For context, I've been using a well-known plumbing/HVAC company in East Brunswick call Rick's since 2022. They have some solid technicians, but as an engineer, I value clear diagnostics and honest recommendations--especially since I understand the system myself. This year, I noticed high pressure in my old-school baseboard heater boiler. The expansion tank felt full, and since these typically need replacing every 6-8 years, I assumed that was the issue. The company sent out a tech who, without testing or even touching anything, quoted me $1,175 to replace the expansion tank, the relief valve, and the pressure release valve--all of which had already been replaced last year. When I asked why they needed replacing again, he couldn't explain and told me there was no warranty on the parts which i didn't ask for. I just wanted to know the reason, but he had no answer. Also the was he was communicating and responding to my question... Huge red flag...I passed. Enter Chris. I called him on a Friday, and even though he was fully booked, he offered to come by the next morning--on his day off--because he understood the urgency. He spent over an hour carefully inspecting the system and ultimately fixed the issue without replacing a single part. He did recommend upgrading to a larger expansion tank in the future, which made sense, so I asked him to go ahead and do it. Since we had to drain the system anyway, I also had him replace the relief valve, just to be safe. And here's the kicker: he charged under $400 total for parts and labor across two visits. I even told him to charge more and handed him my card he wouldn't take it. Seriously, wow. Beyond that, Chris has a mechanical engineering background and tons of hands-on experience. He listens, explains everything clearly, and only recommends what's actually needed. He also showed great respect for the space wore booties without being asked, cleaned up after himself, and left everything spotless. Great job, Chris, and best of luck! Also, technology has moved on as well, so it's virtually impossible to replace "just the condenser" without all the additional furnace components...they simply won't work together. We called several HVAC contractors...one of them being the large energy company we all know in this area. They came in and did their inspection and were very professional. But their price was 50% higher than the local competition. Yes you read that right!! I wasn't concerned about the "big guys" doing it right, since they are our current utility firm and we have appliance contracts through them. But in light of these tough economic times, I really wanted to give it to a small business. I just wasn't sure how well they would stand behind their work and whether they would do it right the first time. I did research and found two other options. The one that really stood out was AAA Comfort Air in Cream Ridge, NJ. They had over 95 five-star reviews, and although anyone can fake a review, I still felt compelled to do my due diligence. I set an appointment for Emil (the owner) to come in and assess the situation. He was professional, took his shoes off before entering (not at our request), and clearly laid out what was needed and NOT what was most expensive. As a matter of fact, he recommended options that were less expensive vs. those that would simply feed his wallet without added benefit to us. His demeanor was polite, knowledgeable, and he took the time (over 1-hour) to really explain everything without pushing for the sale. Additionally, there are some unique challenges in our home that require minimal dust due to some family health issues and he offered to put up plastic to separate the rooms to ensure a clean work environment. Well, much to my surprise, Emil, came back with an estimate that was truly outstanding vs. simply "competitive". Likewise, his firm provides a 3-year parts and labor warranty (not an option...he just provides it) along with the condenser manufacturer's 10-year. The others only offered 1-year.... that in of itself really resonated with me! We decided to move forward, and I have to say, we made the right decision. Emil and his team were outstanding. They arrived on time, ready to go, and their work was outstanding. Everything was done in one day, with a clean install and a fully working system. Look, HVAC replacement won't make your home look nicer, but it surely is important. No one wants to spend that kind of money unless they have to. Emil and his team were not only very competitive, but they delivered on their promises and were very customer focused. If you are seriously considering a project like this, you need to consider AAA Comfort air. They deliver on their promises and care about their customers. They go above and beyond and deliver with an eye towards balancing price with efficiency. We highly recommend them and you should absolutely include them in your decision-making process.
