We ordered the pad kee mao and pad Thai. The pad kee mao, as you can see by the picture is very bland. I also requested garlic chicken on top and didn't get that, at all. The garlic chicken or the on top part. It was just mixed in. The cabbage leaves take up a lot of filler space and overall it was just not very good nor spicy considering I ordered a 5. The pad Thai was very okay. Definitely had more flavor than the pad kee mao. We ordered this in a 3 level spice and it was spicier than the other. Thinking they probably mixed them up. The tofu in it was also pretty soggy and nearly fell apart. read more

Service was good which is why it isn't a 1 star review. However the food was off. I eat a ton of Thai food, but this is not on par with either most Thai places here in Merced. The green curry tasted way off, the egg plant was not good at all. The tom kha was very subpar, only two shrimp and the favor was fairly bland and again no where near the quality of most the Thai places here in Merced. Now the ambiance, hot, hot as the devils nether regions. Idk what's going on whether this place is too cheap to run their ac or too cheap to run it but it had to be in the low 90's in the dining room so that was a major detractor. Instead of their ac they had fans running. Honestly it was my bday, this place had decent reviews, but I can either think maybe it's the area demographics there that may not know what decent Thai food is so the bar isn't set to even a moderate standard, but there was nothing fresh about this food and I know this because my mother in law came with us and she never had Thai food before so she didn't know what to expect and even then she only liked two dishes. Either way very disappointing experience. I don't recommend, I'd run, run away as fast as you can. The only semi decent thing there was the laab salad and honestly that lacked big time too. I ordered a beef salad with a side of sticky rice. Mom ordered the beef soup(pho). Everything was delicious. The beef salad was amazing the beef is glazed with chilli sauce & it was so good! I noticed the beef soup had plenty of beef & we love the meat balls (served whole not cut in half like other places). This place had really good food. one of the dishes that I ordered was the butternut squash curry which they served me a really big portion and it was really filling. However, I did not like that you had to pay extra for rice. I remember that the lady there was nice. They also had really good papaya salad as well. First time dining in. This restaurant is quite small but I like the dining area; the glassware are old school though. Slow night when we went-only one other table that had already been served their food. Menu is easy to understand but they looked pretty beat up and old. Cucumber Salad: 4/5 quite refreshing! I actually haven't seen this dish at any of Thai restaurants I've been too. It's crunchy, tangy, sweet! Shrimp/chicken wraps: 2/5 the flavors are good but the shape (triangle) was not a good fit. The shape itself is not filled with enough fillings so it's airy thus when they deep fry then it soaks in a lot of oil. If they had rolled theses babies to make them snug and tight it would have been better. Deep Fried Wontons: 1.5/5 I'm not sure what the fillings were but I wasn't a fan it. I think it's chicken and cream cheese?? Def not a good pair I rather prefer crab/cream cheese. Basil Fried rice: 5/5 really loved the favors! We did ask for extra basil which they didn't put in but it's okay still taste fantastic! Pad Thai: 4/5 okay when the server brought the pad Thai I was really iffy about it but the color of it is quite different. It's def not the worst pad Thai I've had but the flavors were different--oMG the crispy tofu in the pad Thai was bomb.com!!!!! We ordered the combo without Pork or beef. Chicken Eggplant: 4/5 quite delicious. The flavors was there but it was bland what I mean is you can definitely tell that they didn't put that much salt in the dish but it paired well with the other dishes which I'm sure had enough salt anyway! Thai Tea and Thai Coffee: 5/5 no complaints there! The server/waitress was extremely sweet! But I would say service was a bit slow even if our order was probably the only one in the kitchen. I can't even imagine when they are busy how long the wait would be. Getting to the restroom You have to walk through the kitchen a bit and it's really tiny. When I arrived my group was the second group there by the time we left, all the tables were full and we still had no food. When I asked, they had forgot or didn't know. Sad. I ordered dinner via GrubHub today. I'm tired from a long day. This is my third work day in Merced. And I'm done with my hotel's lobby bistro. I wanted to eat rice. I haven't eaten rice in a while, and as an Asian, sometimes you get that craving for anything and rice. I honed in on Thai Star. I am not disappointed. I ordered the butternut squash curry with a side of sweet rice. The curry was creamy and sweet, thanks to the coconut milk, with chunks of soft butternut squash and sliced green peppers. I hate green peppers. But in this sweet curry? I ate them happily. I also added shrimp to the curry. This place doesn't cheat you; I had a good number of shrimp included in there. The sweet rice and the sweet curry are an amazing combination. I love the taste and texture of them both combined! The rice was firm and coconut-y! I couldn't stop eating until all the rice was gone. So worth the carbs. On the whole, would absolutely recommend this place. So glad I found it during my last night in town! Also, I have to give kudos for the quick service.
