Recently purchased a New Canon Eos R6 from here. I had never been to the location before, but they had a great selection of cameras. I was debating between this and the 5D Mk IV of which they had a large inventory of used cameras as well. They let me throw a lens on both cameras and kind of compare them a bit before hand. They also let me know if you rent a lens and then decide to go buy it, they take the price of the rental out of the cost of the lens when you purchase. I thought that was kinda cool. read more

Tempe Camera discriminated against me and my friends. We were trying to rent a camera from them. We showed them multiple IDs (AZ license and passport), we had money on our cards to pay for the whole camera if they needed & we were still told the cards were "suspicious". It was so disheartening that they were not even trying to work with us. They saw us and clearly discriminated against us. The manager came out and told me "I'm the manager, you have to talk to me!" It felt as though there was a wall and they had already decided they did not want to rent us this camera. I was an art major at ASU & I used to go to Tempe camera a lot to buy rolls of film and film paper. This is my first time renting equipment and I feel completely discriminated against. This place is like the Walmart of all things photography and videography! Earlier this year, I helped my buddy on a project where he had to set-up a Kickstarter video for his client. Since he's a photographer by profession, he was lacking in some audio equipment and tada... Enter Tempe Camera! This place is a two-story Wonderland for photographers and videographers alike! As I said, they have equipment rental and a repair area. They also have all the knick-knacks and do-hickeys you could ever need! I'm talking lenses, camera bags, tripods, selfie sticks, lighting, batteries, and other stuff I don't even understand. They never tried to upsell and were very informative about all our questions on what equipment would be better for our project. This place does terrible work, and they treat their customers like thiefs. I needed to have some stuff re-scanned after they left pube hair marks smack in the middle of my face on 120 film scans from my sister's wedding. They acted like I was trying to get the stuff re-scanned for free. Why would anyone want that if the first scan was good to begin with? Then they accused me of losing the CD and coming back to get a free CD from them. Terrible service and extremely unfriendly. Stay away. Was thinking about getting a used Leica from them with warranty but after seeing how they treat people, forget it. I'll forget they exist. It will be better. And their prices are extremely high. I have been a long time customer until January 9th 2020 I am all for supporting local business even if it means paying more, however this place sure knows how to lose a loyal customer. I had a lens on hold and showed up 10 minutes before closing. I waited to pick it up from another associate at the store that had it on hold for me . At 5 o'clock I was told that I could not be helped, I explained that I was waiting on the lens. Dave said " it doesn't matter we are closed ". Found the same lens on B&H for $300 less. The main reason this place is in business is the fact they're the only place in town. I have spent close to $30k at the store the past year. this is no way to treat customers. Came in to get a lens repaired in a hurry and they got it done in record time at a reasonable price. The repair personnel were nice and professional. I went in as a former photography enthusiast who had been inactive over 10 years but was looking to hobby again. I used to have a Nikkormat. The young lady helping me sold me a Fuji camera around $2,000 with a couple of accessories. I asked about classes to get back in the swing of things and paid $85 for a class. Upon arriving at the full class.... I was the only one with a Fuji. The instructor... if he knew anything about Fuji ..... he couldn't even turn it on. So the entire class was useless. The pictures he showed looked like a lot of work was done in the developing and editing. I feel scammed. Gave my camera to my daughter. Big disappointment. One of the worst camera experiences I have ever experienced. I was so happy that they had a lens I could rent for my Sony camera, so I rented it for a week. Unfortunately a screw had come out of the lens before shooting and I was unable to shoot the remainder of my time. This means I could not use the lens (I don't think Tempe Camera understands that). Since this happened, I returned the lens 3 days early and let Tempe Camera know about the issues that had occurred. The next day they called and told me I was 100% responsible for the repair... Then, I asked about a deduct for returning the camera early to help compensate for the repair, and they told me they would not do it. I will say it again, worst camera lens experience of my life. Learn to understand that I did not put the lens on my camera incorrectly, I have been photographing for 10+ years. This is a defect in the camera lens. I was going to buy this lens plus another 85mm from them - also a bag and a tripod, but now I will not return to this store. Seems like most of the recent reviews are completely negative and people will not return. This is very unfortunate for Tempe Camera. read more

