I discovered a woman with a myriad of enviable attributes, including her passion for Judaism. Rabbi Hoffman knew she would find her life's work in a synagogue as a youngster and honed her skills at religious school Jewish camp and as a Judaic Studies student at UC San Diego. She loves teaching and believes in positive psychology to help children have a good sense of self and has implemented a "gratitude attitude" into curriculums she has created. She is adept at teaching both children and adults, and has served as a teacher at the Melton School of Adult Learning, as well as Jewish day schools. In the first weeks of her tenure at TAS, I have observed her warmth and her eagerness to meet with various temple groups--from past presidents to auxiliaries to the ECEC parents. In the most difficult of times, she has already become a positive force and graces our bema with her intellect, her reflections and a maturity beyond her years. She also has family and friends here that attend this location. I was happy to break bread and pray with the congregation. I am studying the Hebrew language now, and I eventually will be learning to pray and sing the Bibilical Torah scripts. The people were nice and welcoming here as well as all of the others I have visited. Its just nice to know that I will soon be fully part of the community, and that I can attend any Synagogs around the world.

Rabbi Paul, Cantor Doug and Hebrew Tutor Diane were more incredible than you can imagine! We received so many compliments from our guests how special the service was and warm and inspiring. They all make it all about the celebration of the the Bat/Bar Mitzvah! The staff is so helpful and friendly when planning the service and I had the lunch in the lobby after the service. Services are always different - from traditional Friday night Shabbat to hiking or meditation Shabbat (and more!). Or Ami is a super warm community and it is very easy to get involved. There really is something for everyone. My kids / teens adore the programs and are very active. Yes, the preschool had some issues that were quickly resolved, which is what a responsible Temple board does. This is a wonderful, understanding and helpful Temple. The Rabbi is THE BEST! Y'all are probably going to come at me for this review, but here it goes…read more As a young adult in my late 20s, I came to this temple hoping to find a Jewish community and connect with people around my age. Unfortunately, that has been extremely difficult. From my experience, the congregation is overwhelmingly made up of people over 50, and there seems to be very few opportunities for people in their 20s and 30s to meet one another and build community. Some members have been welcoming and acknowledged me, while others have made me feel out of place. I even spoke with the rabbi about wanting to meet his daughter (who didn't have a desire to meet me whatsoever and did not acknowledge me at a Hillel event) and other people around my age because I genuinely wanted to develop friendships and become part of a Jewish community. Unfortunately, I never felt that my desire to make those connections was really acknowledged or facilitated. I don't think wanting to meet other young Jewish adults is an unreasonable expectation when you're actively trying to become involved in a congregation. I do want to give credit where it's due. The services are good, the rabbi has always been respectful towards me, and the rabbi has consistently been willing to answer any questions I've had. My criticism isn't really about the religious services themselves. At the end of the day though, one of my biggest reasons for joining a temple was to build community. I simply haven't been able to find that here with people in my age group. If you're in your 20s or 30s and are specifically looking for a congregation with a strong young-adult community, that is something I would keep in mind.

I have the same feeling especially when Jewish Holidays are observed. I was married to a Jewish man for 20 years, over 20 years ago. After the divorce I never changed my Jewish last name so when I show up African American, it's usually a surprise. (lol) I do miss celebrating on the high holidays. My daughter married a Jewish man who is so wonderful. They live in Hancock Park and attend at a Synagogue nearby so they have no trouble getting to Temple and they have many Jewish friends. I do observe holidays sometimes with them.
