If I could give zero stars, I would. I called the Tempe location on Friday and spoke with Dave about selling my fairly new Sony DSLR camera and Tamron lens . Dave told me he would be very interested in purchasing both items. I explained that I would be driving in from the Tucson area on Tuesday, and he said he looked forward to meeting me. On Tuesday, July 21, 2026, I drove an hour and a half to the Tempe location. After standing around for about five minutes, I noticed the sign directing customers to the sales counter. I approached the employee working around 11:00 a.m. and explained that I had brought in my camera and lens to see whether the store would be interested in purchasing them. Without properly examining either item, he responded very unprofessionally: "Nope, too old," and, "Nope, we already have one. You should have called, and I would have told you that." I had called. I specifically spoke with Dave before making the trip and was told the store was very interested. The employee then told me to contact another camera shop or go to Samy's, and that was the end of the interaction. I was inside the store for less than five minutes. This experience wasted my time, gas, money, and resources. I drove three hours round trip based on information provided directly by an employee at this store. I will never recommend this business, and I will not return. The sad part is that I was genuinely excited to visit and had planned to purchase another used camera while I was there. Instead, the store lost both a potential seller and a paying customer because of its poor communication and dismissive customer service. read more

I learned about Tempe Camera years back when I was taking a black and white film photography class at Chandler-Gilbert Community College. We had to purchase film and photo paper from this store. Coming here began my journey of collecting camera accessories and studio equipment. I still pop in when I can to look for things like a carrying bag or a tripod for my cameras. Tempe Camera was founded by Joseph Wojcich in 1972. They operate out of a two-story building on University Drive. Tempe Camera offers up to a 30 day warranty on most goods. There are technicians present to answer any questions that you may have about camera products or if you are having any difficulties with your equipment. I'm incredibly disappointed with my experience. Before sending someone all the way across town to Tempe Camera, I specifically called ahead, clearly stated that I had a Mamiya 645 medium format camera, and asked whether they could service or at minimum clean and inspect it. Based on that conversation, I was under the impression that bringing it in would not be an issue. After making arrangements and sending someone out of their way during an already busy day, we were then told in person that they do not work on these cameras at all. This was a complete waste of time, gas, and energy--something that could have easily been avoided with accurate communication from the start. Vintage and film camera owners often rely heavily on clear information before transporting expensive equipment, especially larger medium format systems. I understand not every shop services every model, but the real issue here was the lack of proper communication and the inconvenience it caused. Had I been told accurately on the phone, I would have pursued another option immediately. For a business with a longstanding reputation in camera repair, I expected far better clarity and professionalism. Instead of respecting the exchange, a staff member stepped in and "politely" scolded me to stop speaking--as if my knowledge and perspective were a threat to their sale. That wasn't just an isolated insult; it reflected a pattern I've felt for some time: Tempe Camera treats loyal, knowledgeable customers less like friends of the community and more like obstacles. For the record, I've never returned a single purchase here. I've supported them faithfully, and I have influence in Southwest photography circles. To be silenced for sharing honest, experience-based advice crosses a line. A shop that polices conversations between customers is no longer fostering community--it's protecting sales at the expense of trust. If you're a serious photographer in Arizona, consider your options. Foto Forum in Phoenix offers a more professional atmosphere (in my opinion), and Monument Camera in Tucson has earned a reputation for welcoming and respecting customers. This is now my go-to camera store in Phoenix. Tempe Camera has a great selection of digital and film cameras and enough lenses to pay for a mansion. The business also carries a variety of tools to make your photography even better. Things like gimbals and tripods are effective tools you can find here. Tempe Camera also appears to film development and even runs classes so people can learn about cameras. I was super pumped to hear about the class. I went in with the intention of buying one of two cameras. I talked to an expert and he broke down what made sense for my budget. While I did chose the more expensive camera, I got the sense he was being genuine and really trying to help me find the best camera for my work. He very kindly let me see the cameras and hold them out of the box. He then let me look at the lenses I wanted. Overall, the shopping and buying process was awesome and very friendly. Tempe Camera is the absolute best. This place is a two-story wonderland of all of your photography needs. If you need something related to photography, they have it somewhere amongst their vast selection. I have used Tempe Camera on two different occasions for film camera repair. My pair of embattled Minolta x-370s have very much appreciated the TLC provided by the repair team at Tempe Camera. I find their repair costs to be very reasonable, especially since the service they are providing is nearly impossible to find elsewhere. I have also purchased many rolls of film and Polaroid film packs here. Their pricing is fair and it's convenient to just pop by and pick up film, as opposed to ordering from an online retailer and playing a waiting game for snail mail. I came into this store so worried because i dropped my new camera and messed up the lens to where it wouldn't retract or even turn on without an error code. I was ready to leave my camera there for days and pay a big fee for my mistake. I walk in and this lovely woman greets me and guides me to the repair man. Within like one minute he immediately fixes my camera and tells me I'm set. He didn't charge me. I insisted on having him charge me because he saved me!! The product was good and I save one a used item. However, Inconsistent return policy/restocking fee resulted in a greater to loss than should have. Salesman was rude when I asked about why the difference and he all but threatened to raise the restocking fee. I went to Tempe Camera for a software update to get told that the service department didn't have anybody capable of doing the upgrade. The only gentleman that could was in the rental department and not supposed to do repairs and was at lunch. Stephanie, the manager has no ability to be able to do upgrades or service. She stated she didn't have cables or abilities to login on the computer. Not sure how this qualified you as a manager. I went to the sales department to see if they could help and they don't have the ability. The sales team was completely embarrassed of the fact that their return customer could not be helped. If you live here in the valley and you're a photographer, there are only a few places to really go and this one here has been one of the founding photography stores within the valley The key thing that brings me back is the rental repair department located on the first floor or you can head upstairs to the second floor to go through and look up products. It's a challenging market these days with online retailers selling products that are more competitive towards most "brick and mortar" stores. If you're one of those people that love getting your hands on equipment talking to someone & getting information, then Tempe Camera is one of the few places in the valley with an extensive amount of equipment on hand. Rental prices are pretty competitive compared to online but it's nice to be able to call them and determine what they physically have available. Lately, I rented the Canon 400 mm lens for some sporting events that I partner with and it worked out as I needed it within 2 days. read more

