I'm surprised I have not reviewed Thanh Binh. I've eaten at this restaurant so so long ago, since the older days when the parents of the current owner used to own the restaurant in Fullerton. They were known for their vermicelli with grilled shrimp, pork, and egg roll. And the family recipe continues on to these days. Recently stopped by again for dinner. Had the vermicelli with grilled chicken, beef, and shrimp. It was good and plentiful but I didn't really care for the marinade of the chicken. The grilled beef was excellent though. 4/5 Also had an order of the combo porridge. That also came with shrimp, chicken, and sliced beef. Thanh Binh has been an old-school staple Vietnamese restaurant in OC for as long as I can remember. They serve pho and other classic Vietnamese dishes without the hassle of driving all the way down to Bolsa. It's located in the newly renovated Lake Forest Gateway shopping center ~ right off the 5 freeway/between Lake Forest Drive and Rockfield Blvd. The restaurant is found on the far right of the strip-mall, as you enter the plaza. It's a small and quaint location, with indoor & outdoor seating. The walls are decorated with relic culture pieces of art from Vietnam. The staff is friendly, as they greet you instantly upon arrival. We are usually seated right away and service is quick. On this particular occasion, I was having a lunch date with the hubs and was craving the traditional Vietnamese broken rice dish. I ordered the steam rice with pork, egg rolls & tofu. The hubs ordered the sames (minus the tofu), but in the vermicelli rice noodle bowl version. The pork was marinated and grilled perfectly. It's moist and flavorful. Their egg roll reminds me of how my mom makes them, which is always comforting. I additionally love the crispy tofu, because it's also a healthy & filling option. It's ALOT of food, to which I had to take home some. A total good value for the $17 price tag. Needless to say, my hubs enjoyed his dish, because he was able to finish the whole bowl. Lol I've also ordered their oxtail pho (pho duoi bo) in the past and it's pretty solid ~ uber flavorful and you can taste the slow-cooking of the oxtail because the meat literally falls off the bone. Their mi wonton (wonton with egg noodle soup), bun rieu (vermicelli noodle soup with shrimp, crab paste, & tomatoes) and bun bo hue (spicy noodle soup with beef) are our family favorites too. The staff are very friendly and helpful, and the food is always hot and tasty. You'll know this place is authentic not only from the trusting staff, but the music being played has the traditional Vietnamese acoustical instruments for that reminder after each bite you take. Located in a shopping center near church, Hubby and I stopped by for lunch on Sunday. An older gentleman greeted us immediately and placed us at a nearby table. The food was okay but couldve been better. I wouldnt say its exactly an authentic restaurant as theres too many options in the menu which causes pieces of the food to be cut down a lot like the bun rieu and bun bo hue. This is a family favorite. Thanh Binh has the best pho ox tail with fall off the bone meat. It's large is ginormous-- I share this with my 10 year old son. My husband loves to pho tai rare steak and older kiddo loves the rice dishes. Egg rolls are delicious and service is great. Feels like family when you eat here. I have been coming here for a few years now. Today I tried the combo vegetables and tofu pho. It was loaded with broccoli, bok choy, carrots, onions and strips of fried tofu. The broth was tasty and the small pho is very generous. I wasn't crazy about the tofu but it was ok. I probably will stick with another protein next time. The service is fantastic. This is a pretty popular Vietnamese restaurant. I've noticed a lot of Filipinos in particular love it. They're located in the shopping plaza with Starbucks, Uoko, DeLucia's, IHOP, etc. The restaurant isn't big and seats a small number of patrons. They do have some set up outside for overflow, but when it's cold, it's not a good place to dine. There are no outdoor heaters from what I can remember. I would either just go somewhere else or sit in the car until your table is ready. Staff here are friendly and check up on you frequently. We never have to ask for refills or flag anyone down. What we order: -Pho mostly the beef or oxtail. The broth is alright, not as tasty as I've had. -Grilled pork chops. The kids love this one here. -fried egg rolls. Always a hit -#20 the wonton egg noodles soup with seafood and pork. I like this one because of the egg noodles and wonton. It can be slightly bland at times but nothing either a little fish sauce or chili oil can't fix. -Fried garlic calamari. I like this here. It's not your average calamari or what you're used to. -Fried tofu -Vermicelli noodles with pork -Rice with shaken beef. My husband loves shaken beef but prefers this one at another restaurant. -House spicy tofu Overall Thanh Binh is a 3 out of 5 for us. They're ok and yes I would go back if someone wanted to eat here, but I would probably try to divert them to meet me at another Vietnamese restaurant. There was a decent serving of meat (though a couple of pieces were on the chewy side), but the broth was not as flavorful as I expected. This place is...odd. Came here for a quick lunch today. The pho was so-so. The lady, who I assume is an owner or some level of manager, sits at this giant 10 person table, facing the front, and proceeds to watch these loud videos on her phone the entire time I was there. It's not a large place so she was like 1 table away. The younger guys stand around her and stare at me the entire time I was eating. I swear it felt like I was in a movie and they were guarding a mob boss or something. Between the awkwardness and the obnoxiously loud videos it was just...uncomfortable. After dining at your restaurant recently with my one-year-old son, I was spoken to very rudely by one of your employees, who told me to "sit outside next time." The comment was clearly in reference to my son, who, as a toddler, made a small mess while eating -- something completely normal for a child his age. What made this situation worse was that when I called to express my concern, instead of showing understanding or empathy, the response I received was dismissive. I was told that the issue had something to do with the tip I left -- which makes no sense, as tipping is a voluntary gesture based on service quality, not an obligation. Regardless, that should never be used to excuse disrespectful treatment toward a customer. I found the entire interaction both unprofessional and hurtful. As a parent, I understand the importance of being considerate when dining out with children, but I also believe families deserve to be treated with respect and understanding. This experience left me feeling unwelcome and unfairly judged, which is unfortunate given that I had previously enjoyed visiting your restaurant. I hope you will take this feedback seriously and address it appropriately with your staff. We showed up at 740p, it was already in the To-go area. Suspect. We order the Bun Rieu (highly recommend), Thai spicy rice noodle soup with beef, and fried garlic shrimp. The Bun Rieu, wow... 0 flavor, 3 total shrimps in the soup. I was excited because I love noodles and there were a ton of noodles for the order. First bite... okay... add a packet of hot sauce. A little better. Add another. It's still completely flavorless. The lack of shrimp for 16 dollars is sad. I wouldn't have minded if it actually had flavor. My wife is a big Pho fan and she tried it and told me. Okay that is not good. The Thai spicy rice noodle soup... with beef. 4 pieces of beef with the order of a small. Not sure how they charge 16 dollars for that. It was not spicy and average to below average. Flavors were not compelling if barely existent. It was edible compared to the Bun Rieu. Okay the good part. The garlic shrimp. For 22 bucks you get about 16 shrimp and the light crispy batter is perfect. Flavor is exceptional. I wish this was all we ordered and it would be a 5/5. The lemon oil sauce include was amazing as well. The place is super packed inside with diners which makes me think they just don't care about the to go orders. Would not recommend. read more
