From the very first visit, something felt different here. Nearly three years ago, I had explored another martial arts studio in Sunnyvale, and the experience felt impersonal and it just didn't feel like a place where my kids would truly belong. I didn't experience any of that at Sunnyvale MAA -- not on day one, and not now. What sets this place apart is the people. The instructors and the entire team here genuinely care -- not just about teaching technique, but about every single child as an individual. I have two kids enrolled, and I'm consistently amazed that all of the instructors know little details about both of my children, even the ones who haven't directly taught them. That level of attentiveness and personal connection is rare, and it speaks volumes about the culture and team have built here. My oldest started hesitantly, he told me he only wanted to make it to his second belt. That was his ceiling. Fast forward almost two years, and he is now setting his sights on black belt. That transformation didn't happen by accident. It happened because the instructors strike such a thoughtful balance of discipline, encouragement, and genuine support. They push the kids to grow while making sure they feel safe, seen, and celebrated along the way. Watching his confidence soar has been one of the most rewarding things I've witnessed as a parent. And the impact is contagious. My youngest spent nearly a year watching her brother thrive on that mat, and she couldn't wait any longer, she recently joined the Little Dragons program and absolutely loves it. Seeing both my kids light up when they walk through those doors, excited to see their friends and their KJNs, says everything. The community here is welcoming, inclusive, and warm in a way that is hard to put into words but impossible to miss. If you are on the fence about enrolling your child, come watch a class. You'll feel it immediately, and so will they.

She's now part of the performance team, where her teachers continue to push her growth not just in martial arts skills, but in teamwork, mental resilience, and leadership. The care that the owner and instructors put into their school is clear in everything they do. The teaching is structured and challenging, with high expectations, yet always warm, kind, and adaptable to each child's needs. The curriculum and expectations are clearly communicated, and the class schedule is very flexible, with multiple sessions offered for each level throughout each day to ensure that each family can choose the schedule that works best for them. I'm so grateful for SVMAA. It's an incredible community that has brought out the best in my daughter.

Pure Taekwondo has changed our son's self confidence in the best way possible. He started out as a…read moreshy kid who questioned his own ability, but at the same time was super self critical of himself. As he continued his journey, that same energy evolved to him wanting to consistently improve and advance. He would watch the more advanced belts in awe and would get excited knowing he could be at that level one day. The format and schedule of practice times are super flexible. We gave him the autonomy to choose when he would go to practice which promoted self motivation. He would come home practicing his forms and kicks and we could see the joy this sport gave him. In addition, he's become stronger physically. Little guy has a mini six pack and his push up form is pretty legit. Grandmaster Carlos does an incredible job managing and teaching kids from all levels. He understands every child has their own physical limits, but still sees the potential in each individual and pushes them to try to achieve it. His classes are very well run and consistently sets an atmosphere of discipline, respect, and focus. Last night our child broke his first board and advanced to yellow belt. We told him how proud of him we were, and for the first time ever, His response was "I'm proud of myself too". Core memory locked. Program is worth every penny (which honestly is very affordable)

Master Carlo is truly dedicated to the art and tradition of Taekwondo in its purest form. Master…read moreCarlo teaches Tae Guk and Palgwe style forms and is registered with Kukkiwon in Korea Discipline - He doesn't waste waste time when it comes to teaching both children and adults and has a high focus on instilling the discipline to learn both in and out of class for the younger students. It does not matter the age, if a student earns a belt level they are expected to perform at that level and will be given the proper respect for that regardless of age. Everyone takes pride in their achievement knowing it was earned with hard work and accuracy. I have seen this reflected in a change in discipline and personal accountability in children at home and in school over the two years I have worked with the children and their parents. Adaptability - During the covid pandemic Master Carlo equipped his studio with ceiling to table technology and opened online and remote teaching for *established* students which allowed students who moved away due to parents work to continue with the class they know. As far as I have seen his students are consistent and remain unless they move away. Classes are at a reasonable time and a VERY GOOD workout for adult classes (advanced lower belt children are free to attend these classes thus far after displaying maturity to work with adults). Several parents join in with their kids as well. The other instructors run great classes as well and offer very high performance advice. Special Needs & Disabilities - Master Calro does work with students that have learning needs and are otherly abled both children and adults. His approach is very gentle and focused on pride in personal achievement with these students but does not set them apart from the other students or make them feel discluded in anyway. For adults and children with physical injuries or disabilities Master Carlo has a litany of alternative practice techniques to allow us to adapt and enjoy the class without risking injury. I am one of these students. Self Defence - If your goal is more geared toward practical self defence Pure Taekwondo also offers this and I can say I've seen some pretty amazing stuff in this area. Competitions- Pure Taekwondo does participate in local competitions and tournaments if enough students desire to go in advance and will prepare them for winning with the contact sport point system. Students are encouraged to choose whichever category they feel attracted to weather that is just one or all. students are informed MONTHS in advance to plan accordingly and we go as a team. It's fun to have everyone cheer each other on. Parents- Parents that are not participating are free to stay and observe the classes and their child's progress but are encouraged to step away and enjoy the hour to themselves (nearby or away) winding down so their children can focus on the full experience of making mistakes, knowing that's ok, and learning without the pressure of possibly disappointing a loved one when they learn something new and challenging. This is also to prevent performance anxiety in other children and adults as well. It's always fun to listen to parents see what appears to be a sudden change in skill level when they do see their kids perform, but trust it was well earned. But again, you are free to stay.