Absolutely the best place to go for any camera needs. The owner and the staff are incredible to work with! I stop in there regularly as I'm a wedding photographer and prefer to rent my equipment while I save for the next big purchase! Total fail on customer service. I went in to purchase some enlarging paper for my photography class. The gent behind the counter, after taking a good hard look at me over his glasses, just could not be bothered to ring up my purchase. He did so begrudgingly, but did everything he could to delay and slow down the process. At one point he stopped to have a nice chat with another employee behind the counter. If there was something he could do to delay the checkout he did it. It is hard to verbalize how frustrating this purchase was. I will gladly pay more to order from B&H or Freestyle from now on. read more

One employee saved this from being a 2 star review. I came in today looking for class information but more importantly I am in the market for a new camera. I went upstairs to the sales office. The person who helped me was atrociously rude and inconsiderate. He really made me feel, 1 I didn't belong here, and 2, I was wasting his time. I only took up two minutes of his time, but acted so put out. I started waking downstairs feeling deflated and embarrassed because I didn't know what to ask when shopping for a camera. Basically I dont know what I dont know. Which is why I was there. I get downstairs and right before I leave I am cheerfully greeted by another gentleman (medium build blond guy) who took the time to not only answer questions, but offered suggestions on what I could do with regards to finding that perfect camera. He mentioned rentals, had no idea that was an option! We talked about classes I could take and what we could do moving forward with getting a camera. The rude guy came down when we were talking about class dates, the other guy asked to confirm the dates and the d-bag, with his back against us walking away mumble something as though he couldn't be bothered. I want this business to know I have the money to buy a camera, I would really like to buy from a local retailer, however If Im going to be treated like crap, Ill gladly buy online or go to Wilsons Camera on Camelback. I received phenomenal service at Tempe in the renting, purchasing, and repair departments. The staff is very knowledgeable and experienced with all of their products and helped me make an informed decision on my new DSLR purchase. The lady that helped me, made recommendations for cameras based on my experience level and needs, and did not pressure me to purchase the most expensive, top of the line models with features that I would not be using. A week after my purchase, I found my new 16-80mm lens to have a manufacturer's defect that required me to send my lens in to Nikon for warranty repair--Nikon policy did not allow Tempe to just exchange my lens with a new one at the store. I was so upset that I wouldn't have my lens right before my 10 day vacation, and even though it was not Tempe Camera's nor my fault that the lens was defective, Tempe Camera let me borrow one of their rental lenses for my 10-day trip. This is truly incredible customer service. The lens I borrowed was in very good condition, I would rent from them again! Also, the repair department was great at updating me on the status of the lens repair--they called me as soon as they found out that my lens would be repaired free of charge. Tempe Camera has a very trustworthy group of staff members. I have to drive about an hour to this shop, but I don't mind the drive because the service I receive is 100% worth it! This Wednesday I brought in a frame I'd bought second hand for a gift. It was a very simple fix. They gave me their assurances it could be fixed by Saturday. This was important to me, since it was a wedding gift for my best friend who is moving to NY on Sunday. I called Saturday morning to find the frame hadn't been done. I said, "okay, just give it back T me as I'll fix it myself." But the photo center was closed, and the one guy working the shop wasn't able/willing to walk across the street to get There was no offer to give me the frame for free, or pay shipping to New York, which I will now be paying myself. Tempe Camera is an all you need camera repair shop, store and rental place which I have used many times. I have purchased tripods, mounts and bags from this store in the past as well as having my 5d repaired recently. I love coming here and nosing around the equipment and just chatting to the friendly staff. The 5d was repaired when they said it would be and didn't take advantage. They actually held the camera for me for quite a while too. I really only have one complaint that it's never a quick stop. I always seem to be waiting to speak to someone there whether it is upstairs or downstairs. The staff are great but maybe acknowledge a customer who isn't being seen. Most customers are coming in with technical questions etc and I understand that but just a little acknowledgment would be great as it also let's the customer with the current query know that there is someone waiting. read more

