We ordered Masaman curry, red curry fried rice, pad see u, mango sticky rice and one thing from kids menu, I have to say we have had better Thai food in NC. Food was just okay but dessert (mango sticky rice) was horrible, the coconut cream was watery and it just didn't taste right. The other thing that was surprising and not acceptable was the service charge, why do we have to pay the number they put it in if we didn't like the food as much, maybe I wanted to pay more or less of the already added number. First time at Thai Kitchen. It's your basic strip mall divey spot with amazing food. The Pad Thai was not the best I have tried, basically was mostly very soggy more like 7 out of 10. The service we received was excellent and we will definitely be back again someday to see if it was just a one time thing. I surprised this Thai restaurant did not have a Thai spice tray, just hot pepper oil. The restaurant staff did make us feel welcome and I recommend this place. I hope to be back again! read more

I always tell people that this restaurant has pretty close to traditional Thai, but this time that wasn't so. I like the dining set up, as they still have a sign on each table to show that it's been cleaned. The staff are friendly. Sister enjoyed a pho bowl. I thought the herbs (cilantro, basil,lemon slice, with bean sprouts) did not look very fresh. She absolutely loved her pho. She's a big eater but couldn't finish it all. I ordered Pad Thai. Sorry to say, it was prepared way too much sweetness. It flowed onto the plate like gravy, that's not what I like nor was it prepared like this the time I had it there before. Not a lot of flavor. I am a Thai chef, so I feel ok with my critique. However, everything was super clean and the food was served hot, which made it better. I don't like to pay for a dinner and unable to eat more than 1/2 of it so I certainly hope that they can improve. Another issue that we need to take into consideration is the face that they aren't Thai. Despite my sister's great experience, mine was not so I hope to see improvements here. read more

Overall, this place gets the job done if you want Thai food, but it's nothing special. An analysis of the entrees we ordered to share: - Peanut curry pad Thai: the peanut and curry flavors weren't very well incorporated. It just tasted like spicy peanut butter sauce. I did appreciate them allowing me to substitute broccoli instead of onions. - Pad cashew: the sauce was unlike any other pad cashew sauce I've had, and not in a good way. It was like a sweet soy sauce and overly salty. - Pineapple fried rice: it was a small portion for fried rice, and run of the mill. - Peanut curry with pork: this sauce tasted a lot better than my peanut curry pad thai sauce. It had the right balance between sweet and savory flavors. This was probably my favorite dish of the night and tasted great on rice. The quality of food definitely depends on what you order here. I wasn't expecting too much for this kind of Thai place, but somehow Thai Kitchen managed to substantially undershoot those expectations. The food was by turns, bland, inedibly spicy, and just kinda salty, but never tasty and only sometimes edible. We ordered a range of dishes at a range of spice levels -- the spicy dishes were inedibly hot, and I say this as somebody who likes hot thai food!; the unspiced dishes were bland. And neither the spicy nor unspicy dishes had much in the way of actual flavor. We threw most of the food away and apologized to everybody in my group for having led them astray. Not real Thai food. The Pad Thai was soggy and lacked the authentic flavors or real Pad Thai. The Thai curry did not have the authentic coconut and other flavors in real Thai food. It also had an abundance of chinese vegetables that one would never find in Thai curry. I like good spice and I asked for medium spice but the spices consisted of pepper flakes that were not Thai either, and were just poured over the dish and almost too hot to eat.The lack of decor in the interior could be overlooked, but was not really inviting. In a strip mall on Airport road. 4 booths and 4 tables set up on the right side of the restaurant. We ordered a peanut curry pad Thai with chicken, steamed tofu and veggies ($2 extra) at 3x hot and a Thai Red Gang curry sauce sans shrimp medium plus spice. Our waiter's mask fell down while he took our order. Their fruit bubbles are made with a powder. The coconuts water is out of a can. My husband reminded the waiter that he wanted his peanut curry Pad Thai 3x hot. The waiter said he had already put it in as normal spice and would give him a side of chili. My husband asked if it was a problem to have the chili oil added in as it was cooked up or not. The other woman behind the counter chimed in and told him to go tell them in the the back, as if that was hard to do. The peanut curry pad Thai is definitely spicy, creamy peanut sauce and super flavorful. The heat index is working for my husband, it's making his nose run. My Thai ocean is okay, the scallops are a bit mushy, the krab is the imitation kind, of course. The krab was mushy and firm in parts, a mixed bag. The lobster tail is the best part of this Thai ocean combo. The veggies and curry are decent. Service was good. Food wasn't bad. Glad to see they didn't charge me for the tiny chili oil. $39.11 for the two dishes. read more

