Back problem with nerve pain down back of legs. Sent to physical therapy and MRI. PT made the problem worse. Excruciating pain on Thursday morning called office could only leave message. Explained the pain was 12 on scale of 10 and need some relief. Was assured that office would call back shortly. The call came the following day at 12 noon and was told I could not get a steroid shot nor pain medication before my appointment on Wednesday. I asked if I was supposed to endure the pain until Wednesday and the rude woman responded with "Let me finish" In her finish she did not ask about the pain nor suggest anything for it. If you want help with your back problems it will be when they get around to it. FYI, by late Thursday, the day of my call, I could not walk for the pain. read more

I can't believe I am writing this review after 3 years as a patient here. However, Jessica Hess, PA is apparently allowed to make up Practice Policies as she goes that a patient hasn't signed. Apparently they have a new policy that isn't posted anywhere, nor is it in any written Practice Policy that I signed, that states that if you are 10 mins late, she can up and decide to reschedule your appointment. Even the office manager said it's a new policy and not in writing nor have they notified their patients of it yet. So after driving 45 mins on toll roads from Fort Worth to Plano, I fell victim to some random "policy" that I wasn't aware of because they don't notify their patients. Save yourself the hassle and don't book with Jessica. She likes to make up policies as goes. read more

I was referred to Texas Back Institute by my PCP for urgent lower back pain. My PCP's nurse had already scheduled me for Friday, Aug 8 at 1 PM. However, the scheduler, Fatima, called insisting no such appointment existed and refused to call me back when I was in a meeting, saying she "doesn't have time." When she called again, her dismissive attitude was the same--constantly interrupting and acting as if patients' concerns don't matter. Now, despite my urgent need for evaluation, she says the first available date is Aug 25--nearly three weeks away. For a clinic specializing in back pain, this lack of empathy and professionalism is unacceptable. Patients in pain deserve respect and timely care. Poor front desk interactions like this will only drive patients away. read more

Extremely poor experience. Unfortunately, I never made it to the appointment phase because their website allows you to book an appointment online, and sends you an appointment confirmation, but then they call you the day before your appointment and tell you that it is actually not confirmed and they try to bait and switch you to a different location at a different time. When there is such an extraordinarily poor experience leading up to an appointment, I could not imagine how bad the actual service is if you actually make it to your appointment. I recommend staying away. read more

I was never able to see the doctor I booked my appt with at the Plano office. I was transferred by them to a PA. It took me a month of calling and sending messages in the portal to get a follow up appt booked after my MRI. When I showed up a couple of min late to my appt, for reasons beyond my control, I had to wait for the receptionist to finish her 10 min phone call before I was told that I had to reschedule because I didn't arrive 15-20 min before my appt. There was no one else in the lobby. Not one other person waiting for an appt that would have been inconvenienced if they took me. That cost me an hour out of my workday, round trip driving, to be told that I had to reschedule. I understand that the doctor's time is valuable but so is mine. I will not go back. Not only was customer service a serious issue but I don't like that I booked with a specific doctor that was recommended to me and was only ever able to see the PA. Meanwhile, 2 months have gone by- primarily due to their scheduling delays. I am still in pain and they cost me 2 months I could have spent getting treated by someone else. read more

I have 3 degenerative discs and 4 bulging discs and willing to pay cash money to stop the pain I have had for 19 years. Nope they just want to keep me on pain meds. read more

I live 40 minutes from Denton/ Frisco (1or more) I was in a lot of pain. Did not see Dr. Boah saw his Assistant Joseph. I even took a disc from previous Ct scan. I was told I needed an MRI that was on 4/17. The service was an avalanche after that. The staff flat out lied to me saying my insurance denied the MRI and couldn't provide me with a denial number that my insurance needed to investigate why. It took more than 8 phone calls to finally find someone who could tell me the truth. Dr. Boahs so called "staff" did not submit the unsigned request to my insurance however, was able to lie about it for over a week. Totally Unacceptable!! The lack of accountability, compassion and professionalism of those people. This is just the beginning. The joke is now, I suppose to get a call from the office manager. I'm sure that will take a month to never. Please be vigilant of your care because I'm sure this is not the first or only place this happens at. read more

