As a student photographer formerly from an urban area, with a passion for film, Tempe Camera was an absolute treasure trove, upon my move to Arizona for school. They have the widest range of film I've seen at any local store, with the processing center conveniently located next door, a well stocked sales floor, as well as rental and repair departments, which has led me to become a frequent customer as opposed to ordering my supplies from B&H online. After my first visit this would continue to be a raving review of an awesome local business, but I've learned the sad reality. All of the above attributes are reasons why the *consistent* arrogance and disinterested behavior on apart of the Sales/Rental staff is absolutely astounding to me. After reading the reviews here, unfortunately I see that this isn't just a series of bad personal experiences, but rather a general way in which this business is run. The most insulting part of this behavior, is that it only applies towards "certain" business , as I've witnessed an entirely different attitude towards the more "seasoned" photographer or one of the handful of frequent customers that they've deemed "deep-pocketed" enough to get to know. Subsequently, if you decide to spend your money there, despite this treatment, don't bother asking for advice on said purchase, because a used car salesman is more likely to give you a genuine response. I spent 10 minutes at the rental counter after dropping a lens off for repair, seeking suggestions about lenses I have not used, and the salesperson acted as though he'd rather attend a root canal, than recommend a lens I would have been interested in renting had he given me the confidence that it was right for my shoot or offered alternatives. Instead, he saw his efforts better served to scoff under his breath and roll his eyes at my lack of knowledge, as well as to let me know they required a deposit, in a tone that already assumed I couldn't afford it. Student discounts are given to customers, but again, only the ones they deem worthy. (ASU only). If you're lucky, you'll speak with the ONE helpful gentleman who tells you to "say you go to ASU", so other students can benefit from it. This exclusion of the *multiple* other educational institutions offering photography/art degrees, is just downright negligent to the field (not to mention insulting), as students are the next generation of professionals. Even if you are an ASU student or were given the opportunity to "just say you are", only about 5% of those new purchases actually make the "discount list", they have programmed their computer system to honor. On multiple occasions I have inquired at the point of sale as to what the discount percentage is or why the majority of these purchases aren't discounted, they consistently make a vague remark about the computer system, instead of enumerating the policy or the specific percentage discounted, so you know which items specifically will be applicable in the future.
I strongly urge this potentially wonderful company to take a sincere look into the day-to-day sales interactions that occur on behalf of their business and invest some much needed training time, even if just to tell your middle aged employees not to behave like spoiled children. Even if your only concern is truly your profit, you are wasting a significant portion of that on these employees that only discourage business. No one seeking advice that plans to spend their money with you, should ever leave empty handed and feeling an inch tall, purely because of pretentiousness on the part of employees. In the meantime, I highly recommend saving money and supporting B&H, who have treated me with more personal care and respect in online interactions than these people have face to face. read more