Got a carryout from here and it was pretty good! We ordered a few dishes as a few of us shared our dinner and we all enjoyed our orders! I did not try everything but I can attest the gang curry (close to ghang gai) was very good! Everything else I tasted was tasty too including the pad thai and beef bulogi. They were very nice in there and saw they had other good options for next time including pho. You got a good amount for the $ also. I've driven by there for years, and I'm glad I finally tried it! It's always nice to find a thai restaurant in northern Michigan. My go to up north is in Petoskey, so it was nice to find an option in Traverse City, as I'm there way more often than Petoskey. read more

Missing Thai food so we decided to try this based on recommendation. Plain Strip mall restaurant with little in the way of Thai decor. Wait staff was polite and the menu actually look appealing. When food came out, it was disappointing. Spring rolls were very bland. I ordered Thai curry medium. the dish was literally covered in hot pepper flakes and way too hot. The curry did not have the coconut flavor that I so love about Thai curry, along with too many Chinese veggies. Traditional Thai hot peppers sliced in fish oil was not available. Best place to eat in Traverse City. Definitely a hidden gem. Everything we had was amazing - the tom kha soup, the pineapple fried rice, and even the jasmine rice. The soundtrack (piano versions of popular songs) was really peaceful and beautiful - one of the best restaurant soundtracks I've ever heard. Caveat: Out-of-towner who lives in SoCal. Was in TC for work. Not sure about the breadth and scope of Thai options in Traverse City. Compared to other Thai restaurants I've been to, Thai Kitchen had great service, friendly staff, quick meal prep, which I really appreciated. Unfortunately, the food was the single and most significantly misstep. It wasn't awful, but it was far from authentic. Unless they changed their recipes to match the palate of the locals, the noodle dish I had was way too sweet and not savory at all. Their pho, which is traditionally a Vietnamese item made with flavorful beef broth and a combination of spices, was very light and bland. A companion had to douse the broth in soy sauce to make it 'flavorful', which you would never have to do with a good pho broth. On the plus side, there were lots of seating available. read more

In town again, went here to pick up dinner. Pad Thai was again very tasty, but was overwhelmed with the sauce to rice noodle ratio this time. Too much sauce for me personally. Ordered crab wonton, almost no filling and could not taste a hint of crab. Too bad, the wrapper was nice. Boyfriend got Mongolian Beef. I ordered the peanut curry with veggies and tofu. I added extra veggies. The others in my group ordered peanut curry noodles with veggies and tofu and extra veggies along with yellow curry with veggies and tofu and extra veggies. It was $64 or something for our meals. I didn't even have basic veggies in my dish. It tastes ok and is fresh but their prices are outrageous for the portion sizes. I really don't feel there were extra veggies in any of our food even though we paid for it. The rice containers are also not even full. read more