Unprofessional from the moment I called appt scheduling. No professional phone etiquette when answering the call. I did not get her name or the name of the office I called. No "good morning", just an abrasive "what is your name and birthdate." Not even "May I please have your name and birthdate." I was taken aback and said so. Forms that were sent for me to complete via the portal were unreadable. See image attached. I completed what was readable. Drove 45 mins in morning rush hour traffic and made it right on time. They had additional very detailed forms that were never included in the original portal forms. Jessica, the PA, canceled my appt while I was in the lobby working on the new forms. She abruptly cancelled because I was suppose to be there at a time of her liking; yet, no other patient was waiting in the lobby to see her and she was with a patient in an exam room; I was not delaying her in any way. Unacceptable. Unprofessional. Incompetent. Sadly, Dr. Guyer most likely has no idea how his staff are treating patients (customers). Good luck having surgery. It was my first visit. I went to the McKinney location. The doctor was almost one hour late seeing me. No explanation or apology. Was asked to bring a computer record of my prior back x-rays and scans. I did this but the receptionist refused to accept it. Something about computer viruses. I was seen by the intake nurse, the PA and then the doctor. All felt rushed and somewhat disconnected. I was asked to have my prior back doctor's office send them my surgery records which I did and confirmed it was done. It seemed that the doctor never looked at them or if he did he never mentioned it. He wrote two prescriptions that he never told me he was doing and therefore never explained why he was writing them or what they were for. I only found out about them when the pharmacy notified me that they were ready. Then had to Google them to find out what they were for. Finally, when I was contacted about my follow-up appointment I canceled it and explained why. The person seemed concerned and said the office manager would call me. The office manager never called which didn't surprise me. They just don't seem to care. read more

Horrible everything!! From communication to ghosting to not wanting to help you out and overall sucks

In November of 2022 I was seen by Dr. Hisey after being referred to this practice for my extreme back pain. I had X-rays done then spoke with Dr. Hisey. He asked about my pain, and what it prevented me from doing. I began by mentioning how I was unable to even move the dishes from the sink to the dishwasher without wanting to scream from pain and he laughed. He said "everyone wants an excuse to not do the dishes." I was 25 and female and maybe if I had not been, he might have taken me seriously. He did not let me continue to give examples and said my scoliosis was not severe enough to warrant an on-paper diagnosis, because it would be "more trouble than it's worth" to do so. I have become more disabled since then, with more pain and less ability to do things I love. I cried when I got home that night and doubted myself and how bad things were. I pushed myself to do more, and it has been detrimental to my health. I have often been afraid to seek out help from doctors since then, fear of being yet again sent away and dismissed with a condescending chuckle. I am writing this tonight exactly 3 years later to warn anyone who is thinking of seeing this man to seek other options. And if a doctor does dismiss you in this way, to not doubt yourself. You know your body better than a man who has sat in front of you for 5 minutes. You deserve better. And I hope you get it. read more

Dr. Bosita was great. However I was disappointed with the clinic billing and administration dept. I had a $55k neck surgery with Texas Back Institute. The clinic pre-approved surgery with UHC and knew my $8k max out of pocket had been met several times over. However, the clinic still insisted I pay the full amount for PT up front until UHC processed the Hospital claim which can take up to 45 days. Which means they expect me to front $3-4k over my max amount out of pocket costs even though TX Back Istitute knows we are just waiting on UHC to process on their end. read more

