It was a little chilly and I felt the need for some nice hot noodles and protein. I drove around the shopping center thinking about where I wanted to eat when I saw Thai basil. It's a small restaurant but very cozy. Amy, the server was very nice. When I arrived there were a few people eating. The one thing I actually found annoying was the man at the table behind me was on his phone speaking loudly the entire time I was there. He finished dinner maybe moments before I did. I would've appreciated had Amy told him you know not to be on the phone like that while people were eating. It was very very disturbing. Another thing I didn't really like was that they didn't give you a salad or something with your dinner. Most Thai restaurants either give you soup or a salad with your dinner. Now onto the food. The food was delicious. I started with the shrimp a blanket and for dinner I had pad siew. I'm probably not spelling it correctly, but it was very tasty. The portion of noodles was quite large. I got the combination version that's supposed to come with shrimp chicken and beef. There were only two shrimp in my dish which I was not happy about. Overall, it was a good experience. Yes it would've been better if I didn't have a loud man screaming into a phone behind me through the whole meal. And yes, I would've probably enjoyed a salad before my dinner. But overall, it was a good experience and I probably would return. read more

We walked into Thai Basil in West Palm Beach at 6 PM on a Saturday night... and it was just us. Not another diner in sight. For a split second, I thought maybe the place had been rented out for a private party we weren't invited to. But, trusting the good reviews, we decided to stay and risk it. Worst case? We'd get our food before the menus even hit the table. We started with the curry puffs--crispy, warm, nicely seasoned. Solid little bites, though not exactly the type of appetizer you dream about later like an old high school crush. My salad with peanut dressing followed, but the dressing was more watery than I'd like. Tasty, yes, but I like my peanut dressing to hug the lettuce, not run away from it. And then--boom--the Penang curry chicken arrived and stole the spotlight. This was the real deal. The flavors were rich and balanced, with that "made from scratch" depth you can't fake. I asked for mine spicy and they nailed it--just the right amount of heat to make me sweat a little but still want to keep eating. And, I like it hot! Mission accomplished without losing flavor!! My wife went mild, and hers looked like it had been painted in softer pastels while mine was done in neon flames. Same dish, two totally different personalities. The owner came by to chat, and she was a delight. Turns out they grow their own peppers and make all their curries from scratch. Suddenly, it all made sense--the freshness, the layered flavors, the fact that my taste buds felt like they were on a guided tour of Thailand instead of eating reheated sauce from a jar. So yes, the restaurant was empty when we walked in. But this isn't a ghost town--it's a hidden gem. A 30 years in business hidden gem. Next time, I'm bringing more people along, partly for the company and partly so I don't feel like I accidentally booked a private dining experience. read more

Yes, the restaurant is in a nondescript shopping center with several closed stores. And, yes, the decor has a pedestrian Asian motif. But at Thai Basil, it's all about the food. The owner, Amy, prepares and serves the dishes herself. The food is delicious, the portion sizes are good, and the variety of options will satisfy everyone. I went for dinner with some friends (Thai Basil is not open for lunch), and we shared some appetizers and entrees. Everything was fresh and hot. The satay chicken skewers were tender and came with a nice peanut dipping sauce. The steamed dumplings were stuffed with chicken, shrimp and mushrooms - amazing! The drunken noodles with beef was our favorite entree. Simply delicious! We also enjoyed the masaman curry with chicken, coconut milk, potatoes and carrots. Lastly, we had the pineapple chicken fried rice. Although it was good, it did not stand out as a particularly inspired dish as compared to the others. The restaurant was not busy when we visited on a Thurs evening. We will definitely return and taste some of the other items on the menu. Amy clearly enjoys cooking for her guests and I hope she can continue to expand her business as more people hear about Thai Basil. Easy to find in a large plaza, Thai Basil brings Asian food to an area that really lacks it. Most of the plaza is empty which is sad to see. Walking in, the host stand is way too close to the door. A bit awkward when another party is walking in with you. Luckily we were seated pretty quickly. The restaurant is not aesthetic and not much detail has been put into the dining room appeal. However, the food and price points do make up for it. We ordered an appetizer and a soup and they hit the table fairly quickly. The fresh rolls were great! The menu said it's created with teriyaki chicken but you can't really taste any flavor with the ground chicken they put inside. There's also carrots and bean sprouts accompanied with a light dipping sauce. The Tom Kha soup was thick but delicious. Our two main entrees were great. I ordered the singapore noodles. It was a bit saucier than I'm use to but I liked the concept of ordering a dish and adding your choice of protein inside. The Pad Thai has been very dry, so always ask for extra sauce on it. Thursday ordered 2 Pad Thai, 3*. There was no heat or flavor to it. The egg was burnt, which left a burnt taste throughout the food. I'm not sure if there is a new cook, but, I feel it's time to find another Thai restaurant. read more

