I've been going to both Teddy's locations for the pepper and egg during lent for 25ish years. I don't practice lent. I do practice this sandwich. The dogs and beef and sausage are also excellent but the P&E is the top 3 in the west burbs easily. Quick friendly service but ask for a fork!! You'll need it. read more

It had been up to a couple decades ago since I've been in here. Learn there was a new owner a year ago, very friendly along with his staff. Enjoyed an Italian beef dipped, hot, crinkle cut fries and excellent cheese sauce for them. I look forward to additional visits to get some hotdogs and some Italian ice. It was hard enjoy the chicken sandwich, bacon cheeseburger, 1 order of fries and an ice cream cup for 50.00+ dollars. I ordered online and picked it up and the prices on the menu in the restaurant were less. The chicken sand was 4.00 less and the same for the burgerbut because i ordered online through them it was upcharged. The was also a convenience fee added. I will not be back. read more

Just to be transparent, I am giving this place 5 stars solely based on the Italian beef. I struggle to find Italian beef that's better than Portillo's, and this place delivered. I had it TWO days ago and I already am craving it. The fries were just meh, and my husband got a Chicago hot dog that seemed good (but he was jealous of my beef). read more

While there should be really small variability with hotdog stands, this one stood out - and not necessarily in a good way. The prices were REALLY high for what it was, and despite ordering a two hotdog, fry and drink combo to split with my husband, our hotdogs were very different from one another. He had two pickle spears, I had one. My tomatoes were thick cut half slices, his were wedges. While the actual hot dog was a high quality dog, the rest was inconsistent and high priced. There are other places that are a better, more consistent, more reasonably priced deal. read more

Stopped by on a trip to Downers Grove. Had the Italian Beef, fries, and O-rings. Portions were all great, juicy beef and crispy fries and rings. Staff was friendly and service was fast. Might be the BEST beef I've ever had!!! (I need to debate and try Teddy's again). Sweet peppers are special. Beef has a little spice and has a DEEP flavor. I just moved to the area and saw all the great reviews, so I gave Teddy's a try. I left totally disappointed...the sandwich lacked seasoning, was greasy, and over priced. The restaurant was worn and unappealing and felt outdated. If you want a good beef travel to Johnny's in Elwood Park, Al's in Chicago, or even Portillo's. read more

Teddy's Red Hots and Beef is of my top five favorite Italian beef places to dine. Except for their elevated prices, the food quality is excellent. Beef is sliced fresh every morning and the au jus has just the right amount of spices to make it not too spicy, but comfortably tasty. Tamales are great, and I love the homemade Italian ice flavors. NOTHING at all like, or associated with the Teddy's on 63rd & Main Streets in Downers Grove. The cash register clerk is ornery and reminds me of a reject from a motorcycle gang. Plus their prices are exorbitant for what you get. read more

3.6 stars is crazy high. The food is lower quality than what I feed my animals. 14.99 for 2 hot dogs, fries and a drink is laughable. Is this place in a stadium. The owner is an ignorant prick that should soon be going out of business if this is the quality he supports. Stay as far a way as possible the building is disgusting and aged. For what they're charging you'd think it'd be ritzy. read more

I grew up on johnies in elmwood park so I'm an Italian ice snob. My wife has lived in the area for 20 years and lives it's place. I'd gone a couple times but been disappointed by Italian ice everywhere else so I wouldn't even try it. One day teddy gives me a free cup while I wait. So I give it a try and it was really excellent. Here's the crazy thing he gave me mango which I never had before and it was so amazing I get it everything now. 2 thumbs up. read more

The price point is right on for the quality/quantity of the food! There was only one problem.....it was gone! We chose Teddy's over a Steakhouse and a Seafood restaurant and we are so happy we did....IT IS DELICIOUS... You can taste the love for the food and the cleanliness of the grill which is very important to us!! You will be pleasantly surprised. We were!! This is no fast food restaurant.. this is amazing.... FROZEN IN TIME Even 20-some years later, the icy cold treats haven't changed at this hot dog haven on 63rd & Main St in Downers Grove. Growing up in the area and attending high school at nearby DG South, I've been to this Teddy's countless times since I was a wee lad. There's another, smaller Teddy's Red Hots on Plainfield in Darien, so try not to get the two locations confused, mmmkay? When we met my parents for a quick bite on 8/23/19, the same guy I remember from my childhood was manning the counter! How's that for trippy? The dude takes your order and relays it to the line cooks behind him, but don't take it personally if he doesn't smile. He's a no-nonsense kind of cool. Back in the late 90's, they had Galaga and a Star Trek pinball table near the front door (which fueled my obsession with arcade games at a young age). In their place was some unplugged jukebox and seating for to-go orders. Man do I miss those games..... I'll admit that prices are pretty high: an Italian beef is $7, standard hot dog $3, and order of cheese fries $4. The i-beef was tasty enough, seeing as how I destroyed the entire sandwich w/sweet peppers in less than two minutes. Checking-in on Yelp will unlock '1 free hot dog (w/purchase of hot dog, drink & fries)'. Nice offer on their part. Bread = 4.5 Circuses = 4 Though the red hots are part of the name, the real draw for Teddy's -- and what sets them apart from the competition -- is the frozen custard and italian ice. Vanilla, chocolate, or swirl are your choices for custard flavors and they'll stack the cone up real high. Aside from lemon, they also had black cherry, mango, and raspberry italian ice. * TL;DR * Much like Mickey's in Oak Park on Harlem, Teddy's is an old school dig. So maybe the employees aren't the most outgoing bunch, and maybe food costs more here than it did in 1998, but there's an unexplainable charm about the place......a charm that dates back many years. When I'm in the area and get a craving for some frozen custard & a Chicago-style red hot, I'd happily give Teddy's my patronage. read more

I highly recommend the Philly cheesesteak at Teddy's! The shaved and chopped fresh prime ribeye is carefully grilled with onions and mozzarella cheese and served on a toasted Turano French roll. The steak is piled high and delicious. It never disappoints! I also recommend the combo. The sausage is outstanding and the beef melts in your mouth. For dessert you have to try the black cherry Italian ice! The food is so good at Teddy's that I keep coming back! read more

Stop for hotdog and fries. The building itself needs some improvement. The bathroom was in pretty poor condition. Missing floor tiles, dirty. I thought it was just OK and paying $3.99 for a small order of fries I think is a bit much. read more

This place is awesome! I moved from Chicago to the western suburbs 30 years ago. For about 10 years I searched for a decent beef and/or combo. I finally stopped looking and when I had the urge, I'd drive into the old neighborhood. No more. I found Teddy's Red Hots a couple of weeks ago and it is, by far, the best beef/combo for miles around. The beef is house made, somewhere between sliced and shaved, tender, generous portions, and totally delicious. Friendly service and appreciative owners. I have no problem paying the price as you get what you pay for. Also, try the Italian Ices. The Black Cherry was great! read more

I've gotten to the point that I'll stop into Teddy's for the Italian ice only. I'm not sure if I've ever dealt with someone who's in a good mood there and the fellow that I imagine is Teddy is one solid sourpuss. If I can't get some friendly treatment along with my food then I lose all interest in the restaurant, no matter what the price range and food style is. Plus, the food is just...food. Nothing amazing about it. Nothing you can't get at a hundred other mediore spots. read more

It's a pretty popular spot, it's right next to the Metra station, so it can get crowded, especially on a weekend night, but thankfully we were able to get a table without a reservation, but wouldn't hurt to to have one. Would definitely come back if I'm in the area.
