I've been on the hunt for some cheap supplies, specifically a pinback button machine as this is around $50-60 new online and since I'm using funds from the school club I'm in to buy it; this felt excessive. Unfortunately they didn't have this machine and apparently only have ones in stock like this once in a while as they tend to go fast. Not deterred, I kept exploring the rest of the shop. Price wise, this place is THE best craft store you can and should stop into before going elsewhere to see if they have supplies you could use. You name it; they have it or have had it in the past. Supply varies as they depend on donations but with some supplies I bought costing just a quarter, I truly cannot be mad. They had yarn, paper supplies, knitting supplies, beadwork items, sewing supplies including patterns and zippers and sewing feet, stationary and scrapbook/journaling supplies. MICA - Maryland Institute College of Art is a strong arts college that is often beneath the radar…read morefor many locals. But they have a strong multi-building enclave only a stone's throw from Pennsylvania Station, Baltimore. The MICA store is for the art students. Although stores like Utrecht carry some items, the MICA store has some unique items. The poster art for instance sold at the store features designs from the Globe Poster business which MICA purchased in 2010 when the Globe went out of business. In the pre-social media days when flyers advertised music acts, The Globe Press had clients like Tina Turner, James Grown, The Temptations, etc. who would call in orders. Some of that poster art lives on at the MICA Store. The store also carries some cool books and gifts that I have not seen at a Utrecht's. And of course, like any university, the MICA Store sells cool t-shirts, sweatshirts, stickers, and bags with Maryland Institute College of Art's distinct logo. The shop has been around for decades along with the owner including bearing the brunt of two floods. We purchased one bowl after the first flood recovery-it was found down river, a testament to durability, persistence and resurrection. They have moved steadily uphill since the first location (with colorful dresses hung outside as an aura-of-the-day) suffered so much with the flood.
