Came looking for freshwater shrimp. Staff were super friendly and helpful. They were pleasant, well informed, and packaged my items well. My problem was with the shrimp themselves. I wanted a cherry shrimp and a Jade shrimp staff said they had them, caught them, packed, priced, and handed them off. If you know anything about shrimp, you know they hide in plants and they can be hard to see so when staff told me they had some to sell I didn't expect a microscopic jade shrimp nor did I expect the other one, I suppose you can call red, but it certainly wasn't a cherry shrimp. I stopped in with my dog on 3/25/2026 while in the area for the first time. We were just killing some time, getting some steps in and finding a toy. We walked around the store for a bit which is huge. We liked checking out the fish, stingrays and birds. We ultimately picked out a cow toy and checked out. So much to see and experience, no matter your age! (I took 3 teenagers for a visit and they loved it!) Animals galore of all types of species. Give yourself an hour or more to navigate through the whole store and see what it has to offer- especially the Pirate's Cove Area where you can touch stingrays for free! This can be an incredibly educational as well as fun diversion for everyone. There are some strange and unique members of the animal kingdom that I have never seen prior. While pet products are a bit more expensive than other stores, it is understandable to keep the multitude of animals healthy. Check it out- you won't regret it! read more

They also hosted a cat event several years back but recently I have not seen those beings hosted, unless, I am just missing the events. Anyways, this store has a HUGE selection of items and brands for all types of pets from fish to reptiles. I also love that the staff are knowledgeable and can really be of great help to you !! We recently bought some fish and the person who helped us again was so knowledgeable and the fish overall seemed to be in great shape. We bought around 20 fish of different species and we only lost 3 in the process but the drive is over 1.5 hours so it's not worth it for us to go back. If you're looking to build a fishtank, they also offer a wide array of rocks and substrate, chemicals and tools to build your tank! That Fish Place is more of an experience than a pet store. There's so much to see and do, and it's always packed with people. Whether or not they're there to buy supplies or just browse, they definitely seem to have a good time. For starters, you are greeted with a Great White Shark head at the door (oh excuse me, my son says it's a Megalodon). When you step inside, you immediately experience how huge this place truly is. The the immediate left, there is a desk where you can register and license your dogs. To the right, there is a small animal and reptile area. They have such an amazing array of bunnies, hamsters, Guinea pigs, reptiles, and amphibians. We love checking out the lizards, turtles, and what seems to be the 1671622 variations of scary tarantulas (my son LOVES them and wants to own one someday). I appreciate that they have signs indicating which animals are not available because they are new and/or adjusting. There is a super fun touch tank with rays and some fish. My son reports that the rays feel like "wet gummy bears," which is both hilarious and scarily accurate. The store sells and sells supplies for all sorts of pets, but they really focus on fish and dedicate a ton of square footage to accommodate the multiple aquariums housing them. They have saltwater, freshwater, brackish water, and nearly everything in between. They sell plants, rocks, frogs, snails, shrimp, crabs, feeder fish, specialty fish (koi, for example), etc. Their inventory is extensive and impressive. We have gotten four of our family pets here (two bettas and two cherry shrimp), and we regularly shop here for aquarium decor and necessities. The prices for the supplies tend to be on the mid to higher range, but the prices for the fish and other sea animals are very reasonable. The store animals here seem to be happy, and so far, we haven't had any bad luck with animals dying on us, in fact, they are pretty hearty! My only gripe is that I need to limit my visits here. This is the cleanest animal store I have seen in a very long time. The staff were so friendly and helpful! I have never seen so many different types of fish all in one place. They have a large variety of fresh water and salt water fish. The beta fish wall was spectacular because they were so clean and NOT ONE FISH WAS DEAD!!! I was so happy to see how well they are all taken care of. They have a room for desert animals and a separate room for rabbits, piggies, ferrets and hamster's. All animals were well taken care of and the staff were playing with a lot of them throughout our visit. This is a fun place to visit and would be great to take your kids to for a fun trip. We have had exceptional experiences with Kayla in The Groom Room! Our dog is a rescue from very limiting circumstances and needs extra TLC and a gentle approach. Kayla is great with our pup - his grooming is always top notch and Kayla brings an attention to detail we have not found elsewhere. She is thorough and always recaps how it went and her observations on his health of skin, ears etc. Shopping here is also a nice experience because of the staff. I have been coming to That Fish Place for many years and consider it THE destination for all things pet oriented. On