I always have a very high expectation from UK in terms on Indian food. After India, the best Indian food I've have had was always in the UK, especially London. This Bristol restaurant unfortunately falls extremely short of good food. Their curries are forgettable and not delicious at all. Feels like another Indian restaurant run by a bunch of Bangladeshi guys. Service however is quite good. The servers are very attentive and for arrived quickly. read more

This Indian restaurant on a quiet side street in town is a good little find. The interior is luxurious, attempting to recreate old colonial splendour, taking inspiration from British architects who worked in India. It opened in 1999, and has an atmosphere and understated splendour that is quite unique compared to most of the restaurants in the city centre. Their menu is fairly long, with a variety of both vegetarian and meat dishes, clearly separated. I had an unadventurous Nilgiri Korma, which is essentially a korma with a twist of rose petals. It was unexpectedly good though, and as per usual with Indian restaurants, I left absolutely full to the brim. They have an excellently stocked bar as well, which is a nice feature in the main dining room. If you're going to see a show, they do a few pre-theatre promotions, and I highly advise this place to begin a pleasant night of culture. read more

We arrived last night pretty much bang on 11pm, starving and worried we were going to be grabbing our dinner from one of Bristol's many kebab vans, we asked the guys at Old India if they were still open. The chef's and waiters here were more than happy to get us a table ready and were happy to serve us. They didn't make us feel unwelcome or like we were stopping them from going home. They even made me my favourite curry that wasn't on the menu. This Old Stock Exchange building is pretty incredible. I am so happy it is being used as an Indian restaurant, the two different styles work strangely well together. It's not until you visit the toilet that you realise the history of this amazing building. I know how weird that sounds, and obviously don't spend too long loitering around the toilet, it's just amazing that this building has remained so untouched. So go and have a really unique eating experience (in the restaurant, not the toilet). The Indian food is generally considered as one of, if not the best in town, and it did not disappoint last night. This will definitely be my Indian restaurant of choice for my next curry away from home. read more

This is a great place to eat. The dinning area is lovely with the tall ceiling and white table cloths give a clean professional feeling. The food is superb; two dishes that I would recommend are the prawn starter (Jinga Til Bhaia) and the Chicken Chooza Makhani :) If you enjoy Indian food and would like to indulge yourself, have a meal in Old India. read more

The curry was really really good. Reasonably priced and the taste is rich with spice and herbs. All the ingredients mix just came out so good. The cheese naan was really good too although I wish the cheese melted a bit more. Mango lassi was sooooo good. Most importantly, the service was really nice too. Would go again! read more

Has the potential for a "4" but didn't quite make it. My wife's dairy-free requirement flummoxed them a little although she was happy with her meal. (some other Indian eateries have has no issues with this at all; probably the ones where the bases aren't pre-made) Ambience is certainly a plus; this is the former Bristol stock exchange and it looks the part. The men's loo are worthy of a visit, tired but the former opulence still very much in evidence! Yes, even the girls go for a look. Service was ok, but nothing special. Menu isn't extensive but perfectly adequate. At first glance it appears quite different but the are examples of familiar dishes under different names. Perhaps slightly more pricey than some others, but not materially so. We didn't have the suggested banquet, £20 per head, but it seemed good value and interesting. It's not the best in Bristol, but all the same worth a try. We'll probably go back sometime. read more

One of the worst Indian restaurants I've been to on many counts. Atmosphere - it felt like in a food hall, very noisy and waiters shouting out dishes before being served. No ambience at all despite the beautiful architectural building in which the restaurant is found. The bar top was full of dirty beer and wine glasses and there was no rush to get them washed. Food-worst curry ever, there was no texture or richness in the curries. The chicken tikka masala was bland and the sauce was thin. The bindi fry was smudged and tasteless as the vegetable was cut too thin. The naan was standard. The pulao rice had a strange charred taste. We were served saag bhaji instead of saag paneer. When the food came there was no presentation, it looked like the food was dumped in the serving dishes. Lassi was not available as the kitchen was too busy! Service-not worth the 10% service charge that they put on the bill. The main dishes arrived 35 minutes after the starters, that too with one wrong dish out of the orders. Waiters seemed quite heavy, no enthusiasm and motivation shown whilst serving customers. They were also in no rush to clear tables or clean the dirty glasses on the bar counter. Overall, cheap for an Indian dinner for 3 but a total waste of an evening. I'm not going back there again! read more

I should have written this review closer to my visit, so that I remembered the individual dishes better, but the impression still lingers of a nice but not outstanding or special meal. The building is rather interesting (a former bank?) and at least the men's room downstairs is quite unusual in its design. Prices were on par for what to expect in Bristol. (There was some confusion around the bill but it was sorted out professionally.) I have a lot of other restaurants to try in Bristol, so may not be back for a while, but eventually I will, it's worth a repeat. read more

I was a little put off by two things - the fact that they describe themselves at avant-garde Indian cuisine (the chicken tikka masala tasted pretty bourgeouis if you ask me). Secondly, their website describes in intricate detail the architecture and design concept before it even begins to mention food or menus. A classic example of style over substance. On arrival at the none-too-spectacular site off of Corn street doesn't leap out at me, but yes the interior is impressive - marble columns and maharajah chic - the colonial theme hits you in the face. Waiters are attentive and refresh glasses after drinks are spilled etc. I was part of a rather large, rather noisy group of colleague and we filled a table - but there's so much space and the ceilings are so high. It all feels quite grand and the menu is full of tasty Eastern promise. Accompanying drinks include the classic Cobra and Tiger beers and the poppadoms are freshly fried and tantalisingly crispy. What sets the dishes apart from ya local curry house are a sprinkle of coriander here, a star anise there - but generally there's the usual madras, biriyanis and kormas on offer. Very tasty food. A nice location in the old bank building with high ceilings this has a nice atmosphere also. The range of great cuisine is there for me. Having eaten in many Indians and having been to Goa to try the best ever food this is not bad at all. Very polite and friendly staff who were more than happy to keep getting me kingfisher beers which I love. Note to self though: Don't drink more than 1 pint before the curry or I will be close to exploding on the way out. read more

I took my girlfriend here for a meal on a Saturday evening, and we booked a table for 7.30pm. I'd read really good reviews about the place, so chose this restaurant over other more convenient ones. We arrived to a warm welcome, and promptly ordered our drinks. We were advised that there was no lager on draught, so bottles were suggested at the same price, which was fine, until all the customers around us seemed to have no problem in ordering a pint of draught. We were quick to order, and the starter, just simply of chutneys and poppodoms, arrived very quickly. They seemed in a hurry to get the chutney tray back from us (i presume they wanted them for other customers....) and we were hurridly delived our mains. The meals themselves were of a great standard, loads of food, and exceptionally tasty - I can't fault them on that. However, by this time, there was a hen party of 20 already in full swing opposite us, with little control or effort being made to their volume, even though there were a lot of other customers trying to enjoy their meals. The meal portions were really big, which is great value, however we were massively rushed to finished. As we were finishing up our mains, we were asked 3 times, by all different waiters, within 5 minutes if we had finished - i wouldn't have minded if we'd been on the table for hours, but we'd only been sat 45minutes! I'd booked the table, and no word of a second booking after us had been mentioned - and if it had of been, i doubt anybody would think 45 minutes for a meal in a restaurant was very reasonable. Needless to say, after being stared at by all waiters, and hassled to leave, we quickly tried to finish our drinks (a bottle as it turns out, was put on the bill more costly that the pint £4.50) and left for another table to be rushed through their meal. We were sat in the restaurant for a total of 50mins. A massive let down to an otherwise great Indian - Service costs nothing. read more
