You must be a shofar because you blew your chance with us…read more When we moved to SCV 3 years ago we thought it would be nice to try and find other Jews in our community since we were told there were a bunch even though we couldn't find any on our own. We went about this by contacting Beth Shalom. Several times. The synagogue said that they had recently gone from a dues paying institution to a free place of community and worship. This was very much of interest to us. Each time we reached out the only person we could get in touch with which was Robin. Each time we were basically told that they couldn't just tell us if there were young couples like us in their community. Finally Robin suggested we come to a big Purim event at a park. Because parking was so insane we had to park 15 min away then when we arrived it was $30 to get in. Luckily we found a space to go through since we were only coming to meet Robin since she said she would introduce us to younger members like us. When we finally found her she said there was no one for us to meet so all of that was for nothing. Soon after a fun sounding Gatsby-type event was posted. This event was $50 per person so of course we didn't want to waste $100 unless they could assure us of how many young couples were going. We went back and forth trying to get this information from her but she insisted we would have to come and see for ourselves. When we told our family back in Chicago they were in complete disbelief at how these fellow Jews would treat us. They insisted we keep trying. How many times are you supposed to try? We later found out from people around SCV that it is well know that this synagogue thinks of itself like an exclusive country club and it's not surprising that we were treated this was. This experience was shameful. We never met other Jews in the area.