the aquatics side, their selection of aquarium equipment and livestock is second to none. They also have a very knowledgeable staff on both the floor and the fish room ready to help at a moments notice. On thing I definitely appreciate is that they are very active with their coupon mailers and weekly sales events. Keeping your customers in the loop with big sales and coupons gives people like me who live an hour away more incentive to make the drive. That Pet Place is also very active on social media, constantly hosting free events such as pet specific expo days and swap meets. Last year I attended their That Cat Day! which was a mini cat expo inside the store. They had several cat specific brands in attendance handing out free samples and swag for the kitties. They sold me a Java fern with fungal disease. I thought the green galls on the tip were normal because I am new to this hobby but it ended up spreading and I did research to learn about Java fungal disease. Now I can't keep any Java ferns unless I tear down my entire tank and start over as this fungus can lay dormant in your tank for years and infect new Java ferns! So disappointed. read more

I had read about this place on a website of things to do in Lancaster, and we happened to have lunch at Isaac's next door so we stopped in to kill some time before our tour at Turkey Hill. I hear there used to be access to a touch pool; however due to COVID, it's not accessible at this time. This place is definitely giant and clearly specializes in fish. We walked through looking at the fish but TBH, how many fish can you look at in tanks before you get bored? They have cats to adopt that we looked at through the glass too. They seemed to have everything a Petco or Petsmart would have, just maybe more options to choose from, but I didn't really see anything unique I could not find at a chain pet store. I visited this store the other day I purchased several things including 5 cory catfish within a day all of the catfish died. I've had fish for many years and know how to acclimate fish. The fact that all five died is a problem and that's not normal. I contacted them twice and 48 hours later I haven't had a response. I will never shop there again. read more

So I was passing through a LPS and came across a 12g nano/stand on clearance and grabbed it. Made a trip to ThatPetPlace to buy all my set up because there really is no where else for a ONE STOP shop for all the best quality products. I knew I wanted to just bypass the whole filter system of the nano and went straight for a NEW Fluval canister and built my interior from there. I was able to pick up everything I needed. Sand, filter, media, extra foams, test kits, reef starter, submerse-heater, salt, and a trip into the fish room to grab a custom fabricated frag rock as well a couple extra loose rock to fill in. ThatPetPlace is the only place I could have gone to and be able to shop, compare and build my new system. I already have a pair of 21 yr old clownfish waiting to move in. I will make a 2nd trip to pick up all my corals and really get my new mini nano reef going. The staff was so helpful and had fun sharing tank experiences and helping to make decisions. Pretty large selection for the area and the prices are reasonable. You can also join their rewards program for monthly coupons and discounts. This place is HUGE. I dont live around here. But i had 3 red-ear sliders that I needed to surrender because I couldnt take care of them anymore after 10+ years. It is illegal to set them "free" in NY. That wasn't an option for me anyway. A lot of sanctuaries have turned me down for months and suggested that I keep them and buy a ton of stuff. I have been doing that for over 10 yrs and they have just become overwhelming and expensive. I've been in contact with "That Pet Place" and was told there was no room for them but to keep trying back because people do buy RES turtles for their ponds and they go pretty fast this time of year. I kept in touch for a month. Finally, i was told there was room. I drove the next day. It was a 3 hour trip, but it was well worth it. The staff was friendly and helpful. I brought my turtles to the reptile section and had them inspected. As soon as they passed the health inspection, they placed them on the rocks in a pond. I was so happy for them. It took a few seconds, but my turtles dove right into the water. I watched them for a while. They looked really happy to be swimming. I know they will be happy there, and hope they'll be placed in good homes. After that, we walked around this huge store for a while. They had everything I've ever needed. You definitely dont see this in a pet store in NY. This is the place you go to to get supplies for your exotic pets. There's this one section where you can pet sting rays, and they also had a fish section. It was awesome. It was almost like a zoo. I can only wish that there was a place like this in NY. Wound up bringing parasitic worms home with guppies I purchased. My 65 gallon guppy tank used to be the envy of the neighborhood. A few females to mix up the breeding stock in my tank that were purchased here became the downfall of the entire tank. I lost a bunch of fish. Digging out dead and dying fish messed up a lot of my live plants. The whole tank went to crap. I will never buy livestock from this place again. This store really used to care and it was a nice stop, but it has gone down the tubes in the last 4-5 years. This would be the second round