Imagine my bliss when I discovered the unassuming restaurant when it opened in Kapitolyo! Took me a couple of drive-bys before I finally decided to give it a try, because every time I pass by, there would be no one there. I finally gave it a try and ordered a selection of items with different flavors namely the catfish salad, the Thai chicken basil, and the sweet spicy tilapia. I know it's a lot, but I was so excited that I couldn't decide what to get. So I just got them all. It certainly wasn't a wrong move. Despite having more than half of each order wrapped to-go, I thoroughly enjoyed each dish because it tasted as good as the ones I had in Bangkok. I even tried their dessert with the red sago (or pearls for some) with coconut cream, which I didn't have during our trip, but found yummy nonetheless. Happy Elephant definitely made me, well, a happy elephant.

I know the nearest flavour of that Tesco Lotus was in My Thai. Not that I'm telling that their pad thai is greasy, but I must say that their pad thai is deliciously oily. It was yummy! The shrimp pomelo salad sa a bit sad for me because the shrimp is not fresh anymore and the pomelo's a bit dry. But the tago haew was simply amazing. We started with the pomelo salad--bright, zesty, perfectly balanced with just the right kick--and then dove into the grilled pork skewers, which were smoky, tender, and gone in seconds. The star for me was the steamed sea bass with chili-lime sauce; the fish was so fresh it practically melted, and that sauce had me spooning it over everything. Even the pad see ew was a step above what I've had elsewhere--chewy noodles, great wok hei, not too sweet. Portions felt generous for the quality, and nothing was overly oily or heavy. Service was flawless. Our server remembered who ordered what without writing anything down and kept the water and tea flowing without us ever asking. They even brought out a little complimentary mango sticky rice at the end because it was one of our birthdays--such a thoughtful touch. Hands down one of the best Thai meals I've had in Manila. Their padkaprow was too sweet for my taste. Definitely different taste from the original Thai version. But it was tasty nonetheless. The server was very helpful and suggested that when we come back I should instruct the kitchen to go easy on the sweet factor. Love how accommodating and flexible they are. I don't know of any restaurant that would be as kind and accommodating.

Muang Thai serves up authentic (or at least, as authentic as you're going to get at this very reasonable price point) thai cuisine, and serves it good. Favorites like chicken in pandan leaves and fried catfish are given a good deal of culinary sophistication, more like what you'd find in a much more expensive place. And as for the place itself, it gives off a very homey, almost rural vibe with light wooden accents and the close proximity. I was thrown at first, but the ambience has come to grow on me like hand-me-downs to an emerging hipster. All-in-all a good place to get a taste of some pretty good Thai.

The spring rolls were a surprise --- they were rather quite good, with the meat flavor being first and foremost. The chicken satay was not bad, but not that good either. One of these days, I might just come back for some more of that pad thai.
