2nd bed in room
Christa T.

This place is a NIGHTMARE! My mom was brought here for knee rehab after her insurance (Aetna Advantage is the worst apparently) denied her return to the previous facility she was at before being rushed to an ER and a second hospital for care of post surgical knee concerns. Upon arrival the transport person single handedly slung her onto a bed using only the blanket she was laying on and abruptly landed her on the bed on top of the covers and fully tangled up in the sheets and blankets from transport. This for an 82 yr old woman with a leg brace and kneecap that was shattered and put back together. The place was dirty and tv had some white substance smeared across it and the bed was up against a wall with a tv and bright yellow surge protector zip tied to a wall. Initial nurses came in and had not even looked at her paperwork yet but did help untangle her from the bedding and got her into bed properly. They had to go through 3 blood pressure devices due to lack of charge. Overnight she was told to go to the bathroom in her bed cause no one was around to help with a bed pan. They said 'the men just use urinals' as of that helped her. Upon arrival to see her she was just finishing a rehab therapist assessment and did get a basic breakfast at 7 am. No other staff came to the room for over 3 hours while I visited except to deliver a disgusting plate of food she could not even force down. When I asked about her medications the nurse said she had looked for my mom multiple times in the morning but she wasn't in her room. My mom could not and did not leave her bed or that room even once since arrival. Then upon review of her meds they had substituted one RX due to price without even advising her and the nurse told us there were no nightly meds. I asked for a detailed review of her meds and then the nurse acknowledged she has at least 3 meds ordered for twice a day. So she said we'll just give them to her after 9pm tonight. Then said she'd bring her meds right away since we confirmed she was in the room. After 15 minutes I went to find the nurse gossiping with a coworker and when she saw me she said she'd be there in 2 minutes...over 5 minutes later she showed up and gave her meds. Then after arguments over a feminine urinal to allow mom to relieve herself when they cannot come and help...they returned to say they were all already in use and not available. So finally they brought a bedpan for her to use. I called the numbers for the director of nursing to see if we could get some help with the nurse's failure to provide medication and care and no one answered or called me back. We asked about a bed rail to help mom turn herself for bedpan needs the rehab therapist came into the room and said sharply 'we have a mobility issue here?' With attitude. She said they rarely give bedrails and she will just have to suffer over the weekend until Monday when they can start therapy to get her to stand on one leg, pivot and sit on a toilet chair or wheelchair to move forward. This place is the worst care, environment and bedside manner I've ever seen!!! I asked to speak to a manager, supervisor and case manager and was told I can call them but it's their day off and Monday would be th earliest. I accept transfer my mom elsewhere until a case manager arranges it. What a freaking circus and lack of humanity this place exhibits. And yes I blame Aetna but also want to state that this place was rated 4 stars on the list the hospital used to find her a facility to complete her care. Such bullish*t and insurance screw around for our elderly. I will be sure to share this feedback as wide as I can to make sure everyone knows about this place. Don't disregard bad reviews as I was told by the hospital social worker. Ignore the hood ones cause I'd probably not be on here if they were testing her with any amount of decency or care.

She was sure that this was the end of "life as she knew it", and wanted us to start looking into an assisted living facility. She was quite depressed due to her weakness and inability to get out of the house. As this was her first time requiring in home care, she was a bit leery of letting "strangers" in her home as she has always been so independent. After her first visit, she immediately called us and reported how kind and wonderful the nurse was. What a relief! He was very thorough, took time explaining her new medications, and assured her that she would be back to playing Bingo soon. She had hope, and was overjoyed! The therapist came a few days later, and she was again... impressed on how gentle he was, while still giving her a workout! Sure enough, after a few weeks of coordinated care, she was feeling confident enough to get out and about, and was back to playing with her bingo buddies. We will definitely use Palmeira in the future if needed. It's not every day that you find a cohesive care team that puts the patient's needs over the insurance company's desires.

It was the second day it opened...a little over three years ago. From my apartment on the 10th floor I look east across the beautiful campus and see the McDowell Mountains and the rising sun each morning, as well as students scurrying, riding skateboards, and hurrying to class. Residents are also able to take classes tuition free and participate in many campus activities. It's an easy walk to the football and basketball facilities, and my favorite, baseball, is just four miles away. The Gammage Performance Center is an easy walk, as well as the many shops downtown. For transportation we have light rail that goes all over the Valley, just a short ride to see the Arizona Diamondbacks, the Phoenix Suns, or the Phoenix Symphony! Similar facilities are remotely located...go out the gate and see desert or a residential neighborhood. We have shops, groceries, a drug store, entertainment, and a movie theater! My one-bedroom apartment is spacious and comfortable with maintenance and cleaning included. Our computer/TV guy Trevor is one of the top five reasons to live here...get a new printer...he will make it work in no time!! Our maintenance people are prompt and pleasant for issues with appliances or repair of anything that comes up or to assist in special projects. We also have three restaurants serving a variety of new items as well as old favorites. Many ASU students work in the restaurants and our underground parking garage. None of us get into a hot car because it's all underground! Valets provide airport service and also drive those without with a car for appointments within a reasonable distance! Residents are also kept busy going all over the Valley in 15-passenger buses to varied locations. Many events and speakers are offered; it's sometimes impossible to do it all. One floor is designated as Assisted Living and another for Memory Care. So if you are thinking about moving from the big house that's heavy maintenance, don't wait until you have a fall or accident. Come here, meet new people, and join in the activities. If you have grown children, it's a great gift for us to all downsize and know there are people nearby to help as we grow older and less able to handle the burden of home ownership or living alone. This unit temp is centrally controlled at the nursing station. The ac vent for my cubicle was directly above my bed. I was admitted with pneumonia and sepsis. Cold air pouring down on my chest and very arthretic joints caused me unrelieved pain all night. I had on a hoodie and a fleece robe over my hospital gown. Staff brought heated thin blankets. They offered brief relief until they cooled down. I complained bitterly all night about the cold. I had the covers pulled up over my nose because even my nose was freezing! When day shift arrived the caregiver told me "I felt bad for you after I got home because you were so cold." She helped me go outside to get warm in the morning AZ sun. Getting warm eased my joint pain considerably. Coming in someone from day shift said to us, "the thermostat is right here. I'll turn it up". I'm sure the night shift considered me a problem patient because I complained bitterly all night about freezing and the cold increasing my arthritis pain. Why they would put up with a complaining cranky patient rather than turn the ac to 70 is beyond me. The nurse told me "we have 20 beds and only 2 bath rooms." They wanted me to use a bedside commode. I am old but ambulate at a quick pace with walker. The only relief I had from my ice box cubicle was walking to the bathroom. For safety they accompanied me. Staff let me know it was a major inconvenience to walk with me to the bathroom. Patients, especially elderly folks, can develop blood clots from not getting. Their convenience and comfort were more important than patients welfare! I have been a patient at Dignity Mercy. I have nothing but good to say about that experience. I was also a patient at This hospital Dignity Chandler for 5 days in June with pneumonia and sepsis. No complaints only praise. Because of this horrible freezing experience and judgemental uncaring night staff in the observation area. I will do everything I can to never come here again. Marlene Hickman