of sick fish I got here, and I won't go back for strike three. Looks like I'll be doing business with Pet Smart from now on. The small animal room is very rude and unhelpful, I rescued a feeder rat from a friend and since that fish place is very close I'd figured I would call to see when they have rats. So I called on Wednesday and they said they would have rats ready for sale on the following Friday or Saturday I call again the next week on Wednesday and they say they'll check and they leave me on hold for 10 mins. I ended up hanging up but I go in on Saturday and see that the cages for rats are empty, me and my sister go up to the employees working and ask for there rat breeders information, the guy working was named Jesse he replied with rude and sarcastic "no" "it's against company policy" then proceeded to cock a sly smile they were very rude and blunt. While the store is big and has tons of stuff for small animals etc.. the small animal room is a no go. With as big of a company as they are, there is no reason for them to have this low of social standards. Do better with the costumer service training. read more

The worst customer service we've ever experienced. We were sold a fish tank that had a damaged seal. When we put water in it it started leaking. Husband contacted the store and they pulled his chain for two weeks. How can you sell a customer a brand new tank that is defective and do nothing about it. Now they just will not answer his emails or calls. He has spent lots of money at this store and it waa his favorite store. Well, needless to say, we are no longer fans. What a way to treat your customers. All they had to do was make the situation right and we would've continued to be loyal customers. We will not recommend this store anymore to friends. Been here many many times over the years. I am basically just a tropical fish guy, but my kids inevitably have to look at the spiders, baboons, snakes, frogs, bats, ferrets etc. The fish quality and selection have really diminished over the years. The fish tanks are barely even labeled now, at least the cichlids. Plus the prices of the fish are robbery for the size. I won't buy fish here any longer, not based on quality and price. However, the dry goods are priced well and are competitive in my opinion. The staff is great - courteous and helpful. For hardware and supplies, go here. So I went into TFP and the person working in the aquarium section was SOOO helpful! He told me what I should be using to clean and filter the tank, and answered all of my questions. I recently purchased shells for my Hermit crabs from here. I selected what this store calls NATURAL shells, However, when I recieved them, they are NOT at all natural and had been "glazed" so thick that it was dripped over the opening of the shell. Anyplace that sells shells for hermit crabs knows that this is unhealthy and unacceptable for crabs to use. I called to request a refund and was told that I would have to pay for shipping to return the items and only then be refunded the amount paid for the shells. Needless to say, the cost for shipping is double the amount for the shells. I am very disgusted at this point and not only will I be throwing these items in the trash, as I cannot use them, but I will in future use a different company for future purchases. Such a shame. This place used to be Mecca when it came to fish livestock. Still a decent pet store. We have bought our fish, pond, and dog supplies here for the last 10 years. Sad to say that this will be my last trip out this way until the store stops treating themselves as a glorified PetSmart when it comes to their fish livestock. You used to be able to walk into this place and be blown away with their livestock choices. However, these days, it's the same old freshwater fish, empty tanks, etc. There are much better options for livestock in central to eastern PA these days. Again, it's a shame. These folks have one of the best facilities, but are content selling the same fish over and over again. I get it. These fish obviously sell. I know it's probably more of a business decision than anything else. But honestly, they are wasting their facility. If it was about money, there are way more economical ways to run their fish room if they'd rather have the same recycled fish, from the same fish farms over and over again. As someone who has been part of the retail pet industry for years, and access to the same fish ordering lists as every other store, it's baffling to me that this is how they want to continue. Not exaggerating, but I personally know 75-100 people that would love to see this place restored to its former glory. If TFP has any interest at in making TFP great again, I invite them to get a hold of me. They have the facility, the staff, the size to resurrect what once was. Until then, I will stop driving the hour from my house to pick up dog food, dog toys, fish supplies, and fish livestock I truly hope no store representatives respond to this with a terrible "pandemic" excuse. I was on vacation in philly, and my last stop was turkey hill experience ten minutes up the block. I remember that fish place catalogs when I first started with aquariums 20 plus years ago, and visiting two decades ago. I was excited knowing I would visit again on the last day of my vacation. I wanted to restock my 90 planted tank and had saved some money just for the purpose. Driving by, the building looks enormous. There are huge signs and from the outside