Went to protest my taxes and called them and gave the woman who answered the phone all my information. I was told the representative of my county would call me. Finally got to the last day to file and had not heard so called the number and got a recording saying leave a message we will call you back. Never heard so with 3 hours left to file I called again only to be told by the woman that answered that "he must have had too many cases and didn't call you" and no apology. I have used other firms in this business in Houston but will never use them again. Very disappointing. read more

I filed a protest, but in my rapidly gentrifying neighborhood, did not have the time to fight the appraisal on my 1950s house. The appraisal seemed insane, but with teardowns and new construction going on all around, I didn't know the best way to come up with comps, argue age of my house, etc. I called Texas Protax and they picked it up and followed through. Protax came up with new terms this year which require a minimum payment regardless of any savings they might acheive. I lived with their exorbitant fee structure in the past because I didn't have time to fight "city hall" and I figured something is better than nothing with no financial risk. Now, with new terms requiring an upfront commitment and Austin signaling they will freeze residential assessments, I have decided to wait, but I keep getting nagging notes from protax to sign their new terms. read more

Texas ProTax has represented us for several years. The process is seamless. They email us at the beginning of the year asking if there have been any changes to our property. Everything is done by email, which makes it easy. If I have a question, they answer promptly. The bottom line is that they have saved us thousands of dollars in taxes over the years. Their fee is increasing slightly this year, since Travis County has made the process more difficult and cumbersome (no surprise that a government entity would do that, right?). In 2018 Texas ProTax did a very nice job getting our taxes lowered. So why 3 and not 5 stars. Well for 2019 we didn't sign up and did not intend to. The other day we get an invoice out of the blue for 2019. We didn't ask for them to do anything or request anything. So the reason they get dinged is that I don't like surprise bills for things I did not order. I was told that we needed to opt out otherwise they will continue to do the work whether or not you own the property. So, here as a public service I say "Caveat Emptor" and cancel when you sign up so that you aren't on the hook for succeeding years. read more

This review is for phone advice that Protax offered gratis. I explained my situation -- TCAD rated my house in a higher "class" than almost any other on the street or warranted by its condition -- and instead of making me hire them on, the person I talked to recommended that I contact TCAD residential assessments directly to see if they would evaluate the data. They did, and their reclassification reduced my house's assessment by 10%. Protax's willingness to offer that advice over the phone saved me, TCAD, (and themselves!) a ton of time and effort. And wasted tax payments! I really appreciate that. read more

Zero communication from them! I informed them that the square footage on my tax statement was overstated and I had blue prints and multiple appraisals for documentation. No one contacted me so this information was not used at my hearing. When I called to complain they told me that the people who go to the hearings don't always get the information the customer provides. In that time, their processes moved like clockwork, communication was straightforward, and each property has seen a reduction in taxes every single year. You only get charged if they win your protest and the fee is just a percentage of the winnings so it's essentially risk-free. If I were to have protested myself, there's no telling how many hours it would have taken me to collect all the necessary information. I have been using ProTax since 2010. I have always referred them to my coworkers, neighbors and friends. As a realtor, I have protested value increases in Williamson County successfully. In my new house in Travis County I thought about representing myself, but a property lawyer suggested ProTax. His opinion means a lot to me so I hired them on. I am sure Glad I did not try to represent myself. The stakes are just to high. A 10 percent increase compounded annually is a HUGE amount year after 10 years! During our phone meeting you were able to read between the lines and decipher what information you needed to be successful. It was not easy as I had no idea where to start. I called to ask about their services. The guy explained their business model and asked my address. He said "Oh, well your's is easy this year. Just eFile an appeal and upload your settlement statement from when you bought the house 6 months ago. They will drop it $100k to that value. Call me next year as the protest will be more difficult at that point." Saved me ~$2000 on my taxes in a 3 minute phone call. I will be calling him next year. read more

Randy T, the reviewer above mine says a large chunk of what I want to say about Texas Protax. They couldn't care less about "you" because they are a mill that does the least possible work for you while your tax appraisal and tax bills continue to rise. Their customer service stinks. Don't expect any at all. I gave Texas Protax specific requests about what I wanted them to do with one of my special properties, which I won't go into here. They never did it. And I ended up paying more taxes. Because Texas Protax intercepts your tax bill, you are dependent upon them to get you the bill in time for payment. One year, I never even received it at all and if I hadn't remembered, I would have had a fat penalty to pay. Their contract is sneaky. If you don't read it thoroughly, you might miss the fact, like I did, that once you sign a contract with them, they continue to intercept your tax bills and do their sub-par protesting for your property and you don't even know they're doing it. The contract continues on into infinity until you end it in writing. I had to go to the Appraisal Office in January 2012 in order to stop them from sending the tax bill to Texas Protax anymore, that's how bad their customer service is. I couldn't help but notice that they have bought or they rent a sprawling building right next to the Tax Appraisal Office and their name is spread in giant letters at the top of the building. Convenient that they move right in next door to the tax office. One time I called Texas ProTax to complain about their poor representation, service, etc., and I got some drone who said she'd tell the President of the company and get back to me. And, of course, she never did. Stay far, far away from Texas Protax It's better to protest in person yourself or find an honest attorney to do it for you. Texas Protax should be reported to the Texas Attorney General (which I'm going to be looking into shortly). read more

