Reform Synagogue in Bakersfield, CA dedicated to the creation of a home for living Judaism--a place where newcomers feel welcome, where Jewish ideals are made real and where education is the key that unlocks the door to a lifetime of Jewish fulfillment and commitment.

History

Established in 1947.

For 70 years, Temple Beth El has been Bakersfield's Reform synagogue. In 1947, thirty-five families gathered at the old American Legion Hall on 17th Street to talk about initiating Temple Beth El. First temple officers were elected and, on July 16, 1947, at the First Congregational Church on 18th and G Streets, in the presence of visiting Rabbis Alfred Wolf, Leonard Greenberg, Joseph Jason, and Morton Bauman, our very first Sabbath service took place.
