Amazing service. Our waitress was extremely sweet. Me and my husband really enjoyed the food. If we ever find ourselves in Escondido again will definitely come here. The gyoza is absolutely fantastic. It was perfectly cooked. The bottom was crispy. And the takoyaki was served at a perfect temperature. Now for the ramen. I ordered the tonkatsu and my husband ordered the spicy miso. Both broths were delicious. Tonkatsu is rich but slightly bland. They take our order and then leave, no problem, then a bit later they come back... "Oh actually, the lunch Menu ends at 2 so we can't serve you ANY of that" as if they've finally WON AGAINST THE CUSTOMER and gotten the upsell by mere MINUTES after 2PM... At which point we just give up order the same thing from the Full Price Menu. (Gee, what an ENJOYABLE EXPERIENCE for the diner to start their meal with...) I hope the FIVE DOLLARS UPSELL they made was worth the hassle and losing would-be returning customers. Nice new and inviting ambiance with half booth seating. It was more spacious inside than it looked from outside. The lanterns and the Japanese writing on the wall were a cliche decor but alright. The service was OK/good. It's a neighborhood ramen option to get a Japanese food fix in a pinch. They have udon, bowls, curry and other goodies. They only have one sushi roll on the menu. Shoyu ramen was not real shoyu soup, but rather tonkotsu-based shoyu flavored soup. The flavor was bland, and as a shoyu ramen fan, it was disappointing. BBQ Pork Bowl was good but a bit too salty and had a distinctive Chinese five spice flavor which I didn't care for. Pork Katsu Plate came with a heap of rice. Katsu was nice and crispy but thin and a little stiff. I am not used to eating Japanese food with long grain fluffy kind of rice. It's usually short grain sticky rice. I am a huge Ramen fan. I love these dishes, especially in the winter time and I really liked coming here because I had to have the fried chicken Ramen. I could've eaten 50 pounds of the fried chicken. It's done so well and the flavor is really good, but I chose to get the spicy miso base and Man was it delicious. I swear to God I could've eaten the stuff by the bucket. It is really comfortable seating in the parking is ample as a shared parking lot with a major grocery store so I have to give them credit. We found a cozy half booth and enjoyed the comfy spot as we took in the simple and pleasant decor. The place is clean, open and airy, not noisy. There were a few other patrons who appeared to be enjoying their meals. We were handed menus and perused the options. We ordered 2 waters, 1 sprite, the Spicy Miso Ramen (server said only served with pork and couldn't choose alternate protein) and the Fried Chicken Curry entree. Both were delicious, perfect temperature, spice level was excellent for myself and my kids who all enjoy a little kick but not too spicy, beautiful presentation. We asked for some side plates and extra utensils which they kindly provided. Napkins and chopsticks are provided on the table. We couldn't stop eating and I suspected they used MSG (to which I am allergic). I didn't have a reaction so they must not use it! That's great news. This spot has been on my list of places to visit since I saw that it opened recently. One rainy day, I finally found myself here. We were promptly greeted and seated after walking in the door. The server was super friendly. We ordered pan fried dumplings, chicken katsu curry, the salmon bowl, and I ordered the fried chicken ramen from their specials menu. The pan fried dumplings were just perfect! They were tender but with juuust enough of a crisp on one side. My dad loved the curry, and my son was happy with his salmon bowl, although he did hand off his broccoli. My fried chicken ramen had a spicy broth that was just the perfect amount of heat. I added seaweed pieces and bok choy. I wasn't expecting for the chicken to come on the side, but I'm glad they thought ahead for the diner, so the chicken wouldn't get soggy while waiting to be eaten! The chicken comes as big pieces of karaage (GREAT Japanese fried chicken)! Decided to try out Tengu tonight for takeout. My first impression is the restaurant is adorable, you can tell the owner put in a lot of work to make it look cool, and it does. Staff were happy and very polite with us. Checking out the menu they have a great lunch time special and the best menu ever. Every item has a clear photo. Great for indecisive people like me that look up Yelp to see photos of the food. We ordered the spicy miso and the Tengu Tonkatsu. The spicy miso was my favorite out of the two, but both were average in my opinion. The cooks are very inexperienced or they simply don't care! We ordered spring rolls to start, I had the Spicy Miso Ramen, and the hubby ordered a chicken rice bowl. The spicy miso came out first. I don't care two