I had used ProTax Austin for years (7-8 I guess) and PREVIOUSLY they did an exception job. In the past I have referred friends and colleagues to them multiple times.
There have been significant changes the last few years and at this point, I would advise everyone to avoid them. Details of some of the numerous issues I experienced follow. It's quite the saga of poor customer service, questionable competence (I'm being polite) and poor representation.
In 2019 ProTax changed their few structure and started charging a retainer fee in advance, which they kept regardless of whether they were able to help you or not. Due to a miscommunication (partly my fault) they did not represent us when the 2019 taxes were due in 2020.
On January 12th of 2021 I reached out to them as I still hadn't heard from them regarding representation for 2020. They informed me they were a bit backlogged and it might be a week or two until I heard back. I didn't get that call back until April 16th, over 3 months later. As the date for filing protests is in May I wasn't too concerned.
Alex was assigned to my account, but when I spoke with him about challenging the inappropriate increase between 2019 and 2020 he said it wasn't clear what caused it and he would find out AT THE HEARING. It was already on record with TCAD that an appraiser had come out and added a 500 s.f. foot out-building that we were already being taxed on. In affect they were now taxing us twice. I asked why he wasn't going to look into in advance so he would be prepared to challenge it at the meeting, but he seemed confused and told me he'd have to talk to his manager.
He DID follow up the next day and told me the increase was in error and they would appeal it.
Two days later (4/24) I received an email from the receptionist saying "we have removed the extra parcel at xxxxxx at it was combined with your other property". No other explanation or clarification. I called on the 29th to find out what that meant and because Alex was in hearings, I spoke with Scott who was confident he could help me. Unfortunately he wasn't aware of what was going on. He promised to get to the bottom of it and call me first thing on the 30th. I never heard back.
At this point I was losing confidence in ProTax, and called and spoke with the manager Debra. She was distressed to hear about the problems but assured me they would reassign the account to their BEST person Gil, and I would get exceptional service! He would be calling me to update me within a day or two. Six WEEKS later I emailed Debra to find out why I hadn't heard anything.
The following day (6/16/21) I got a call from Gil requesting pictures of the outbuilding which I sent the same day. 2 1/2 MONTHS later, during which time I thought the protest was in process, Gil emailed to ask for the pictures again. He apparently had done nothing the entire time and the date for filing had past. He then sent me a form so I could try to get a correction for the 2022 taxes. As I understand their billing, this would allow them to charge me for a percentage of the savings for 3 years of taxes. Questionable behavior in my mind.
Since then I emailed both Gil and Debra asking for an explanation of how they missed the 2021 filing date and dropped the ball so badly. I've had no response. I had also called several times over the previous weeks and left messages for the manager Debra, who has not returned a call. When I tried calling again last month, their phone was no longer being answered. Not sure what their current status is. I emailed them a few weeks ago to terminate their agency.
If you've read this far, I would suggest you try another firm. I have switched to a company recommended by several friends (Five Stone) who was incredibly responsive, and who just informed me the tax records have been corrected. read more