Sometimes you see people's true colors when problems arise. I attempted to rent a nikon lens from Tempe Camera. Through a series of errors never got the proper lens. I used to go here when the staff were knowledgeable, nice, and the prices were just. I usually rent lenses here and get my gear here however in the past year they have slipped into what I call Wal-Martism where they are the only heavy weights around and must bow down. Came here to rent a few lenses: a 14mm canon L(they only had the mark 1) and rented as if it were a brand new just lens of the mark ii. When asked if they will ever upgrade their rental equipment they said "No, we do not give into them just upgrading the lens just so they can sell at a higher price" This is false, I am no expert but the quality and technology called for the upgrade and it was a completely different lens, they felt the same about the 70-200mm. SHAME SHAME...its like comparing a point and shoot to a DSLR. 2nd complaint...On the lens rental that was not upgraded I asked how much to rent for 1 week for a TSE 17mm, on the phone they said $150...wait a minute...website says $135...lady came and said...oh sorry, we need to update our website. I asked for honor and she said no. 3rd. They are way over priced. Look and you will see that compared to other retailers that they are 20% marked up...its like shopping at Bestbuy... Understanding that they been around here along time and probably developed a strong fan base that they will attack me for this review, but lets look at them as a business and not a personal friend. They want money...you got money...enough said. Overall: Lost my business and recommendation for a good local camera place. Last place to ever shop locally and time to take my dollars online. This is for the film lab they are with next door. Not in the actual Tempe Camera building, but next door. First off, found them quite rude. I had called earlier in the day and discussed film developing and pricing, I told that to the woman working the front desk and she goes 'you called aaaaaanndddd....' in a rude tone. I literally quietly chuckled because it was crazy how rude her tone was. I develop my 120 film at a pro lab in Utah and California normally, as I am a full time film and wedding photographer. I didn't have time to ship the film out and needed the scans right away, so I had to use one locally. In terms of scanning quality, not great. Inconsistent from frame to frame, which shouldn't happen that staggeringly considering most of the 5 rolls were shot with the exact same settings. The sharpening setting was on the scanner is up completely too high. Way too sharp and very unflattering. The color in the scans is way off. Sometimes way too yellow, sometimes way too cyan. I tried to fix the photos in Lightroom, mostly using exposure, temperature and split toning to counteract their tones. Overall in image quality, very poor. Price - $188 for 5 rolls of film done in one day. Timeliness was not a factor, but I paid twice the normal price to make that happen. Other big issue is the way they deliver the files. They only offer them on a disc. If you have an Apple Mac from the past four or so years, you know that they don't have a disc drive. The lady working suggested I buy a disc reader for my computer. Crazy. So I had to go to an office supply store, buy a USB and bring it back to them. Waited for them to develop and scan and then went back to pick up. Huge waste of time considering that every other pro lab delivers via Dropbox, WeTransfer or FTP. I am writing this review because I want them to make it. I want this lab to survive because film is a beautiful and wonderful medium and I have made a living off of it for years. So I would love to see: 1) Nicer customer service. That was an incredibly rude transaction and weirdly she was a lot nicer when I came to pick up the film. Must have picked up on my shocked facial expression. 2) Better scanning. I heard they use Frontier, great. Noristu and Frontier are what my normal lab offers. But why was I not asked for a profile? Light/dark, warm/cold, sharpness level, etc. All other pro labs offer a custom profile. If they do do this, that wasn't explained. 3) A different delivery method. She made the comment that it would be so expensive to do something like Dropbox. I would argue that it'll cost you more not to in the long run because even if the scans were perfect, I would never drop off and pick up a USB/disc every time. Big inconvenience. I know multiple all film wedding photographers in the city who spend $10,000-30,000 a year on developing and scanning with out of town labs. Take that business back! Why aren't they developing here? The above issues are 100% why. Overall, please make these changes and then let us know when you have, we want you to make it! read more