First time at Thai Basil, we came for dinner and I can't wait to go back. I think this is the best red curry I've tasted! It was so flavorful and packs a bit of heat but not too much, and I had enough leftover for lunch the next day. Comes with a scoop of steamed rice on a separate plate. The owner (I think she's the owner, not sure) said the waitress was out, so she was on double duty cooking and serving, and the service was still very fast and attentive. We were traveling for a concert and stopped for a bite to eat. This was one of the thai spots in the area and I'm so glad we stopped here. The menu has so many options and we got the Chicken Tempura Pineapple Fried Rice with the Dumplings as an appetizer and Thai Tea to drink. The plate of rice and dumplings were enough for the two of us with how much was served. The thai tea served here is delicious, and I would absolutely recommend. We love this family-owned restaurant. We have been coming for years and find it's the best Thai in the area. Amy, the owner and host is so warm and welcoming. Their ramen soup is bigger than my child's head and the noodles are fresh! The red curry and lemongrass curry are delicious and veggies are fresh from the garden! Give it a try. He didn't like the fact there was only 2 shrimp in the combo fried rice and it also included calamari rings which was a first and not okay with him. Food was terrible. It was too sweet, and tasted like they added sugar. I personally ordered the lemongrass curry, and it was very sweet. The service was mediocre at best. At points, you could see them standing around and talking, even after people called them multiple times. The resturant looked like a fake Japanese resturant. It looked nothing like an actual Thai resturant, more like a Chinese and Japanese one mixed together. There was music being played quite intrusively, and was coming out of an out of place, green JBL. We order Pad Thai without sugar and it's delicious, Penang curry without flour, soy and sugar and very little hot spice and it's incredible. All other Thai restaurants tell us "no" because their sauce is already prepared. I can trust that the food and sauces at Thai Basil will be fresh because it is made to order. They do not use MSG or sauces from cans. Amy is such a delightful person and she and her husband work the restaurant alone. It is a hidden gem tucked away in the in the northwest corner of Southern Blvd and 441 in Royal Palm Beach. We travel from Boynton Beach to eat here, it's that good! I ordered my food through a delivery service. The flavor was good, but not exactly what I was hoping for. I ordered the chicken Pad Thai with extra sauce medium spicy and the Tom Ka Gai soup medium spicy. The Pad Thai had a little extra sauce but was very sweet. No spice at all. The soup had a little spice, but was more on a level 0-1 than a level 3. The food was hot temperature wise and tasted fresh. The soup had a bit strong lemongrass flavor more than other Thai restaurants of the same soup. I just wish it had a lot more spice. Level 3/ medium spicy is what I asked for, and this was level 0 to 1 at best for the soup and just sweet for the Pad Thai. read more

Firstly, the place was quasi-packed and there was only one waitress available. Took us forever to get our order in and we must have waited 45 minutes for bland calamari, overwhelmingly sweet combination pad Thai (with a couple of tiny bits of meats), and duck skin. The only good thing about the place was the water, notwithstanding we had to wait so long to get it, and wait for straws, too. In a large shopping strip of stores with plenty of parking, is the small restaurant that's worth the drive. Most everything we've had there has been quite good. We've taken 2 different groups and all have concurred. Don't be put off by the many empty store fronts, just circle around -- it's closer to the post office side. Tonight my husband had the tom yum goomg soup with shrimp to start and I had a small salad with ginger dressing (you can get peanut dressing if you prefer). He had a number 4 on the hot scale (out of 5) -- and said it was perfect for him but would be too spicy hot for me. We shared an order of crispy duck with basil sauce. You can also choose ginger or curry or one other sauce type. The duck was very good with bits of scallions, onions, red peppers, and carrots. Next time I'd request the sauce on the side to keep it crispier. We had to stuff ourselves to finish the last few pieces. Can't wait to go back... There were some specials on the board that looked interesting,too (fiery eggplant? Duck soup?)
