I just found this place and it makes me so sad that I didn't know about it sooner. All of the missed opportunities for a delicious dinner! This is my favorite Thai restaurant in the valley. Everything I've had here is delish. I especially love their curries. My favorites are the yellow and panang curries. All the vegetables that they serve with their dishes are steamed to perfection: tender, but still a little crunchy. I like to order a side of steamed vegetables and mix it in with whatever I get for my entrée. I can often get 3 filling meals out of it that way, and seriously-those veggies are so good! They don't offer brown rice which is a bummer, but they will always give you extra rice to take home with your leftovers if you ask. I've dined in once or twice, but typically just get take out. Other reviewers have mentioned it, but I will second it: their spice scale is no joke! I am a fan of spicy food (not anything crazy, but I'm certainly no wimp), and their level 2 is just barely too hot for me. I order 2 anyways because I just love the flavor, but I drink a lot of water, and every time I tell myself I'll order 1 the next time (maybe I can do 1 1/2?!). My husband likes their thai iced tea, but it is very sweet. Service is good, the waitresses are always friendly, and the first time we dined there went over the spice scale to make sure we knew what we were getting ourselves into. Spicy means spicy! Tried this for the first time and the lady on the phone warned their spiciness was legit. Did not read reviews beforehand unfortunately, and honestly wasn't too worried about it. New to SLC but everywhere else I've lived I usually order max or "Thai spicy" and still have to add cayenne or something half the time. We ordered 3/5 because I have been having issues with heartburn and my husband usually orders less spicy than me. Whoa. It was legit. Their 3 was spicier than any maximum spicy food I have been served at Thai restaurants everywhere from Dc to San Francisco. I can't imagine how they can make it one, much less two, levels spicier. Will definitely try this place again though bc the ingredients looked fresh (hard to taste anything but spicy). This review is mostly for the food, as this restaurant is a hole in the wall, and you'll be coming for the food. We froze our butts off every time a new guest opened the door. To start we had the fresh spring rolls, and I must say I've never had one more fresh, though I don't feel that the rolls are served with enough meat, and that their peanut sauce was practically a sweet syrup. For our main course we ordered yellow curry, one number 2, and mine the spicy 4. The curry was great, a bit sweet, and a little weird to see it served with tomato.. but the flavors and spice definitely played well with the dish. I must say that no flavor was sacrificed for the heat. To finish our meal we had the sticky rice with mango.. Absolutely divine and exotic, the sweet, warm, and savory flavors melted the curry flavor right off my tongue, the warm rice and ice cold mango definitely soothed any burn left from my spicy meal. Also as my last note, If you're unaware of how their heat scale works their scale is from 1 through 10, 5+ is quite the serious matter. read more

This is some of my favorite Thai food around, and after a few experiences at Tea Rose I think I can provide a few words of advice to those who want to eat here. 1) Let's mention the 0-10 heat scale right away. Zero means no spice. One is a traditional spice. Two might melt your face off. Seriously. Don't order above a 2 until you've tried their 2 sauce for reference. You can only order up to a 7 on your first trip. You have to complete a bowl of 7 curry before they will allow you to try a 10. And you have to sign a 2-page waiver before trying a 10. For real. 2) Variety. You want classic American diner food? Great! They've got that too. So if your pals don't want Thai food, get the regular ol' pancake breakfast or whatever. 3) Homemade ice cream. It's delish. 4) Parking kinda sucks. There are a few places out back, but then you have to park on the street. Just be careful of the No Parking signs and you'll be fine. It's Murray, not downtown, so really you're just fine. 5) Curry is where it's at. Fish curry is good. Really good. Mango curry. Oh shoot, all the curry is good. I'm less a fan of the noodle dishes, but they're still great. Unless you're talking about the kow soi (spelled differently everywhere I see it). That's a really great dish. Totally different than the way others in town prepare it. And it's funny, the three Thai places in SLC that serve it all claim they're the only ones that do. I don't have the heart to tell them. (Sala Thai and Andaman are the others). 