The day I requested to discontinue, that *same day* they charged me for the next full month, knowing fully well that we won't taking lessons. This was 5 days *before* the regular day they normally charge for the next month. When I requested a refund, I was told that it would be more convenient to sign up for summer camps. And if I chose to not go for summer camps, I could get a refund. We didn't end up signing up for summer camps and so I requested a refund after school started. The emails went unanswered. 3 reminders later, when I managed to get in touch with Master Hung, I am shown the rule-book and that it's too late to request refund for May.

Each lesson begins with warm up stretching exercises and regular exercises like jumping jacks, push ups,and sit ups. Master Hung takes time to make sure they are doing these correct too. They do drills helpful for tae kwon do, like scissor kicking and knee hops. Then, they work on their different techniques for kicking and striking. My son likes the sparring the best. He uses the big blue shields that the studio provides. My daughter has her own bag of sparring gear, helmut, chest, arm, leg, and mouth guards. There is controlled sparring and sparring exercises, example, two lines of kids facing each other, 3 front kicks forward and 3 front kicks back. Contact is ok because of the shields and protective gear. This is also carefully controlled by Master Hung. Kids are not trying to hurt each other. Master will also teach kids to use double techniques and to stack their opponents. Kids also learn kata's for each of their belts. Kids get more belts than adults. They will go thru a white belt with a yellow stripe, orange stripe, and a black stripe. Then a yellow belt with different stripes. After passing a test, kids break a board with the technique for that belt and go thru the ceremony for the new belt. My kids enjoy taking classes once a week. Two classes would give them more practice and advanced them faster, but my son enjoys taking gymnastic classes (Goldstar Gymnastics) every week too and my daughter likes to take a different class, like ice skating or swimming. There is a fee for the uniform, each belt test, and later on, sparring gear. But the fees and equipment are comparable to other classes like gymnastics (leotard), swimming (swim suit), soccer (cleats), and ice skating. I like that this class is educational for my kids, teaches them courtesy, respect, and exercises them.

Elite Taekwondo Center is one of the Bay Area's foremost taekwondo studios, headed by one of the…read morecountry's most distinguished instructors, Grandmaster Kwangil Bae. If you're looking for quality instruction, ETC is a no-brainer. Grandmaster Bae is a world-class instructor, athlete, and international referee. He was recently appointed Head Coach of the AAU National Poomsae Team and is always up-to-date on the latest rules/regulations due to his connections at Kukkiwon (World Taekwondo Headquarters in Seoul). As such, you should expect only the highest level of instruction, as well as incredible opportunities for growth that can't be found at other Bay Area martial arts studios. Joining ETC (or GM Bae's other studio in Palo Alto) is akin to attending a top university like Harvard: you get as much out of it as the effort you put in, but your ceiling becomes much higher due to the availability of resources. For reference: I began training with GM Bae in Palo Alto as a blue belt, having transferred from another studio. Under his guidance, I reached the rank of 3rd-dan black belt, won medals at NorCal State Championships and the US Open, became a nationally-certified referee, and attended seminars led by world champions. GM Bae has an innate talent for teaching, and he has both an incredibly nuanced sense of the rhythm and aesthetics of poomsae (forms) and an intelligent understanding of sparring tactics. He designs exercises and describes physical motions in a way that is informative and easily accessible, and he truly embodies the spirit of taekwondo as not only a sport, but also a lifestyle. Elite Taekwondo Center offers classes for all ages and types of students, from beginners to nationally-ranked competitors. In terms of teaching style, GM Bae instills a strong sense of discipline and respect within his students, yet always makes sure to treat us with genuine warmth and care. There is a palpable sense of community and respect within the studio that has been crucial to my personal growth, and as an assistant instructor, it has been a pleasure to see even the youngest students mature into sharp, talented individuals. I really can't stress enough how valuable of an opportunity it has been to train with Master Bae - he is truly a one-of-a-kind instructor.

My experience with their kids' program has been nothing short of exceptional, hats off to the incredible instructor, Travis! From day one, it was evident that Travis was not only highly skilled in Krav Maga but also knew the knack of teaching and working with children. Whether a child was struggling with a technique or excelling at it, Travis was present very watchfully, providing guidance, support, and positive reinforcement. One of the things that stood out to me the most was Travis's ability to create a supportive and encouraging environment for the kids. Moreover, he has a unique talent for breaking down complex techniques into simple, easy-to-understand steps, making it accessible and observable for children of all skill levels. What stood out to me in particular was his own values, principles and attitude which in my opinion are of paramount importance especially while teaching life skills to others. Beyond his technical expertise, Travis also instilled important values such as team work, discipline, respect, and self-confidence in the children. Through his teaching, my child not only gained valuable self-defense skills but also developed a sense of empowerment and self-assurance that extends beyond the mat. Beth, who is also an instructor and helps with the front desk, is extremely patient and helpful with any questions and a great teacher herself from the classes I've observed! If you're considering enrolling your child in Krav Maga classes, look no further than Krav Zone!

I do agree that it's good to warm up before starting classes but I feel that there might be too much time running back-and-forth. Occasionally it feels like a way to keep us busy while they are speaking to other people. We've had a couple classes with Beth, she is very nice and patient with the little ones. Travis was our main coach for a few months and I can tell the older kids work better with him. They only have beginner and advanced classes. It would be nice to have an intermediate class as well. I think in general more classes would be helpful as you cannot graduate to certain belts unless you are taking two classes a week. We signed up for a year and will plan to continue for as long as possible. I do recommend this place. * updated to add that now that school has started, they just brought in another trainer (Shlomi) to teach the older kids since the class size has doubled. He is very good at teaching new techniques properly. I feel that he is the best match for my yellow belt 8 year old.
