Stopped in on a road trip because we were hungry for Thai. The hole in the wall facade didn't discourage us, as we've encountered some of the best Thai experience in places that look unlikely from the outside. This one lived up to its appearance. To be fair, the Thai basil chicken was quite good. But the oil in the fryer clearly needed to be changed. The spring rolls had an old oil taste to them. Worst of all was the papaya salad. It was inedible, and gave us both the sense that we shouldn't swallow the first bite. We've had this dish hundreds of times in different places, some better than others, but this was plain awful. We told the waitress, and her response was "Yeah, I don't like that here either." But no offer to replace it with something else or remove it from the bill. read more

I'm from Redding and I love Thai food. I eat it all the time, wherever I am. I haven't lived there since I was a kid, and I usually find that the places I thought were great, were really just great for Redding. Growing up, living in cities and and travelling raises yer standards a bit, I guess. But the Thai Cafe remains some of the best Thai food I'd ever had. Anywhere. Bar-None. Seriously. Doubt me if you want or call it home-town loyalty, but the ONLY place I'm stoked to go to when I'm in the RDG is the Thai Cafe. And you should be too! I have heard nothing but good things about the Thai Cafe, so I have been wanting to visit it for some time now. I finally had my chance. I ordered Pad Kra Pao (Thai Basil), fixed up with a mild spice. When the meal came to my table it looked kinda small. I was super hungry so I was a little disapointed in the size. I added white rice to my place and mixed it all up. After my first bite, I could not put my fork down. I was experiencing and food orgasm in my mouth ! lol This is by far the best Thai food in Redding. By the time I was done eating, I was stuffed. That little plate was more than met the eye. I've had lunch here once, pretty small for a big girl appetite. Dinner was fullfilling though. I haven't had anything bad on the menu. The curry dishes are great. Not as "spicy" as they scare you to believe, so don't hesitate to try something "hotter" than usual. Romantic atomosphere, great for dates. Big fan. One of my favorite places to eat in town. I enjoy Thai food quite a bit, and this is my standby here in Redding. I can't say it's the BEST in Redding, as there's one place I haven't tried, but I do love the Thai Cafe! It's a tiny little place, and I've been there many times during lunch when it's quite busy. Driving up I almost didn't go in, but now I am glad I did! I was greeted by a super friendly waitress who promptly took my order. I ordered the eggplant with tofu. It came with what looked like a pathetic salad, but while it was small, it was fresh and I loved the dressing! My eggplant dish was excellent. Service is attentive, they greet us when we arrive, and we don't wait long for the food...and it's great! Tonight for dinner, we had two Evil Prince entrees and the Yum Woon-Sen warm salad. This Thai cafe is the best!! We usually get it to go and bring home...One order of the chicken is enough for my B/F and I to share...(they overload it!!). We are total regulars of this place!! We tried another Thai place here in town and it didn't even come close to compare (we will not go back to that one!!) We tried to order one dish to share but stopped on the way home somewhere else for more food. (spoiled from the Thai cafe I guess!!) I LOVE the Thai Cafe!! We were seated in the side room all by ourselves so it seemed as if we were over looked while everyone else was in the main room. A lot of to go orders and it appeared that their was only 1 waiter. Was not at all impressed with their food. Tried the drunken noodles and they were mushy and unflavorable. Also got the pad Thai and we weren't impressed at all. Best part of dinner was a younger man whom came to bring us our food and made my husband some spicy sauce they he enjoyed. Definitely will not be back. read more

My cars nav system directed us here while passing thru town. While waiting for our order I downloaded this app for my iPhone. If I had it earlier I would have gone elsewhere. The place was fine. Staff typically friendly. Small town dive decor is cute. But the food is just okay. Good but not excellent. Looks like it's a popular local place. It was of course better than fast food, but not like I have had in other cities like charleston, San Diego, las Vegas or home in Palm Springs. Good food. Not outstanding. Okay, I gotta admit when I'm traveling I have a thing for trying to find a decent Thai restaurant and I have been horribly disappointed in the offerings out there. However, I was heading back from a trip and was staying in town so used Yelp to find this one close by the hotel. Absolutely well worth it. I did the take out routine since I was by myself and even though it took me another 15 minutes to get back to my room, the food was hot and tasty. Looks a little sketchy from the the outside(which is typical with Thai restaurants) , but parking lot was full and it was busy inside. AND the food is good! One of the few rare gems in Redding. Evil prince curry is pretty awesome, as are drunken noodles. Everything I've had has been really good, with the exception of some of the vegetarian options (mostly just noodles). Also really fast and cheap. A great little gem near downtown Redding and my favorite place for Thai food. I always get the Evil Prince, which is a delicious curry of coconut milk, fresh basil, a lovely helping of chicken, bamboo shoots, and cabbage w/ the perfect amount of spice and heat, along with a side of rice and a really tasty fried egg roll. Before the meal is served, you also choose between a small helping of their soup or salad. Both are nice bites to help stimulate the appetite. All their other curries are delicious too and every dish comes in a decent portion for a great price. Dinner is slightly more expensive and they serve their dishes almost family-style, in larger portions w/ a big bowl of rice to share at the table. However, the dinner meals do not come with an egg roll. I believe lunch is served M-F from 11 am to 2 pm and only dinner is served from 5-9 pm on the weekends. I give 4.5 stars for lunch, but 4 stars overall because dinner was ok and sometimes the service is slow. read more

My wife and I are huge fans of this place. Very friendly and helpful staff. It's hard enough finding a restaurant in Redding that caters to vegans but that has really good food as well.The drunken noodles with tofu are my favorite and the little woman loves anything they put peanut sauce on. My family decided to try Thai Cafe for the first time tonight, and it was just okay. I lived in Thailand for over half a year and became obsessed with pad gra pow; when I eat at another place in town i can order it the thai way (all the ingredients minced with an over easy egg on top), that was a no go here :(. We found this place by accident -- it DOES look like a dive bar from the outside (cinderblocks painted a sort of pale seafoam blue??). We've been there for lunch a few times, and find it to be a pleasant place to eat, and the food is good. I've actually had fresher, spicier Thai food in Portland, but this place is the best Asian food I've found in Redding. It's on this wierd sort of back-street below one of the hospital complexes in town, so it's a little hard to find. read more

Just some good, basic thai. Thai Cafe has a modest feel and simplicity to both its atmosphere and its food. the meals are wholesome and delightful, and my favorite part, cheap! Could be a bit spicier, but no real complaints. Good service, as well. Just FYI, if you order the chicken curry, they usually seem to short you some vegetables, I always order tofu so my meal is great but just keep that in mind. I guess if you order chicken, you've made your choice. For three people, three dishes, and a soda it came out to $24. Each of the three curries comes with two scoops of rice and a fried spring roll. My longtime favorite has been the the Evil Prince, a green curry with shredded cabbage, bamboo, broccoli, and zucchini medallions. Get it, it's great. read more