This place was recommended to me by a friend they said their customer service was great but what I received was subpar. I had called this location about getting my camera repaired and they said they could try but if not they can send it in to get repaired by the manufacturer but to definitely bring it by and drop it off. When I brought it to the location they had told me the exact opposite of what the woman on the phone told me. And then they proceeded to tell me to try doing it myself at home. The day after a fun and crazy house party, my husband and I discovered that the lens on our Canon PowerShot was slightly dented and wouldn't go back into the camera body. Because it recognized a "lens error," the camera also wouldn't take pictures. I called Canon's support line but they insisted that I send the camera in for a free diagnosis. I was suspicious that the issue wouldn't be covered under warranty and we would end up having to pay a lot to have them repair it. So, based on a recommendation from a Yelp talk thread (thanks, Chris T!), I decided to check out Tempe Camera. When I walked in the main entrance, I quickly saw the repair desk on the right (it was clearly marked and easy to spot). There was no line, so the woman working behind the counter called me right up. She patiently listened as I explained the problem. She did say that the lens issue would not be covered under Canon's warranty and that Tempe Camera would cost me ~$175 to repair ($100 for part; $75 for repair). I truly appreciated how up front she was about the cost and the fact that she didn't try to convince me to pay for repairs when replacement would probably cost the same or less. This honesty made the business come across as very reputable and trustworthy. I doubt I will be back to Tempe Camera since my photography efforts are limited to taking digital pictures of my cats and posting them on Facebook and it seems that it costs more to fix digital cameras than to replace them. However, I appreciated Tempe Camera's integrity and would recommend them to anyone who takes photography seriously and has a really nice camera that needs repairs. read more

As a Photography major I rarely have a chance to get my camera cleaned since I'm finally out for summer I figured I'd take the time to get my sensor cleaned. I am an hour away from this place but I made the drive to drop it off/pick it up. That's fine if I was happy with the service but I wasn't. Not only was it not cleaned properly but the customer service was very defensive and accusatory. I stopped in here for a sensor cleaning and got talked up to the mirror/viewfinder cleaning for an extra 20.00. Well, I got my camera back today and it now has several new black fibers and 2 spots that I can see clearly through the viewfinder. I know for a fact those were not there before because that would have driven me nuts. Upon calling back they told me that it was there already because the clerk wrote down on the paper that he couldn't remove several hairs. Duh how can I prove what dust was there and what wasn't? I can't obviously. I'm telling you those were not there, I know my camera well! Then she proceeded to try and blame me by asking if I had cleaned my lens back before putting it on. She went right into defense basically saying that once the camera is out of their hands there's no way to prove what dust is what. I get that but the thing is that I paid you to clean the dust and you not only didn't clean it but you put NEW dust and fibers on my viewfinder. I look through my viewfinder on a daily basis, I would know if there were giant black hairs blocking my view. They told me it would cost 100.00 to get the hairs/spots off. Hmm so first it's an extra 20 to clean the viewfinder, now it can't be cleaned unless it's disassembled? So then what does their so called viewfinder cleaning consist of for an extra 20.00? Wiping the outside part with alcohol? I blame myself for getting suckered in, you know you try to do the right thing and have your equipment cleaned professionally but people take advantage. Hopefully I can save you from making the same mistake. Go somewhere else and do the mirror/viewfinder cleaning yourself. read more