I keep hearing about the quality of the doctors here, but the staff here doesn't want to track the referrals from the fax machine, and won't attempt to make appointments without them. They stopped returning my doctor's office's calls trying to track down the referral they've sent 3 times in the last 3 days. This TBI is upstairs and to the left off the elevator. Very easy to miss if you look right and end up walking the circle. Once you enter there is a COVID station to fill out a questioner and use hand sanitizer. If you forgot a mask and get this far into the building, there are also complimentary masks. Once you fill out the questionnaire you will give it to the receptionist who will check you in. Of this is the first visit she will let you know that another person to the right will call you to verify insurance and copy your cards. The waiting chairs are amazing. Perfect for folks with bad backs. Once you get called to the back the chairs are not so nice. The nurses and doctors are all very nice and professional. I believe I spent more time with my nurse than my doctor but I didn't mind because the doctor is ON IT. My doctor was amazing and got me referred to another specialist. There is a X-ray machine in the office but if you need a MRI you will have to get referred out. Check out is also a breeze. The doctor gives you a form to take to the check out desk which is right outside the office area near the receptionist. This is also where you will pay any copays. Great clinic that will listen to you and get all the images needed to diagnose and help in the process of taking care of YOU! read more

Well this is a disappointment. I had back surgery here twice (2010 with Dr. Zigler) (2017 with Dr. Kutz- who left). I started struggling with my back again. Oh my god! NO ONE ANSWERS THE PHONE HERE! Probably a wait of 30 minutes before someone picks up and that doesn't guarantee you will get the help you need. I apologize for my screaming lol. But back pain is no joke! If you are going to have this huge facility with so many doctors, you are going to need phone staff! You need to think about your patients. This last time I felt like it was so hard to see the Dr. I had to see Dr. Zigler's PA first. A lady who I won't say her name but has no bedside manners. I didn't feel comfortable having an appointment with her. Waste of my time and money to say the least! Then on another appointment when I finally get to see Dr. Zigler (who failed to read my chart before seeing me) and asks me who did my surgeries..... Then he tells me after I receive a spinal shot I will see the PA again. Why?? Anyway needless to say, I just went and found another spine orthopedic surgeon who is amazing! Well...it pains me to do this but after so much effort to establish contact with TBI's patient support team for GENERAL support and assistance only to receive nothing by crickets; I have no choice but to rate TBI with 1-star. Let me share more... ...Firstly, I will state that my doctor is Dr. Jessica Shellock. She is a saint. Professional, courteous, kind, humble, and approaches each case with fresh perspective and long-term outcomes in mind. After two failed discectomies to repair L5/S1 disc herniations following an at-work injury sustained in 2008, I had yet another recurrence in the summer of 2021. Knowing that a discectomy would not be the best course of action, I sought multiple opinions and options. Long story short, I decided to go with Dr. Shellock and the team at TBI. Being a resident of Massachusetts, the team of TBI did the very best the could to accommodate appointments virtually leading up to the procedure itself, minimizing financial impact on my partner and I and ensuring that I could continue moving forward with the care I so desperately needed. From consult to post-op recovery in Texas, TBI was