Thai Foon is this wonderful modern Thai restaurant located along Gil Fernando Avenue in San Roque, Marikina City. The dining area is cozy and casual, and the waitstaff are very attentive and friendly.
Tom Yum Goong (or Hot and Sour Soup with Prawns) - I have had tom yum goong at other popular chain restaurants before, and I can say that Thai Foon's tom yum goong is the most well-balanced as far as flavor is concerned. The prawns were slightly overcooked, but the joy of partaking in a good soup as a prelude to a meal is in the excitement and anticipation that it brings to the palate, and in the company of friends you share it with.
Tom Kha Gai - Hot and spicy soup with chicken, coconut milk, and galangal. Warm, spicy, creamy, and filling. This is the Asian version of that classic chicken soup that Westerners enjoy during chilly weather.
Spicy Minced Pork with Lettuce - This is my favorite dish of the entire spread. Equal parts sweetness and fiery heat, the assertive flavors of the meat and sauce are cut down by the freshness of the greens.
Crispy Catfish with Green Mango Salad - This dish is a play on textures. The catfish was a delicious yet light treat, cooked to crispy perfection and well-seasoned. The green mango salad wasn't quite what I expected--I am used to fresh and crisp slivers of that mildly sour fruit--but the pickled vegetable texture is a good foil to the deep-fried fish.
Pineapple Fried Rice - Our fried rice had so much pineapple and sausage in it that it is a complete meal on its own.
Green Curry Pork - This is my second favorite dish of the day. Warm and spicy with a subdued level of heat, I highly recommend having this dish with the pineapple fried rice. That was an awesome combination!
We also had Deep Fried Chicken Wings with Sweet Chili Sauce, Chicken Satay, Fresh Spring Rolls, and Pad Thai.