6) I once made it to spice level 7 and learned a lot about myself and my digestive system that day/the next day. 7) This is the original place Annie and her husband opened. They also operate Chabaar in Midvale on 7200 S. Stuff seems a bit cheaper here, but at Chabaar they have a few things not available at Tea Rose. Go. Enjoy this out-of-the-way little diner for some really nice Thai or American food. The mayor eats here. The firemen eat here. Even the congressman back from DC has eaten here. The owner of Tea Rose is absolutely delightful. So very friendly and warm. Speaking of warm. If you like spicy, then go to Tea Rose. This place means serious business when it comes to spice, as you can order your food on spicy levels from 1 to 10. I'll admit, my Scottish blood isn't too fond of spicy, so when she asked me what level of spicy I wanted for my Pad Thai, I went with a 1, and it was perfect for me. I tried the 2 and 3, and they were a bit too much for me. So the next time your friend that is always saying his food isn't spicy enough is acting a little too tough, take them here and make them order a 7 through 10. And watch him sweat. After numerous visits, here's a list of my favorite items on the menu and how I order them: - Appetizer: Thai Lettuce Beef Wraps, with Cream Cheese Wontons coming in a close 2nd, both served with the same delectable sauce, except the wraps have peanuts added. - Salad: Larb, with beef, no higher than a level 2, level 1 if you've never had larb before, served with perfect sticky rice. - Soup: Tom Yum, the last word explains it all. - Curry: Massamun at a Level 2 or 3 depending on the day, with chicken. - Noodle Dish: Pad See Ew, at a Level 2, with beef. For some reason much tastier at Tea Rose than Chabaar. Or if I'm with the boyfriend, Pad Thai with chicken, Level 1, and ask for an extra wedge of lime. - Dessert: Honey-Lavender ice cream, it's perfectly sweet, floral, and helps to calm down any of heat you weren't expecting from the above dishes. Thai Tea ice cream is also a treat, but is very rich and heavy. - Drink: Thai Iced Tea. Hands down, they make it perfectly. While I do enjoy other items on the menu and find myself ordering them occasionally, these are my absolute favorites. I grew up in a Thai household and I lived in Bangkok for 10 years so I can say with some surety if a restaurant actually has good authentic Thai food. I'm constantly being asked to give recommendations on Thai restaurants and I typically try to avoid answer the question and give a none answer like my mom's kitchen. I had high hopes based on the reviews that this would turn out to be my go to answer. Alas it isn't so. We started out with the Nam Thok a beef salad which is a typical Issan dish (one of my favorites). It's a sliced beef salad with lime, herbs and toasted crushed rice. It was good. I got a heat level of one. There was a nice mild heat to it. Not the best cut of beef but it was tender. The overall dish was a little dry missing some of the juice (sauce is a bad word here but I can't think of another one) that I typically associate with nam thok. We also got fresh spring rolls that came with a peanut dipping sauce. I didn't have any but my 5 year old devoured them. The Thai iced tea was perfect. I will be back just for this. It was just the right level of sweet - as in didn't make my teeth hurt - and the perfect blend of tea and milk. It also wasn't a creepy neon orange like I've seen in other places. This is where they lost me. I ordered the grilled chicken (gai yang) and sticky rice for my kids and the pineapple curry with chicken spice level one for myself. Their gai yang had obviously not been grill but baked in an oven, it was over cooked and lacked that beautiful flavors of garlic, cilantro, and turmeric. My curry was mostly tasteless and had zero spice - which is weird since the nam thok was also a one and had a nice little kick to it. But what really irritated me was that there was pretty much no chicken in it. For $10 I expect more than 4 bites of chicken. I did taste JeremyF's red curry spice level 3 and it was pretty darn good. We finished off the meal with mangos and sticky rice. It came swimming in the sweet coconut sauce that's usually just drizzled on the rice. Too much if you ask me, just right if you ask my kids. The staff was amazingly friendly and attentive. The feel of the resultant was like American diner meets Bangkok hole in the wall. It was perfect. For 4 adults and 2 kids (and no alcohol) the bill came to $90 which I thought was pretty steep seeing as how the kids