I want to add my praise to Tempe Camera. I am a novice photographer with nice little Canon. I noticed a spot in all my pictures and figured it was water on my lens. I called my local Ritz (of which I am a memeber BTW) and explained my issues. I just wanted to know what to clean it with but they went on about how it could be water in the camera and I'd better send it in. I then called Tempe Camera as I friend had successfully used their services. I had a very nice helpful young lady assure me that if I cleaned the lens properly and it didn't go away THEN i could bring it in and they'd look at it to see if I needed more extensive and expensive work done. I needed a new camera bag and found myself at Tempe Camera. Wow! It was like a smorgasbord of all things camera. Repair, lab, equipment, books and supplies all under one roof. They also rent equipment for what seems to be quite reasonable prices, including a negative scanner I may check out. Staff was friendly, and I found a bag I like-small backpack that doesn't weigh 40 lbs empty either. Although I was not planning to return it, I came home and priced the same bag on Amazon to see just how much more I had to pay to try out that bag in person. Eli left me a message which I did not receive and Tempe Camera did not follow up to see if I received his message and they went ahead and did the order without me approving the huge price difference..I would have not done the order if I had known how much more it was going to be. This is terrible customer service. They should have kept trying to contact me for approval of the huge price difference. I would have told them not to do the order. Remember APS film? I do--especially since I still have two undeveloped rolls of it from an old Europe trip a number of years ago. The Walgreens near my house apparently has APS equipment, but they haven't used it in years and the guy there doesn't even know how to turn it on (or if it even works.) What to do in a situation like this? Call Tempe Camera. While they'll charge you a fairly hefty price (over $30) for a service like this, they'll get the job done well. Friendly, straight-forward service. For the box full of disposable cameras that my wife has, I'll still head to Walgreens. But to get those remaining APS rolls finally developed after 12 years, Tempe Camera will give me what I'm looking for. Highly recommended. read more

At the ripe old age of 3, it's time for my previous review to take a siesta. Over the course of that three years, Tempe Camera's only gotten better. The selection's improved (finally finding a happy medium between film and digital), the prices are even better than they were, and I dare say service on the retail side's kickass too. TCR is now my go-to photo supplier as a working pro. They've either got what I need or can quickly get it, they still know their stuff, and they support both local photographic education and the local photo industry. They're also the only dealer in the Valley that sells Think Thank Photo products, which are best damn professional camera bags ever. And if you're an amateur, they've got plenty of friendly, knowledgeable staff for you too. Don't be afraid to ask for someone else; like almost anywhere, they employ people of varying personalities. There are sales staff I don't click with at TCR, but I wouldn't classify anyone as distinctly rude. (If you want that, you'll have to try B&H or Adorama.) If you need lots of hand-holding, the ASU crush probably means you'll either want to shop at off hours or go to Photomark--TCR tries, but the crowd to counter ratio just isn't favorable at peak times. Repairs are still something they do very well at excellent prices. When I've had equipment serviced, it's been turned around quickly, relatively inexpensively, and works like brand new. Evaluation of your equipment is still free, as it should ideally be at every repair shop (but often isn't). The lab's added a bunch of cool new services, including damn fine plexi mounting, and is doing a considerably better job with film than their old reputation for free scratches with purchase would suggest. Hundreds of frames processed with nary a scratch to be found. Rentals I'm a little more ambivalent about. They've thinned the herd out considerably (about half the rentals inventory has taken up residence in the used equipment case) and the selection of lighting equipment is basically unchanged, but they've got the latest Canon and Nikon bodies, and everything's well-maintained and in good shape. Rates are good for what they do have--the question's just if they have what you want. read more

Meh. While I don't have any experience with the rental department, the sales department is needing some serious lessons in customer service. Latest example - called to ask whether they carry an intervalometer for my camera, and was met with a 10 minute hold on the phone.. Here's the conversation after waiting 10 minutes: (Note - I found an intervalometer online for $39 bucks): Sales guy: bla bla 99 dollars Me: Okay, thanks. I think I will keep shopping around. Sales guy: *click*! Seriously? I won't be coming back to these guys, simply because they are pretentious jerks! read more

Ordered on-line so I could swing by later in the day to pick up the lens. When I arrived several hours later in-store, they initially had no record of the order. I showed my e-mail from them and the pending charge on my account. I was advised their on-line is done through a different company and they could not give me the lens nor reverse the charge at that time. I was left waiting for 30 minutes as the store employee came and disappeared several times in attempt to help. Conclusion, cannot help me, but offered to charge me again for the lens. Yeah, no. I'm going to get the lens somewhere else and later reverse my charge. Horrible customer service. read more
