The Thali franchise is fast sweeping Bristol, but of all its branches this one in the heart of Montpelier is my favourite. However, my husband usually grumbles about the lack of meat on the menu so I am more often found here with friends, quaffing wine and greedily wiping clean my tiffin. From the outside the cafe is inviting with a bright pink decor sparkling from across the street. And although is is fairly small inside, it is beautifully decorated and welcoming. After testing out its incredible dishes on the ravenous crowds at the Glastonbury and Big Chill festivals, the Thali opened a permanent base in the city 10 years ago and is now something of an institution. At the Montpelier branch, you can choose from the Northern Thali or the Dairy-free option- a generous helping protein, pulses, rice, salad and a vegetable dish served on a stainless steel platter. The recipes are chosen to nourish as well as tickle the palate so this balance of foods is always the same, although the exact recipes will vary. There is also a tasty selection of Mumbai-style snacks to graze on if you fear the Thali itsef will not sate and a mouthwatering selection of kulfis to finish. Most Sundays there is live music from local performers and the Thali staff place a strong emphasis on aiming to recyclde 100 per cent of their waste, sourcing food locally and using seasonal produce. There is also a great selection of alcohol, juices and lovely chai to accompany your meal. I have never done takeaway here but the Thali allows you to buy your own eco-friendly Tiffin to bring in for a refill whenever you want.

The Thali café is also quietly revolutionising the take away market with its Tiffin Club.

It, like a few other places on this road, has a good reputation, and their food certainly lives up to it. Giving the name 'cafe' immediately puts the guests at ease, but the interior is nice enough to warrant it being called a restaurant. The food is uniquely wide ranging, with a number of options you don't usually see on an Indian menu - Haandi curries, for example. This is the option that I went for, and the meat of the chicken was good quality. I'm not too keen on spicy curries, but there was just the right amount of spice, so it was an enjoyable meal. It's excellent value for money; a main will cost around £6, with rice setting you back about £2.50. Worth a try - a good Indian in a nice neighbourhood.

Being a bit Indian cuisine fan myself I…read morehave tried a fair few different restaurants, and I loved this place so much that I've already been back a couple of times! Firstly - prices are cheap and you get great value for money! And if you don't mind eating a bit earlier, then they have a happy hour between 6pm and 8pm where for only £8 you get curry, rice and naan and can enjoy the great atmosphere of the place. Secondly - the food is actually amazing, and you get good portion sizes - I could only eat half of mine and they were more than happy to pack the rest up for a takeaway. The staff here are so friendly and they literally look after you from the moment you walk in, constantly checking that everything's okay - and the place is so cosy and comfortable, with a buzzing environment! Ahmed's offer all your traditional curry dishes, as well as a few chef specials - and they cater brilliantly for vegetarians, you can pretty much ask for anything that takes your fancy and they'll change it to a vegetarian dish. If you don't want to eat in then they also offer a free delivery service - they tend to take around 45 minutes to deliver too, which isn't bad! Overall I would definitely recommend this place - especially if you fancy a curry in a casual and friendly environment!

The first thing that strikes you on entering is that it can't really be described as a curry house: the term Indian restaurant is far more appropriate. This isn't the sort of place where lagered up lads tolerate ropy food in return for one more pint, but a first rate restaurant where the food takes centre stage. The menu is imaginative and varied without just piling on all the old favourites. You can't just choose your favourite curry, rice and naan and you're away, as all the main courses come with the sundries appropriate to that dish. The emphasis is very much on authentic Indian cuisine, not its spiced up English offspring. It may have garnered something of a reputation for being expensive, but Rajpoot really is a cut above, especially in the presentation stakes. The interior is clean and bright and their excellent service has attracted a large following of loyal regulars. And if the weather's on your side you can relax out front and gaze out across the Downs.

As a converted Georgian town house over looking the Bristol downs, Rajpoot is certainly one of the best located Indian restaurants in the city and as a dining experience it is certainly in a different league to many other eateries around the city. The food here is authentic Indian cuisine and not the bastardized version of it you find in most other places, so if you're looking for a tikka masala, look else where. If you're more serious about your Indian cuisine and want traditional dishes, great service, a wonderful location and that touch of sophistication often missing from similar restaurants, this place is the one for you. The prices are a little steep, but it's very obvious why.
