Going for the more casual Indian restaurant look, the Curry Cafe is located on Chandos Road in…read moreRedland. It, like a few other places on this road, has a good reputation, and their food certainly lives up to it. Giving the name 'cafe' immediately puts the guests at ease, but the interior is nice enough to warrant it being called a restaurant. The food is uniquely wide ranging, with a number of options you don't usually see on an Indian menu - Haandi curries, for example. This is the option that I went for, and the meat of the chicken was good quality. I'm not too keen on spicy curries, but there was just the right amount of spice, so it was an enjoyable meal. It's excellent value for money; a main will cost around £6, with rice setting you back about £2.50. Worth a try - a good Indian in a nice neighbourhood.

Being a bit Indian cuisine fan myself I…read morehave tried a fair few different restaurants, and I loved this place so much that I've already been back a couple of times! Firstly - prices are cheap and you get great value for money! And if you don't mind eating a bit earlier, then they have a happy hour between 6pm and 8pm where for only £8 you get curry, rice and naan and can enjoy the great atmosphere of the place. Secondly - the food is actually amazing, and you get good portion sizes - I could only eat half of mine and they were more than happy to pack the rest up for a takeaway. The staff here are so friendly and they literally look after you from the moment you walk in, constantly checking that everything's okay - and the place is so cosy and comfortable, with a buzzing environment! Ahmed's offer all your traditional curry dishes, as well as a few chef specials - and they cater brilliantly for vegetarians, you can pretty much ask for anything that takes your fancy and they'll change it to a vegetarian dish. If you don't want to eat in then they also offer a free delivery service - they tend to take around 45 minutes to deliver too, which isn't bad! Overall I would definitely recommend this place - especially if you fancy a curry in a casual and friendly environment!

I used to pass this…read morelocation when it was a Frenchy cafe, but to see it transformed into a cool Bollywood-esque Indian restaurant was cool. To see the Observer award and the eco-focus made me want to try it even more. We got the chicken curry thali - possibly the only meat on the menu?! which comes with dall and many side dishes. I also ordered the Mumbai sampler of samosas, pakoras and pickles. It was all very good. The crowd and server/s were relaxed and only 'interrupted' by the tiffin takeaway crowd. If you don't know about that eco-friendly system check out more here. http://bit.ly/gDQrew. That is the coolest thing I've seen for a long time. (In India these are delivered to people all across the cities on bikes with such precision that there have been operations mgmt studies on how they achieve it.) It could be the freshness, or some organic allergy, but the food didn't agree with me 100%, however, I think this is an amazing place. Try it! Parking could be troublesome as the streets are narrow and it's a residential area.

That's not to say that the Montpelier Thali Café hasn't got a charm of its own - it certainly has. Being the first one in this ever-burgeoning chain, a lot of creative energy went into the place. The décor is pretty unusual, uber-kitsch, and colourful, and the setting is as intimate as Bristol dining gets, often feeling like the rest of your family, (if it's a large one), have descended on you for the evening. Great! The food probably needs no introduction... it's English style South Indian food at its best!

The first thing that strikes you on entering is that it can't really be described as a curry house: the term Indian restaurant is far more appropriate. This isn't the sort of place where lagered up lads tolerate ropy food in return for one more pint, but a first rate restaurant where the food takes centre stage. The menu is imaginative and varied without just piling on all the old favourites. You can't just choose your favourite curry, rice and naan and you're away, as all the main courses come with the sundries appropriate to that dish. The emphasis is very much on authentic Indian cuisine, not its spiced up English offspring. It may have garnered something of a reputation for being expensive, but Rajpoot really is a cut above, especially in the presentation stakes. The interior is clean and bright and their excellent service has attracted a large following of loyal regulars. And if the weather's on your side you can relax out front and gaze out across the Downs.

As a converted Georgian town house over looking the Bristol downs, Rajpoot is certainly one of the best located Indian restaurants in the city and as a dining experience it is certainly in a different league to many other eateries around the city. The food here is authentic Indian cuisine and not the bastardized version of it you find in most other places, so if you're looking for a tikka masala, look else where. If you're more serious about your Indian cuisine and want traditional dishes, great service, a wonderful location and that touch of sophistication often missing from similar restaurants, this place is the one for you. The prices are a little steep, but it's very obvious why.

Took 2 and a quarter hours to deliver, with me phoning them every 45 mins. Each time I was told to wait five more minutes. When the food did turn up I was over charged. When I phoned up to complain I was offered a full refund. A week went by, no refund. When I phoned up and asked about the refund they had no idea what I was talking about. It took TWO WEEKS for them to sort it out and I had to constantly pester them. In the end after A LOT of phone calls I was offered a refund in the form of curry. When I phoned to claim my free curry yet again it was a world of hassle. It involved about 4 phones calls and also took 2 and a quarter hours to deliver. To top it off this time time round the food was cold, overcooked and the wrong order. The food was actually delivered by the manger, who denied the fact that it took over 2 hours to deliver. When I offered to show him my phone with all the times of the calls logged he said he didn't want to talk about it and drove off. Overall the phone manner of the staff (and also the behaviour of the manager in person) was dismissive and incredibly rude. It felt like banging my head against a brick wall, and all I wanted was a curry. It really was an absolute shambles, not just once, but twice. There are loads of decent curry houses in the area, save yourself the hassle and go to any one but this.