everything seems a-ok. I am visiting only for aquarium live stock and aquarium dry goods. There is a huge dog/reptile area which I did not even visit. There is a huge touch tank which can keep your kids busy while the parents shop. The warehouse is huge. I would think because of the size of the warehouse, they can buy in bulk and offer huge savings. I went through all the aisles, and the pricing was actually higher with some goods than the local fish stores (non chain in NJ). A good example of this is ecocomplete. You can buy this cheaply online, but even my local pet store sells it for 24.95 and it was priced 29.95 here. DRY GOODS:There is a huge assortment of rocks and ornaments, which I do have to admit is probably bigger than most local stores can handle. And chain stores definitely would not handle those specialty rocks. There is also a huge selection of pond products, filter mats, pumps, filters. I can't comment on how competitive those prices are, but if you are an impulse buyer. They have it. LIVESTOCK: you enter through these swing doors into a dark back warehouse. There is no big signs for this. There is one set is swing doors to the left which read employees only. Then further right is another set of swing doors which read FISH ROOM. if you didn't know they sold livestock, you can almost assume they didn't cuz its in a completely separate part of the warehouse. The fish room is super dark, which in my opinion makes it seem dirty right away. Set of tanks upon entering is set up to sell glow fish (is this why it is dark?) I needed an entire school of neon fish for my planted tank. Guess how much. 2.99. Even the chain stores sells them for under 3 and sometimes for much less, my local stores charge less and buy more, save more The tanks are also all on an central filter system. I guess this is how it was done 20 years ago, but now it's probably better to have air filters in individual tanks. This means all the tanks share the same water. There is black hair algae in almost all the tanks, all of the tanks in the first row was empty and even more in th second row. Very small freshwater selection, and the tanks did not look well kept. If I employed this amount of staff, I would have them upkeep these tanks. And I do understand having an algae tank is good in some circumstances, but these tanks are on a central filter system. I didn't find any nano tanks fish, saw no exotic fishes, out of ordinary fishes and I didn't even spot odd corydorys! They had a ton of betta fish, and when I say a ton, I mean a lot and a few of them looked like they have been stranded for a while in their small prisons. PLANTS: I was then hopeful that their plant room would offer something for me. Most of the plants were melting. Some had string algae on them and none of them had any decent amount of lighting on top of them to keep them from melting. This visit changed what I remembered from two decades ago. If your tanks look healthy, if you have fish people can't find, if you have bright lights over your planted tanks and if you offer discounts for two or more purchases, things may return to the glory days. For now, I am glad I didn't make the three hr drive from NYC just for this. If you did come here just for tfp, visit turkey hill experience up the block. I walked out of that fish place empty handed, and I took my money home. I was so upset I went to a chain pet store when I got home and they had a buy four get two fish free deal. -- and I always love to support mom and pop businesses first. I hope this review is a wake up call. Update oct 2017 I didn't see the response previously from the establishment. I am glad they are looking into some areas that needed some basic improvement. Like the entrance to the fish room. I really love mom and pop places and I hope to visit again one day. If it upgrade the lighting in the plant area. They will live longer, less restock and they actually will take nutrients out of the water column. It's a win win and leds are cheap to run. Good luck I also updated my stars. read more

So this is unfortunate! I really wanted to love this place. We purchased a glass hood kit (and MANY fish and plants) for my 150 gallon African Cichlid tank and when we arrived home one of the stick on handles was missing from the box and one was damaged. We went back to the store two days later and spoke to "management"... they told us np, go back and see an associate by tanks (I forget his name, looks like teen wolf, no offense to his epic beard). He finds two replacement handles in his box of extras. He calls up front and talks to his "manager" while I discussed the $300 filter I purchased this day with another associate (the older hippy looking guy, I believe his name is Mike... for the record Mike is AWESOME!). So teen wolf hangs up and tells us he has to charge us $2 and change for each of the TWO handles, even though I have a broken one IN MY HAND!! I go up front with my replacement handles and my $300 filter to see this "MANAGER" about this OBVIOUS misunderstanding. The manager told me unless I was willing to drive home (an hour away) and bring back the entire hood kit and REPLACE it, that they couldn't do anything for me... "you know, because some people, not you, but some people try to do THINGS"... WHAT F'ING THINGS??? We will try to avoid The Fish Place with this type of customer service, all over less than $5! We are very tempted to return our filter and purchase the same one for $10 less over at Amazon! read more