shared a meal. I'm definitely going back for the Thai iced tea and I want to try the tom yam which is another of my favorite dishes but I can't honestly rave about this place. This restaurant was highly recommended by people and did not disappoint. I ordered the Larb and Chicken Panang curry. The food had great taste and was spicy. Regarding spiciness, the tofu Larb was a 1 and the curry was a 4. Both tasted great and the curry was fairly spicy. I think I could go for a spicier number, but we will see. This time when I went back, I tried a 5 out of 5 spicy level, the highest on the menu. "Don't do it" the waitress said. "You're crazy" my friends said. "This will be hilarious" random internet strangers said. Have you ever decided it would be a good idea to pick up a burning ember of charcoal and stick it in your mouth? Because that is how hot this curry was. Real men cry sometimes right? Because I certainly shed a few tears amidst the beads of sweat streaming down my face. But real men also don't quit, especially when internet strangers are watching you eat via livestream on Periscope. So perservere on I did until I cleaned out the bowl. Have you ever then decided it would be a fantastic idea to drop your drawers and take a sit on the biggest fire ant hill you can find? Because that's how it feels about 3 hours later when your body decides to purge this lava curry from hell from your stomach. Okay so any time I'm at an Indian or Thai restaurant and they ask how spicy I want it, one question runs through my mind: "Is it legit spicy, or white boy spicy?" This place is legit spicy. There's a notice on the menu saying they won't serve above spice level 3 to first-timers. I heeded the warning and ordered a 3. A quarter of the way through my dish, my sinuses were clear and my eyes were bleary. It was awesome. The flavor of the dish was fantastic too (mango curry), something that tends to get lost in the spice. I'm falling back to spice level 2 for now and working my way up. I've been here a handful of times so I feel I can adequately review this restaurant. I first heard about this place from friends who tried it on a whim and were impressed that the food was actually spicy, in fact, more spicy than they anticipated. Fast forward several months later, I had forgotten that conversation and was looking for a Thai restaurant to go to in the area. The first time I came here, I got pad see ew with a level 2 spiciness. I had tried the sauce at the table, which is a 1.5 level (I would recommend trying this to gauge their spiciness scale). The dish turned out to be just a tad too spicy for me - I usually like a medium level spiciness, just enough to feel the kick but still taste the flavor - this time, the flavor was overpowered by the spiciness. I couldn't finish it and had to take the rest home. I ended up having these leftovers with a side of rice and that balanced out well. Since then, I have come back to Tea Rose with friends and have always gotten a level 1.5 spiciness. However, I feel as though the scale isn't always consistent. Sometimes the dish isn't spicy at all, sometimes it is just how I like it. I get a little disappointed when I don't get that kick, but the food itself is still good. The service is good, I don't usually have to wait too long. If you're just paying with one card, then they'll usually have you do it at the table. Otherwise, they give 1 check for the group and if you want to pay for your own dishes, then each person can just pay at the counter. I like that this place is kinda a hole in the wall. From the name of the restaurant itself, you wouldn't be able to tell it was a Thai restaurant. It's also hidden from the main road, so it's likely you'd only hear about it from online or by word of mouth. This is nice since it's usually not very busy, which means I get my food faster! The owner of Tea Rose also owns Siam Noodle Bar and Chabaar Beyond Thai, so I feel like they have Thai food down! I would recommend, especially if you love spicy food. Love the food here, and I was at the very least getting takeout here once a week until last night's incident. You ever have such a ridiculously bad customer service experience that it leaves you dumbfounded? That was last night. As I was leaving the gym I called to make my takeout order. After several minutes of busy signals and the phone just ringing, I decided to drive there as the restaurant is somewhat between my gym and my house. Maybe their phones aren't working? Maybe they're having technical difficulties. I'm trying to give the benefit of the doubt. Still calling, still busy signals or just ringing. I get to Tea Rose and