I went to buy a NP-FW50 Sony Battery that cost 22.99 on eBay, Amazon, Best Buy etc. At their store it was 86.47!!! I needed it because I was leaving the state and needed the battery ASAP, so couldn't wait for shipping. Their cameras, lenses, lights, and tripods are all OVERPRICED! Also their classes teach the bare minimum lessons. Better to get your equipment off eBay, or Amazon, and you can find WAY better lessons and tutorials on DSLR cameras on YouTube. Customer service is subpar and they always try to get you to pay more than you need to. In terms of Rentals, and purchasing Equipment...take your money elsewhere!!!! read more

I recently passed on my old Nikon D50 to my 14 year old who was interested in pursuing a hobby in photography. It worked for a short bit, but then started having issues. I tasked him with finding a shop that would do repairs so we could get him up and running. He called a few stores before he stumbled on Tempe Camera. He initially called to see if they did repairs so that we could take his "new" camera in to have it looked at. I came in this morning to ask for a lens to be cleaned and the guy, without letting me finish speaking or actually looking at my lens made the educated declaration that anything on my lens would not be seen on my photos and completely dismissed me as a moron who doesn't know what she sees interrupting me numerous times as I tried to tell him the problem. The area of dust is in fact on my lens and it is in fact visible in photos and it is verified not to be on my sensor. I am so completely dismayed by how I was treated. Recently purchased a New Canon Eos R6 from here. I had never been to the location before, but they had a great selection of cameras. I was debating between this and the 5D Mk IV of which they had a large inventory of used cameras as well. They let me throw a lens on both cameras and kind of compare them a bit before hand. They also let me know if you rent a lens and then decide to go buy it, they take the price of the rental out of the cost of the lens when you purchase. I thought that was kinda cool. read more

Tempe Camera discriminated against me and my friends. We were trying to rent a camera from them. We showed them multiple IDs (AZ license and passport), we had money on our cards to pay for the whole camera if they needed & we were still told the cards were "suspicious". It was so disheartening that they were not even trying to work with us. They saw us and clearly discriminated against us. The manager came out and told me "I'm the manager, you have to talk to me!" It felt as though there was a wall and they had already decided they did not want to rent us this camera. I was an art major at ASU & I used to go to Tempe camera a lot to buy rolls of film and film paper. This is my first time renting equipment and I feel completely discriminated against.
