Second visit: OMGOMGOMGOMG! I just boosted my 3 star review to 5 because tonight's take out meal was insanely good and I'm on a total spice high. It seems Thai Memory has upped the ante a bit... tonight's 2 chili spicy dishes far surpassed the 3 chili spice of the Jungle Curry we had last time. The deep fried spring rolls were amazing, the green curry was flavourful x 100, and the Beef Spicy Noodles were incredible. My only (very slight) criticism is the breading on the Coconut Shrimp and the Thai Memory chicken. I don't know if Panko breading is an authentic Thai coating or not, but the texture really just doesn't work for me. The coconut didn't seem to stick well to the shrimp, I suspect a tempura style coating would have worked better. Still, I think that's probably a personal taste thing, and the flavours were superb, so 5 stars anyway! Sorry Halifax, your Thai is good, but it no longer shows up Aylesford. Thai Memory, I LOVE you!
First visit: There are not many places in the Annapolis Valley west of Wolfville that truly excite my tastebuds, so I was pretty jazzed to hear that an authentic Thai restaurant had opened this close to home. I didn't expect much until I looked at their menu online, but doing so gave me hope that this was the real deal.
Apparently Thai Memory was originally located in Hamilton, Ontario. I don't know what brought the owners east, but I'm pretty stoked that something did. It appears a lot of other people are, too... the restaurant was crazy busy when we stopped in tonight to pick up our takeout order.
This is a nice looking joint. It's small, but unlike many of the other local eateries, it's obvious that decor is important. It would be a suitable spot for a date or an intimate gathering... that in itself is a nice surprise.
And then there's the food. Halifax has a handful of really amazing Thai restaurants. I'll admit that Talay Thai is still my absolute fave. That said, this place makes a sizeable impression for a little Aylesford eatery. We ordered crispy spring rolls, fresh rolls, pad thai, jungle curry, and jasmine rice. The portions weren't huge, but they were certainly fair for the price.
Of everything, the Jungle Curry was the most impressive item. Loaded with veggies, chicken, fresh peppercorns, and complex flavours, every last drop of the spicy broth was amazing. It didn't quite live up to the 3-chili heat rating assigned on the menu, but it had a kick, nonetheless. We polished off the Pad Thai, as well, and it too was tasty, although maybe not the best Pad Thai I've ever had. The crispy spring rolls had fantastic flavour wrapped in a somewhat thicker than normal wrap. The fresh rolls were not as good as the ones I make ( but mine are REALLY good, if I do say so myself) but the peanut dipping sauce livened them up nicely.
Getting in touch with Thai Memory can be tricky. Last night we tried to call and place an order and after several tries without anyone answering the phone we gave up. Tonight we were successful, thankfully. Their website is pretty flaky and needs a serious update... it's not mobile friendly and parts of it just don't work. Still, it's worth the hassle.
Even with those communication woes, Thai Memory is a breath of deliciousness in a part of Nova Scotia that thrives on burgers, pizza, and frozen fries. I truly hope that the restaurant stays as busy as it was tonight because people in this neck of the wood deserve good food, too. My tummy is a happy camper. read more
