Please pass this on, I am a 66 yr old LMSW , in home health care worker who pulled a 12 day yesterday caring for two elderly patients in their eighties.
I waited 2 weeks for an appointment and am out of my thyroid medication.
I am tired, but I managed to keep my appointment this morning.
However this is how it went.
I arrived I am fully vaccinated so did not enter wearing a mask. Upon reaching the window, I was told I needed to wear a mask I said I was fully vaccinated, but was told again, it's office policy, very curt. So I left to the parking lot to rummage my car for a mask. I am tired, couldn't find one so I grabbed a scarf and wrapped it around my face
At the window once again, and I am told. No you can't wear that. It must be a mask and was handed one to wear.
There were patients in the office so I became embarrassed and flustered. and took off my scarf and placed on the mask as I was told.
. Not hello, or good morning , nothing
Then I was asked for my packet. At this point I explained I couldn't download it as I didn't have a working computer. The Caucasian woman rolled her eyes, got up and went to the printer and printed one out. Again I was made to feel like an incomadent imbecile. She handed me the printed booklet and asked for my insurance card.
I was flustered and still tired and could not find my card. I was fully covered, and now really looking stupid. I handed the very nice Black reception ist at the window my Medicare card and explained I had United Health care through AARP plan F. She went ahead and did the computer check in for me. So I sat down to fill out the papers.
Wearing glasses I pulled my mask from my nose to be able to read the application. As soon as I did that, a nurse or tech assistant had entered the room to collect a patient came up to me and told me to pull my mask over my nose.
I explained I just pulled it down because I could not see, my glasses fogged
And was quickly told I could pinch the nose
Well by now I was getting angry. I was tired, tried to be accommodating but I was being reprimanded every step of the way. So I told the RN I was a health care worker and fully vaccinated and she said, "Shame on you,you should know better"
I told her I didn't mind following all the rules( I was a new patient) but I felt like leaving because everyone ones message to me so far had not considered my story, my feelings, and she said "you have that choice. I am the nicest person you could ever meet"
Considering where I was coming from, pulled a long stint, out of medication for a few days, waited 2 weeks for an appointment and felt totally stupid by now, I said you're right.
And I got up and left.
I hope you read this as I am planning to post this.
This is a perfect example why Social Workers were brought on the team in the Medical Field. There was absolutely no Empathy extended to me!
Yes you can make excuses. But no one took the time to see where I was coming from at all.
And I can tell you now, judging from the office staff, I couldn't imagine the Doctors being anymore understanding.
Very Sincerely
