This place doesn't look like your typical Indian restaurant. It has none of the heaviness in its décor, and instead it's brightly coloured and stylishly modern, almost more like a café-bar than an Indian restaurant. The menu, however, is fairly typical - with all the usual suspects and a few more unusual dishes besides. They mark on the menu which items are mild, medium or hot, which is helpful, and the dishes I've tried have been tasty and, as is always the case with Indian, very filling. What I really like about this place though is the staff: they're always really welcoming and engaging, and their service is fast and efficient. Food-wise, however, my loyalty still lies with a couple of other Bristol Indian restaurants: the Sheesh Mahal and Ganesha.

Very close to "The Arches" on Gloucester Rd is a very funky-looking Indian restaurant called Oh! Calcutta. It looks like it belongs in Amsterdam, Berlin, or other trendy European hotspot, with red walls, dim lighting, contemporary furniture and large windows. Oh! Calcutta prices are above average, but are well worth it as a treat, especially the milder dishes such as Makhani, and the house specials from the chalk board. Service is friendly and quick unless it is very busy. Worth checking out.

After a frustrating hour of trying to find an Indian that delivered, we decided to go the two minutes walk to pick up a takeaway from Oh Calcutta!

Ive heard this place was really good so looking forward to trying it out. We went here for a group meal and the there was about 20 of us....so i expected the service to be slow but they were really good. It didnt make a difference that it was a large the food still came out quick. Nothing was wrong. And everyone complementing their meals. I shared a mixed grill tandoori and it was really tasty. The nann bread were crispy which i really like compared to other curry houses nanns! The staff made checking to make sure our meals were ok. Good food & wine!! Will be returning :)

I have been raving about this place for a whole year but struggled to find a good time to go back until last night. We had popadoms with the usual pickles to start. And for main I had the Lamb Asadi, I have been thinking about it since my visit last year and I have to say it was just as good last night. Asadi is a dish with olives and Feta, which you might think isn't your typical Indian dish but served in the Bhuna style sauce is incredible and works so well. We shared a mushroom rice (although we could probably of had a one each) and a Raj special Nan, it was all cooked to perfection. All for around £15 each, which is great value I think. The staff are really friendly and coped really well with our rowdy bunch, they were quick and efficient. The decor is clean and modern with an Indian flavour, I particularly love the mural of the Indian landscape across the back wall. To eat in, take away or delivery everyone should try the Raj Pavilions you won't be disappointed.

The first thing that strikes you on entering is that it can't really be described as a curry house: the term Indian restaurant is far more appropriate. This isn't the sort of place where lagered up lads tolerate ropy food in return for one more pint, but a first rate restaurant where the food takes centre stage. The menu is imaginative and varied without just piling on all the old favourites. You can't just choose your favourite curry, rice and naan and you're away, as all the main courses come with the sundries appropriate to that dish. The emphasis is very much on authentic Indian cuisine, not its spiced up English offspring. It may have garnered something of a reputation for being expensive, but Rajpoot really is a cut above, especially in the presentation stakes. The interior is clean and bright and their excellent service has attracted a large following of loyal regulars. And if the weather's on your side you can relax out front and gaze out across the Downs.

As a converted Georgian town house over looking the Bristol downs, Rajpoot is certainly one of the best located Indian restaurants in the city and as a dining experience it is certainly in a different league to many other eateries around the city. The food here is authentic Indian cuisine and not the bastardized version of it you find in most other places, so if you're looking for a tikka masala, look else where. If you're more serious about your Indian cuisine and want traditional dishes, great service, a wonderful location and that touch of sophistication often missing from similar restaurants, this place is the one for you. The prices are a little steep, but it's very obvious why.

This place was able to seat our party of 6 at 8:30pm with no issues (including 2 small children). The dishes were each toothsome and well-seasoned - callouts included the lamb Jalfrezi and chicken Cheemeen Mappas from Kerala. Get the Pani Puri and have the server apply the first couple mint and tamarind waters to get the order of operations just right. The Cobra and Malabar IPA were both refreshing, chilled beers, and if you come early enough for some masala chai then take advantage. We all left well nourished, tired, and delighted! We visited on a weekday evening and took advantage of an offer which allowed for 5 street food dishes. Each of the dishes on offer sounded fantastic so we decided to choose two and ask our waiter to select three other dishes. Alongside this we also ordered a standard curry dish and some rice (a feast of a meal for two!). The food arrived quickly and was presented perfectly, the waiter explained what each of the dishes were. Every single dish was amazing; complex and deliciously flavoursome. Of particular note was the Gobi Manchurian which is crispy cauliflower coated in a soya garlic sauce, one of our surprise dishes and not something we'd have probably ordered but wow! a phenomenal taste and something we'll be sure to order next time we visit. The decor is provided by vibrant Indian street art and allows the atmosphere to be casual yet still feeling like you're out somewhere special to eat. In conclusion, if you're looking for Indian food in central Bristol, I can wholeheartedly recommend Dhamaka. The mix of street food whilst still doing excellent traditional curry dishes means there is something for everyone, even the ones who don't like sharing!