I filled out their online form because I wanted more info and they sent me an auto generated email that requested a LOT of information that I knew I didn't have time to provide so I decided 2015 was not the year to worry about it. Then I started getting bills in the mail. Despite never sending them ANY information that would aide them in lowering my tax on this they used my basic online form to do it anyway and succeeded in a VERY tiny amount of reduction (which makes sense since they had no info from me) and then the bills started. I asked the person sending emails how they could possibly consider me a client when I sent in NOTHING and never got a call or anything. She sent back to me my signed online request form. DO NOT use this company. very impersonal and no follow up until you owe them money. read more

When I first used Texas Protax in 2012, they protested the wrong property -- a rental house we own vs. our current home. I guess they looked at the name but didn't check the address? We essentially lost money, since they failed to protest on the property of greater value (and all our neighbors did get a reduction that year). I contacted them several times, and couldn't get a response. Eventually I did get an apology, but not until 2013 when I called because I discovered they were continuing to protest my property automatically. This summer, I got a notice that they protested my property again, though I asked them to stop last year. I contacted them with no response*. Today I got the bill. We'll see if I can get them to reply this time, because I don't feel I should have to pay. The initial mistake, sure, mistakes happen, but it's been fumbled at every turn since, and that's not acceptable. I'm still giving 2 stars, because they did actually get a reduction, so perhaps it's just incompetence in the front office. (Seriously, how do you not check the property address for a property tax protest?!) I'm kicking myself that much of my communication was on the phone so I don't have a complete record. I'm sure they do a fine job for other people and my experience was likely an isolated case, but I recommend you verify all the details carefully, and get everything in writing. *Correction: I received an email reply 2 days later asking me for the property address, which I provided within 15 minutes, then no communication after that until the bill today. read more

Had them handle TCAD assessed value negotiations for 2 properties. With virtually no effort from me, they got each assessment down almost $70K. I was very pleasantly surprised, especially since one of the properties had just been purchased for only $20K less than the assessed value. I handled a contest myself the previous year with very successful results as well (apparantly TCAD just loves to over value my properties), but this year I'm juggling a baby and full time employment so it was well worth a couple hundred bucks to me to not have to mess with anything. Until TCAD stops issuing ridiculous assessments, I get more free time, or I find a reputable company that does this for a smaller cut of my tax savings, I'm going to keep using Protax every year. Received a notice today that Tax Remedy, Inc. merged with Texas Protax Austin, Inc. I want to thank Gil for his past work. I wish him and his associates luck in their new endeavor. Tax Remedy has filed a protest of my property tax assessment three times. The first year was the biggest saving, lowering my Travis County taxes by a fair amount. In subsequent years, there was a moderate change in the county assessment, and they again saved me money. Their fee is based on the decrease in amount of tax owed, due to the change in property value. This is the first time (in my business life) that I enjoy paying a for a professional service. If you do not enjoy collecting data and arguing with regulatory agencies, it makes sense to let a professional review/appeal your property tax assessment. They know the market, and it does not take long for them to understand your situation. read more

We tried their service for 2017 for the first time and per their statement, they saved us $589, not much considering how high our property taxes in our area. We forgot to notify them to not do 2018 (given they don't call, they expect you to get their emails) and got the bill that they saved us similar amount to 2017. I looked back to 2014 in the Traviscad records and didn't notice any real change in our taxes at all. We couldn't tell a difference between 2017-2018 and the prior years we've had our property. I asked them several times to provide me proof of the submission form to the appraisal district and the county's approval of the amount of tax deductions but they've neglected to provide it except only get their "internal" rendition. I don't trust their services (in our situation) as I don't think they are actually representing us but rather charging us for possible deductions the city is already giving you. read more

My only complaint is, the lack of information during the protest process, I filled out their questionnaire and sent pictures but heard nothing back until they said they were successful. They were responsive answering my questions about how to respond to the questionnaire. But, I would like to have known they received the completed questionnaire. But, they did a great job.