a concert of star-studded professionals who (I felt) cared immensely for the well-being and successful outcome for everyone. Unfortunately, the tone of my review is about to change - and I must apologize in advance. Ironically, I recall when returning to TBI for a follow-up, I was in the elevator with another patient who had asked if I had undergone my procedure, what it was that I had done, etc. I didn't mind sharing. It was what he said after that really concerned me. In essence, he said that I shouldn't be surprised when I become just another number to them. I nervously laughed/shrugged it off and went about my merry way. Fast forward to my three-month post-op appointment, I had not experienced what this gentleman had said, and so I rode the wave of positivity and when I spoke with my surgeon, I even made mention how much interest I had in being an advocate for Texas Back Institute. So much so, I would be willing to share my testimonial publicly in an effort to help others like me learn how TBI can help them secure a bright future pain-free. A few months go by. I am rocking and rolling. Finished with physical therapy, returned to weight training and back to my goal weight; generally, still riding that wave of positive vibes. Then it was time for my 6-month post-op imaging and update. In order to do this virtually, I need to have a referral for X-rays to be completed at my local provider and sent to TBI before I can see Dr. Shellock. In addition, my partner, his family and I were planning to visit Six Flags. As an avid roller coaster fan, I was hoping to enjoy some of the rides. However, I wanted to make sure that I cleared this with Dr. Shellock given my recent procedure. Needless to say, I was not able to enjoy the outing as much as I wanted to, in fear of doing something wrong. For weeks, I attempted to establish contact with the patient care team at TBI. Going as far as to reach out to Gracyn Bailey, Dr. Shellock's surgery scheduler. Unknowingly, Dr. Shellock's Medical Assistant had departed, leaving a gap in established patient care. Weeks turned to months. I continue to call, email, call again, leave agitated voicemails... ...nothing. Crickets. Silence. Despite my best efforts, recent interactions with the patient care team (or should I say, a lack thereof) at TBI have proven one thing. TBI simply does not care about its established patients once they've completed their procedure, shelled out thousands of dollars, and have recovered. It is sad to say, but the gentleman in the elevator was right all along. I have become just another number to them. I am approaching 9-months post-op. Just a week ago, I finally received a call from TBI. I was told that they would work to get my referral over to my provider so that I can have my X-rays taken. I've yet to hear back from TBI or my provider. I am taking vacation to Orlando in a few weeks. Yes, that means theme parks, rides, etc. I still don't know if I am going to be able to enjoy it as much as I would like to. I still have yet to receive any guidance from Dr. Shellock on the matter. I've yet to receive any communication worth noting from TBI after MONTHS of trying to reach SOMEONE...ANYONE...for support. I don't know who is in charge of patient support at TBI, but there needs to be a SERIOUS review on how patient support is managed for established patients. It is crystal clear that there is a disconnect/lack of consistency throughout the patient care cycle. New patients = New money = EPIC service Established patients = NO money = Who gives a fuck? Understand, this is but one perspective. I bet I am not far off though! Oh, and my offer to provide testimonial is off the table. Not because I am unhappy with the outcome of my procedure, but because of the fact that I am no more than a number to TBI. For that, 1 star. read more

