While researching this race, I found precious little in the way of information I needed. I ran it anyway, and was disappointed. First: the course. This course is not for a casual runner. If you don't train on long, steep hills seriously, don't run this race. From the start line, you make a right and eventually double back, run past the start and do the same double back from the other direction. The first 5 miles or so is on a dirt/gravel road with gentle rolling hills. This can lead to a false sense of security, most people breezed through this portion, as did I. It wasn't as scenic as I had hoped, but during this portion there wasn't any vehicular traffic. After passing the start line to begin the second half, you encounter a mix of pavement and dusty roads. Many people were left choking on the dust kicked up by vehicles passing without much regard for the runners. Some hills begin around mile 6/7, and after conquering the first one or two you feel accomplished. Then this course craps on your head. From mile 8 on, there is no level ground and you are faced with long steep hill after long steep hill. They are brutal. Even the pacers were commenting on how this is not a half marathon course, but a hill training course. You cross the finish line with little fanfare. Most people were in a foul mood after finishing.
As to the event organization: school busses were used to shuttle runners. I had no issue with this, but the bus drivers themselves were terrible, ours missed the turn to the start, then backed down the highway to make the turn. Then runners were forced to unload and walk the remainder of the way to the start when the busses came to an impasse with one another. There were plenty of porta-pottys at the start, but I recall only one on the course. The race started on time. During the race, water stations were placed so that when you doubled back you could hit the same one coming and going. They offered only water, no sports drinks. Two of the stations offered gels, I think arohnd mile 8 and mile 10. After crossing the finish line, you were offered half a banana and nothing else. Music was playing, but it wasn't live music like advertised. You received a nice medal for finishing. Wine and beer tasting cost $15 for 3 tastings. Any of the wineries offer 6 for $15. I skipped that. We loaded back on the bus and had to wait for our bus driver to have a friendly conversation with another bus driver, after which they almost collided and got stuck trying to maneuver around each other.
All in all, I was disappointed in this event. I've run other half marathons where the atmosphere was much more encouraging and you got a lot more for your money. I won't run this again, and judging by the comments I heard around me, I don't think they'll see a lot of return runners. read more