shakes of a rats tail that the chicken takes a while to cook. Plan the timing of the food appropriately! I'll wait for my soup, I will. Now I'm sitting here eating ice-cold ramen because I waited 25+ minutes for my husband's main course to come out, and diners should eat TOGETHER. The server gives all kinds of excuses about how the chicken on the rice bowl takes extra time to cook, at which point I say I don't care how long the chicken takes, because the kitchen should time all entrees to come out at the same time: not one entree come out first, then the actual starter come out second, and then the second entree comes out 25 minutes after the first entree! But she keeps arguing, and digging a deeper hole of lack of timing, knowledge of service flow, and actual professionalism.I WILL NEVER RETURN. and if you are savvy, you will take my experience and advice and eat elsewhere. We ordered for half the table first to make sure we get the orders in since we know it would take awhile for a big group. After 15-20 minutes the restaurant started filling up. 4-5 tables have ordered, gotten their food, and paid their bill and we were still sitting after 1.5 hours waiting for our food. When it's actually raining in San Diego county, the only place to go is to get it soup to warm rhe soul. I wanted to try somewhere new so we stopped into Tengu Ramen. The shop was a little slow as it was within an hour of closing by the time we got there and sat down to order. The staff was very friendly, and there are lots of options on the menu to satiate any appetite. We ordered the char siu ramen and beef udon noodle soup. Portions were decently sized, the udon broth was refreshing and clean, and the tonkatsu base was nice and creamy. The takoyaki was buried under a mountain of bonito flakes. Just left the restaurant less than an hour ago, and already wanted to come share how amazing it was! My husband and I got the fried chicken to start, and it was so good! Lightly battered and flavored perfectly, it went really well with the spicy dipping sauce it came with. I got the garlic bomb ramen, and it's officially my favorite ramen of North County! It's a spicy miso base, with a ton of freshly minced garlic.. amazing! You could smell the garlic as soon as the bowl is placed in front of you! The ramen was so flavorful and the chashu was tender. I also got the taro milk tea (not pictured), but they ran out of boba (it was a Saturday evening). That also hit the spot! My husband got the katsu curry rice plate, and he said it was amazing and we're definitely coming back for more. The drink I got the Boba was really gross and crumbly and it tasted like they used fake because it's melted right away and just tasted really artificial so I couldn't drink it. Edamame tasted mushy and honestly just not great flavor and the Ramen the meats was very good. It tasted like it didn't have much flavor and it kinda tasted like a prepackage. The eggs were cold and stinks and the tofu was cold I also got the eel bowl. It was actually good but it didn't have much sauce of the rice is dry but it was good. My daughter and I were stoked because we just went to their branch in Oceanside on Sun, Dec 29th and this branch just opened very recently. We went a week later on Sun, Jan 5th at lunchtime. We ordered the Tonkatsu Ramen again as we loved it and I tried the Eel Bowl. I'll review the Eel Bowl and I was very pleased. It's like a deconstructed Eel Roll and for the price, it was well worth it. This place is bigger than the Oceanside one. They could use more staff. Despite the servers being super super nice, it was spotty as they forgot a drink order and after a reminder they told us they didn't have it available. Ramen is okay. Karaage came out crisp, juicy, and hot. The spam musubi had preserved plum on it which was something new for me, not sure if that is a usual topping for spam musubi. Just tried Tengu Ramen for the first time via delivery, and went with their Salty Shoyu Ramen. Overall, it was a decent first experience, though not quite a knock-out. The broth was definitely salty compared to other ramen shops. It had a good depth of flavor, though I personally found it a tad too salty. The noodles were cooked well, and the toppings were fresh and as expected. Nothing particularly stood out as amazing, but nothing was bad either. It was a solid bowl of ramen. For a first try, it was okay. I'm intrigued enough to explore the rest of their menu. I'll definitely be back to try some of their other ramen options and perhaps some appetizers. We had to remind her about our add ones and they arrived cold. The chili oil and sesame seeds on the table were a good touch but the ramen was not as flavorful as I was hoping. I loved the fact that they separated the broth from the toppings so you could add them as I chose. The broth was amazing with a rich depth of flavor.