Saw Dr. Staub for an evaluation and he seemed personable and frank about my condition. Did not go back. After the visit, their billing department sent me an email a year later! for a co-pay that I am guessing I did not pay at the time (I don't remember, it was a year ago). Never received a bill before that and nothing in the mail. The link in the email to pay online did not work (just goes back to the home screen with the amount due), tried two different times.Tried to call their billing department four times and it rolled to voice mail each time. Left messages twice and never received a return phone call. Finally called the front desk of Texas Back Institute to tell them about the problem and was put on hold and then transferred to the same billing voice mail! The bill says severely past due and dropped my credit score by 4 points. Never going back there again. read more

If some unfortunate, known or unknown event lands you in this office, know that you are in good hands! I had originally been told by word-of-mouth to seek out Dr Guyer at the TX Back Institute by a massage therapist who had had back issues himself and seen many clients prior to--and after--all kinds of issues and procedures. He told me Dr Richard Guyer has been published several times and helped develop disc replacement technology. He believes that Dr Guyer is a doctor who is a passionate learner--excelling in his field. When I called the institute, I was told that I could not see Dr Geyer based on his specialization, schedule, or steps that would need to be pursued prior to seeing him. I was, however, told of two doctors at the Plano location who he often refers patients too. One of those doctors is a young, bright, doctor who worked at Rush University Medical Center and graduated from the University of PA School of Medicine-- Dr Peter Derman (he works in several of the TX Back Institute offices). I looked up his reviews online and was pleased to see great feedback from his patients. Dr Derman voiced that he strongly shared my preference for non-medical and non-invasive options for treatment prior to pursuing medications, expensive imaging, or more extreme options. This was the most severe and longest-lasting low back episode I had had in 9 years. The pain and lack of mobility were becoming intensified with chiropractic and massage - rather than alleviated (as it had in the past). The condition forced me to work from home (mostly while laying on the floor) in a newly acquired job, killed any social life, and really pushed me towards the pit of despair:p... At my first visit, Dr Derman wrote my employer a note recommending that I work from home for the week, prescribed PT, turmeric supplements, an NSAID and muscle relaxer (on top of the steroids I had started the day before meeting him), and told me to call if I wasn't feeling better after the steroids and other drugs. I finished the steroid pack on a Friday and was wondering how I could return to work on Monday. I called and scheduled an appointment for that Tuesday and was contacted by text and phone call explaining that Dr Derman wanted me to have an MRI done prior to a follow-up appointment. Unfortunately, I was warned that insurance approval could take 3-5 days! When all was set, my MRI was scheduled more than a week after I called to follow-up. I then called and coordinated with the institute and a different imaging facility to be seen that Friday instead which allowed me to follow-up with Dr Derman sooner! The stress of working from home while trying to manage my condition, debilitating pain, and navigating the uncharted (to me) craziness that is the medical system of the US was incredible. I just wanted to work towards solutions quickly and start feeling better. Dr Derman was professional, asked good questions, was super helpful, and educated me. Upon review of my MRI, he gave me a personal referral to a pain management specialist closer to home whom he HIGHLY recommended and has worked closely with. He assured me that I didn't need surgery and confessed that the pain management arena was outside of his scope/specialization. I'm still on a path of recovery and management of my back issue but am thankful that Dr Derman and all of the friendly staff at TX Back Institute who helped me on this journey! From the front desk, check-in, PA, x-ray tech, doctor, and referral/insurance verification specialist, Texas Back Institute staff did a great job and I could see that many of them really care despite seeing tough cases (and grumpy patients) every day! My family doctor faxed my referral more than 10 days ago and ask me to wait for 2 hours to 2 days to let the staff of TBI to handle the fax. I wait for 3 days and found TBI does not have the referral. So I double checked the fax number and ask my family doctor to fax it again 7 days ago and went until yesterday to call TBI. TBI does not have it. I suggest TBI to call my family doctor's office to resolve the issue. TBI insists they cannot do anything other than to let my family doctor to fax it again. I asked yesterday to fax it again. This morning I called TBI, TBI does not have it again and ask me to wait for more time to let them to handle the fax. I try to explain to the lady but she ask me to wait then the phone immediately disconnected. I thought it might be a phone connection issue so I called again. A different lady pick up the phone and hear my story and ask me to wait. When I try to explain to her something is wrong and someone needs to take care of it instead of sending fax again and again. Guess what? She hung up the phone immediately even without an excuse! So I confirm the previous lady did hung up my phone. The office staff are so rude and unprofessional I have to pick up a different facility. My doctor of TBI is very good though. It is a shame! I wish I read the reviews here before I met a doctor here. As other experience, doctors are fine here but office is terrible to work with. I can't get test done. They don't send orders to MRI or other testing facilities until they get constant calls or visit to the office ( you may actually have to face the to get order sent). when my MRI order was denied due to a lack of documentation, I was finally able to talk to the nurse after dozen calls every day, She asked me what She should and how she should do to get it corrected. Believe or not, she was asking me how she could do the job. She didn't where to call or what to do. I don't know what kind of people work here. X-RAY, a doctor ordered, they never call me to schedule, PT. same, they don't send orders. MRI. they don't send orders. You actually have to hutn them down to get something done. I met with Dr Bosita back in December, he ordered an MRI which I had before Christmas. It is now 3/17/2020, I have yet to receive a response from him regarding the reading of my report. I reached out in January via my patient portal and his nurse said he was on vacation. I reached out again in February and she responded with a question of he can reply via the patient portal or would I like to set up an appt to go over my results. Which since she asked me a question in her reply I guess it negated my three previous emails and phone calls asking for a reading of my mri. They never approve medication, will not read my mri report, I have yet to get my epideral injections, I have zero things to say about this facility. I literally have no idea how this is acceptable practice. read more

