I'm going to rave on a little more than the previous reviewer as I absolutely loved it. The best Indian food at delightful prices nearly as good as the all-encompassing Thalis (but with meat, meat-eating fans will be happy to hear). Although in a similar way to the thali, they do have metal tiffin tins to take away. Genius. I like that you can taste the individual spices in their food, cumin seeds etc rather than the flavours all being muddied up together like in some 'authentic' restaurants. Ganesha - Indian Near Me - Bristol, BST

Ganesha is doing something quite different and perhaps even daring: it's serving up authentic Indian cuisine unlike most you'll find in other Indian restaurants in Britain. There are quite a few dishes from Goa and Kerala on the west coast of India, including some delicious fish dishes, and some North Indian specialities as well. The staff take the time to explain their menu (with pride) so you can ask any questions before you order. Take-aways are delivered free within a 4 mile radius if you spend £15, or you can get a 10% discount if you collect. Three of us ate there for the first time last Friday night, and the place had a nice, busy buzz to it with plenty of customers and background chatter. We started by sharing a Masala Dosa, a pancake with potato and a couple of chutneys, which is quite large so far too much for one. For main, we shared a few dishes so we could try a variety. We had Aleppy King Prawn, one of the more expensive items on the menu, which was cooked in a delicious coconut, coriander and mango-flavoured sauce; Goan Fish Masala, which is a distinctive-tasting dish cooked in a clay oven; and Murg Makhani (Butter Chicken), which is a creamy, mild dish from Northern India. We also ordered a couple of vegetable side dishes and naan breads, all of which were delicious. It's fantastic to see an Indian restaurant serving up real Indian desserts, too, such as the syrup-soaked Gulab Jamun, and Kulfi (Indian ice cream with exotic flavours such as rose, coconut or mango) - and I was disappointed to find myself far too full to fit any in. I'm something of a stickler when it comes to my Indian restaurants and takeaways so when somebody tells me to try this place or that place, in the back of my mind I'm usually thinking "best Indian restaurant in Bristol? We'll see." Somebody recommended Ganesha to me as a potential takeaway for a Saturday night so I went onto their website and what struck me straight away was what sort of Indian restaurant this is. Basically this is authentic Indian cooking, very much in keeping with what you might expect to find if you actually went to India. There are no chicken Tikka Masala's or Chicken Balti's or any other English bastardized versions of their meals. It is all very traditional and quite daunting if you've never heard of any of them before. Don't let this scare you off because this is a fantastic restaurant serving fantastic food. It is a little more expensive than other Indian restaurants, but you're getting the real experience here and a very good one at that. I had the Murg Thadali on Saturday night and without a hint of exaggeration, it was possibly the nicest Indian meal I'd ever eaten. read more

I have never "eaten in" at Ganesha but I regularly get take away. In my opinion it is the best Indian take away in the area. They serve many classic Indian dishes such as tikka and sagwala but they also do some unusual dishes, my favourite being peshwari ghost chops, beautifully cooked curried lamb chops. They also do masala dosa which is a real treat! If you think of Bedminster, exotic may not be the first word that springs to mind, but Ganesha, which sits opposite Asda, is like a small slice of India located in south Bristol. This is a truly authentic restaurant, which serves up Indian food as you'd find it in its native country. If you're a chicken tikka massala kind of a person, this may not be for you. For this reason, the extensive menu, which offers dishes from all over India, may seem a bit intimidating, but the friendly staff are happy to help explain what's what, and there's a helpful heat guide so you don't accidentally end up with something super spicy (unless that's what you want!). It's not likely to take over the bastardised English version's place in my heart (and stomach), but if you're a curry fan and you want to try something different, this is a great place to go, and you really should try it at least once. read more

I've been to Ganesha three times now and had three unbelievable meals - and that's definitely worth a review! One of the only Indian restaurants I've seen that do a dosa, and do it well. Light pancakes stuffed with tasty goodness and best sambals ever. The curries are complex and fresh tasting and you're always able to really taste the ingredients. Best Butter Chicken I've ever had and the Goan Fish Curry was spicy and delicious. A friend had the Lamb (Gosht?) chops that was filled with meat and minced lamb in the curry as well - great value. The best part of the place is the naans. I'm a little obsessed with a garlic naan but they have a chilli and cheese naan that's interesting and goes well with a less complex dahl. The service is always impeccable and it's the same people working the whole time so it feels very much like a family run restaurant. If you've never been before, be sure to let them know as they will talk you through the menu and a bit of background before you stuff the deliciousness into your face. read more

Fantastic food and excellent service. All of our meals were fantastic and were so full of flavour. It's not like your average 'british' curry restaurant so we were really happy that the very friendly waiter talked us through the menu and made some suggestions. He was so passionate about the food and you could see why when the plates arrived at the table. Have been a few times now and always delighted. I'm a tough critic and I'm giving Ganesha 5 stars.I've been to many Indian restaurants and this one tops them all. The food was absolutely spectacular. They also catered to my vegan diet by tweaking ingredients to accommodate me. The appetizers were phenomenal, as were the main meals, as were the naans. We never got to eat there, so I have no comment about the food. We arrived there about 7:30 on a Friday night. The place was busy, but not packed. We were told that there would be a wait for a table, about 40 minutes. We (my daughter and I) went for a beer in a local pub, and returned at the appointed time. We were seated immediately, and an attentive waitperson shortly took our orders. She mentioned that the restaurant had just relocated here, and that 'things needed to be worked out, that there would be a delay'. So, allowing her to set our expectations, I asked how long she would think we would have to wait to be fed. '45 minutes to an hour', she said. We waited an hour, and I approached the waitperson, who was now staffing the bar. I asked her how much longer she thought we would have to wait, and she went off into (I presume) the kitchen to find out.. When she returned, she said '5 minutes maximum, your food is now being cooked. There will be no charge for your drinks.' I said, 'If we are not served with our food in your time limit - 5 minutes - we shall simply leave money for what we have had (a couple of beers, poppadoms and chutney), and forgo the pleasure of the meal. My daughter (reluctantly) started the timer on her iPhone, and at 4 minutes and 30 seconds, a waiter rushed over and put two empty plates on our table. When the 5 minutes expired, there was no food, and we paid our estimate of what we owed and left. Remember, we asked the restaurant what we should expect, and we let them set our expectations. It's difficult to be objective, but on that evening, Friday, 5th March 2010, it seemed that no one else was being served any food, either. The only Indian restaurant i've come across in Bristol in which the foods tastes like it does in India. Bloomin' fabulous. The masala dosas are really nice although don't expect them to be quite so light and crispy as the sub continent (or Wembley!)...but still delicious. the lamb nilgiri was great and took me straight back to India. the breads are very good but much smaller than the monster naans hanging from naan trees on your table that you get in Bradfordbut then that's just freakish! all in all, the best indian restaurant in Bristol imho. read more

my boyfriend orderded chicken korma and i ordered chicken tikka masala, when it arrived for some reason his korma was exactly the same as my tikka masala, they were both a browny watery texture as apose to the usual yellow or red thick colour/ texture. It was more expensive than the usual indian takeaway we go to aswell, the only good thing i can say is it arrived quickly. They didnt chuck in any freebies either, like popadoms or the mint yougurt sauce :-( read more
