I put 5 stars because, while Yelp enables it, people abuse it. I am talking about the 5000 friends…read moreYelp members. They find you and befriend you. And that is where the interaction stops. You will never get a like from them. They will never read one of your reviews; who has time with 5000 friends? I am an old-school guy. I like your reviews, and I will take the time to read them and comment on them. Another thing I do is cull out "friends" who haven't posted in a year. Three people don't post anymore. I keep them because they have passed away. Out of respect for our past friendship, I will never delete them. I turn down friend requests almost weekly. I am 77 years old, and a smoking-hot woman with no reviews does not want my friendship. I will also look at friend requests, and if you have more one-star reviews than 5-star reviews, you will not make my friends list. Thus, there are only 287 friends; I don't need to collect friends to stroke my ego. I want friends who will laugh and interact with me.

Yelp advertising: more spam calls than customers…read more I run a mobile video game party business in the DFW area and signed up for Yelp advertising to reach more local families. The results so far: zero measurable bookings from Yelp, and a nonstop barrage of sales calls from overseas call centers offering to "get me listed on Google" and other platforms. The calls started almost immediately after the listing went live, which tells me where they got my number. When I raised the issue with my Yelp account executive, Raymond, he stopped answering the phone. My emails get a one-line reply telling me to contact customer support, which is the opposite of what an account executive is for. If you're a small business considering Yelp ads, budget for the phone spam, not the customers. Not worth it in my experience.