As a follow up to our initial visit from 2019, my daughter (19 at the time) ended up having a disc replacement L5/S1 and 3+ years later she is doing great. We are grateful to Dr. Guyer and the entire staff and team. They were responsive, the surgery went beautifully, she's active and pain free, and it was a complete success. We flew from NC for this surgery due to the strong recommendation from a golfer (my daughter was a college golfer). Perplexed at the negative reviews as this wasn't our experience at all and we dealt with them on multiple occasions even through the shut down (pandemic). read more

Complete nightmare working with these people. They lost my paperwork twice and delayed my appointment for 2 weeks. A third time I sent the paperwork I asked again if they needed anything and then a week of calling and emailing they add something else. They let multiple days go by without replying and rarely answer the phone when you call. When resending documents timed they say "sorry I don't know what happened with who you are working with but I do things differently just send the docs to me and I will help". 3 times now and now they are saying they can't figure out how to read the X-ray I sent them! Wow! I guess the silver lining is God showed me how incompetent this place is before they touched my spine! Avoid at all costs! read more

Like most people complain about is the wait time. They should be more CONSIDERATE, MINDFUL and RESPECTFUL of their patients' time. They could be running late, I know that, but they should advise patients of this as much time beforehand as possible. They will just let you sit down and wait. You will not even know about it unless you ask the front desk people. And they don't respond in a friendly manner, no smile or apologies. Looks like they are getting inconvenient with patients asking them appointment questions. You get disservice the minute you step in what more do you expect the minute you're really in? Patients are held hostage by the hope of feeling better when they walk out of the door that's why you "patiently" wait (no pun intended). Plus, you already get charged, to add insult to injury. Yes, our appointment was 11 and got called at 11:45. And more waiting inside the room...... We walked out of the office 5 mins before 1PM and spent no more than 10 mins talking to the doctor while inside. I am not exaggerating! They can pull out reports and see for themselves. Well, I guess no one's looking at it that's why we have this issue. They need to do better in scheduling and advising patients of delays in appointments. We got all the technologies right in our fingertips. Take advantage of that. A simple text message will do. Or if they want it old school that is more warm and welcoming, they can approach patients and let them know of the situation. Don't just sit there and do nothing, and I mean NOTHING! I worked for weeks to get a referral for Dr. Zigler and the office is close to impossible to get ahold of. Lisa who handles his apt is extremely rude and unhelpful. I had a minor fender bender on the way to my apt and had to reschedule and she said Dr. Zigler does not take patients that have EVER. been in a car accident. So if you have ever been in any type of car accident don't waste you time and find another doctor. I'm Talking about from the day you were born and yet they didn't tell me this until I did everything g to get an apt. Lisa does not like her job and it shows. Please don't waste your time at this office. I'm a single mom with 5 kids and one who is special needs. She could only see me at 7:30 in the morning and even after I told her I couldn't come that early she rambled on more apt at the same time. If it's this hard to see the doctor I couldn't image what care is like during surgery and post surgery. read more

Call this place and they will take forever to answer or you will get a message saying they are not available. I have been calling for a week and nothing! finally I called and hold for an hour to get a hold of an operator, a lady by name of Nicole answered, her response sounded like she didn't want to work. I told her my situation that I wanted to get a hold of Doctor's Blumenthal personnel because I have been trying to speak to them for a week and they are not returning my call, she said "hold" and she transferred me to the same recording "no one is available" HORRIBLE customer service. I can't believe I wasted so much time here when I went to Texas Spine Consultants and was treated *better and Im already recovering from my fusion. I started *timing my wait in the waiting room. I probably went there over the span of four months looking for answers. They call and yell at you and threaten to reschedule you if you're not 10 min early. But I would wait an average of FORTY MIN to even get into the exam room then wait an average of TWENTY more minutes before seeing the doctor who would spend 5-7 minutes talking to me.
