what can go wrong with some coffee and ice cream? Restrooms were clean. Service was fair. We found street parking nearby around back of the restaurant in the neighborhood.
