El Patron Authentic Mexican Cuisine

El Patron Authentic Mexican Cuisine

We stopped at El Patron on my birthday, mostly because we were nearby and it was hotter than hell…read moreoutside. Turned out to be a pretty good place to escape the heat for some Mexican food and, more importantly that day, a couple of cold drinks. The chips and salsa were good, and I asked for the hot salsa which was much more my speed. We also got the cheese dip, and honestly between that, the salsa and the chips I probably could have called it a meal. Our actual meals were good too. Nothing that absolutely blew us away, but good portions, everything tasted good and we certainly didn't leave hungry. The drinks were another story -- those were hitting just fine. Service was okay. Everyone was friendly enough, but they seemed a little distracted and it wasn't the most attentive service we've had. The restaurant itself is colorful and fun with a ton of personality. Since it was my birthday, I also got the full treatment -- birthday song, giant sombrero and a shot of what I'm pretty sure was some very inexpensive tequila. Can't complain about that! Overall, we had a good time. I probably wouldn't make a special trip across town specifically for El Patron, but if we're in the area again and want Mexican food and a good margarita, I'd have no problem stopping back.

The homemade chips have a snapping fresh flavor, the specialty dips are served hot and well seasoned and your order of fajitas or enchiladas has all the flavors of an authentic dish with enough to take home. Ana -- my server -- watches the table to make sure everything is satisfactory. The peaceful environment is very relaxing as you chip and salsa away.

Taste of Africa - Goat dish

Taste of Africa

A place like Taste of Africa is exactly why I love Des Moines. This lovely restaurant is a bit hard…read moreto find, but much worth it. The space is small, and the menu is right by the cash register, so don't expect menus after you have sat down (at least that's my experience). There are fresh sambusas (beef filled savory fried pastries) for sale in the case by the cash register and I highly recommend getting an order of those. I got the chicken tandoori (it may have a different name but that's what the server called it) with rice and bottled water. Yum! The chicken was juicy and flavorful, and it comes with a TON of aromatic basmati rice, also cooked expertly - super light and fluffy. It also comes with a simple salad with lettuce and seasoned onions, which I wasn't crazy about. The hot sauce is addictive and it burns so good. Definitely make sure to get some but if you aren't too used to spicy food, handle with care. Prices are great, a lot of good food for not a lot of money. One thing to keep in mind about service is that it's not your typical mainstream service: if you need anything else after they take your order, you have to be proactive about it, which can be good or not so good depending on what you like.

I'm from Zimbabwe so when looking for a place to eat this restaurant popped up. Reviews looked good…read moreso we stopped in. They had 4 dishes which the waiter verbally told us about, no menus. The restaurant serves Ethiopian food. It's kind of in a not so good area. My friend and I ordered the goat dish with rice and salad. The food came out pretty quickly and we hot it with a fork and spoon. I asked for a knife, I heard the waiter washing one and handing it to me still dripping wet. The food was good, but ambiance can be better. The waited said they were remodel so I will give them the benefit of the doubt. I believe there are many Ethiopian truck drivers in the area and this is their go to place. When we walked in the group of Ethiopians sitting down(all guys) just stared at us, it was kind of unwelcoming Besides the food being flavourful and not bad, the place could use a little more organisation and professionalism.