This used to be my go to place for a good meal. But my wife and I stopped in fo lunch and I was shocked when they brought out a plate of food that was less than half the portion size I had received for lunch on all my previous visits! There was not more than a cup and a half of food on the little square plate they brought it on. When I asked the waitress about the reduction in portion size, she said "The owner is in the Kitchen today". This owner needs to re-think how he/she treats customers and realize cutting portion size to save him/her money is not going to fill seats in his/her dining room. My level of disappointment is extremely high. This is the first and last time I will leave this place hungry! Treat a local customer bad, SHAME ON YOU! Pretty great the few times we've been. We like that the veggie dishes give extra veggies. The price-to-portion ratio is great. I've gotten the Pad Thai (always my initial foray for Thai places) and while I enjoyed it, I prefer sticky noodles and more sprouts, but that's something I can probably customize. I got the basil fried rice another time (made it extra spicy) and it was satisfying. Good amount of basil, quality chicken, etc. I like that they actually bring the heat if you want it. Service has been good each time, orders are accurate and done in a timely manner. My only point to knock off is on the flavor level, I feel like they could make their dishes more robust but this is fairly minor to me. Authenticity could be a little better but regionally it's as good as you're going to find. read more

Lunch visit. Ordered the Hot and Sour soup. But it's good. Green Curry with Chicken. Let's start with it's NOT green curry. It's yellow curry. When I asked the staff member about it I was told it's not green because of the chili's. So if you want fusion food in a Thai style then the food is good. We were really excited for Thai Kitchen to open .. and our first visit was good and we'll definitely be back. The staff was super accommodating and friendly.. and service was fast & efficient! I loved how they brought me 3 options for hotness: a bottle of Sriracha, flaked chili powder and they're housemade chili oil! #faceonfire! The food: While it's better than Thai Cafe on Munson, I felt it was still shy of truly authentic Thai. I realize they're most likely trying to accommodate northern Michigan folks who might have never been to a real Thai restaurant in larger cities.. but the food here was a little bit Chinese-y with added sweetness to everything. The Hot & Sour soup was very cornstarched out, making it a little gelatinous for my taste. I look forward to trying the Tom Yum... which unfortunately is only served in a large "for 2 people" size... Something I wish they'd change right away. Many people, especially solo diners, only want a small portion of Tom Yum with their meal. Drunken Noodles were also in that vague area of "Is this Chinese food? Or is it Thai?" What's up with all the added gloopy sweetness? Still, they satisfied my need for a noodly rich plate of food. They were very generous with the shrimp... I think my lunch portion had at least 8 plump shrimp in it. The restaurant doesn't look very big- but once inside you realize the entire space is almost 3 different rooms.. The 2 smaller rooms would be great for intimate group dinners or business lunches. I loved the comfy chairs, roomy spacing of tables.. though the Beta fish in tiny bowls on the tables will most likely have to go.. I realize fish don't have feelings, but it just seems a little bit cruel. I'd imagine Beta fish need at minimum 1 gallon of water to live healthily. It didn't terribly bother me.. but I'm sure it'll bother many guests.. Why even create such a situation? :-/ *shrug* But $11 for lunch, a big delicious Thai Iced Coffee .. and complimentary soup (for Grand Opening) was a pretty good deal. This place has gone to Pot....I used to love this place, but prices have gone up and the manager is rude. Table for 2....waited 45 minutes(no exaggeration) while people came and left. Then, no surprise when the food came cold. Oh...but, how kind...they did offer me a 5%discount. Thanks for my $2.50 off, I think I will just pass from now on. Sorry Thai Kitchen, you lost my business as well as many of my friends. One friend actually called to let them know their order was wrong. She asked for ABSOLUTELY NO COMPENSATION...she just wanted to let them know how they could improve, and the manager called her a liar-it will only be down hill from here folks. read more

I was very pleasantly surprised to find Thai food this good, this far north- it's not only better than anything I've had North of Oakland county, it's better than 90% of the Thai restaurants in the tri-County area. Our party of four was very impressed with all the dishes we had. Even the non-Thai dishes are far above average- I had a bowl of Phó that was excellent, and far better than that served at the "Vietnamese" restaurant in town. Strongly recommended. read more

If you are used to proper Thai food, don't expect that here. When I asked about an equivalent to Ka Prow they advised me to get the basil fried rice. It was not remotely the same. The pot stickers were deep fried, which is not what I'm used to, and I would not have ordered them if I had realized that was how they were served. Service was decent though, so I didn't want to give them just 1 star. If you want really good Thai food look elsewhere. read more