it's busy but not insanely so. I walk in, I can clearly hear the phone ringing. None of the staff are picking it up. It's ringing off the hook. I get to the counter, "hey what's going on with your phones? I've been calling to make an order." The woman at the cash register looked at me blankly and explained that THEYRE NOT PICKING IT UP ON PURPOSE because they're busy. A take out order will be an hour wait. How the hell was I supposed to find that out if you don't pick up the phone? I just wasted twenty minutes because you couldn't deign to let me know there would be a wait? Unbelievable. Hope the owners see this, if not I'll see them at Soho Food Park and tell them myself, while I buy food from someone else from now on. read more

With the reviews we were hoping this would be better. It seemed to be mainly the waitress. But they represent the restaurant. We asked questions about the food and she pretty much ignored us. After we got the food we never heard from her again. We had to go to the front counter to get the ticket and had to go back to get boxes for the leftovers. We were not impressed. Customer service 0. Charming environment and friendly staff. They are very good at explaining and answering questions I had about their food and how it was cooked. That is always impressive to me. Our waitress immediately wanted to know how tolerant we were to heat so she poured some spicy sauce on a plate and explained that was the typical heat of their dishes and we could request it milder if we liked. You can't go wrong with any of the curry dishes here. This is my favorite Thai place in town. It's tucked away in Murray looks closed most of the time from the outside, but is usually busy inside. Their pad thai is the best in town, I've tried a lot of pad thai in Salt Lake. Don't order above a 2 spice level if you really want to taste your food. I like my food to be spicy and I usually order my curry at a 2. If you're concerned about spice, order a 0, some days even the 1 is strong. For the price, you get so much food. This is the best Thai restaurant in town hands down. And this came from an Asian. The Tom Yum was tasty, a little spicy with just enough sourness to flirt with your taste buds. Mind you if you don't usually take hot food, order level one of the spiciness scale. We found out that level two was already pretty spicy. The Yellow Curry was good. It was as perfect as curry could be. I like that the coconut milk was not too overpowering, so I could really taste the curry and the spices better. We also ordered Phad Nuum Prik Phow - it was my first time trying this dish and oh my God, it was fabulously delicious. It was a stir fry with Thai chili sauce but gosh, there was like a burst of flavor in my mouth with every spoonfuls. I made a mental note to order this again next time. Finally we had Pad Thai which was also very good. I liked the ambience of this place. It felt homey. And the service was good too! My absolute favorite Thai restaurant. I eat here at least every other week if not every week. As someone who loves spicy food, this place does not disappoint. I get a level 3 every time, because if you go spicier, you have to pay extra. However, they always have extra chili flakes at the table, so you can make it spicier! I have tried a lot of their curry dishes and they are all very good. Pad Thai here is absolutely delicious and is very consistent. Tom Yum soup is also amazing! My SO has also tried most of their curries on the menu, and he has loved every single one of them very much. He has a very good spice tolerance (due to my influence) and gets level 2 on his curries and still struggles a bit. Keep in mind they make their own chili flakes here, so spice may vary a little bit depending on when you go! However, they are always very spicy for most people, so I would suggest Level 1 for most people who like spicy food. I noticed that some of the other reviews talk about their service. I have only ever experienced great customer service here. The staff are very nice and the service is relatively fast even when they are very busy! read more

This place sucks. My wife and I wanted an order to go, so we arrived in-person and placed our order. After waiting approximately 10-15 minutes, my wife inquired about our order and was told it was on its way. But, as time continued to pass, she was told multiple times the order was coming. In the meantime, other patrons who had arrived after us received their orders while we waited. In fact, parts of our order were given to other patrons. Finally, after waiting 40 minutes for our to go order, we were told it, in fact, had not been started. Unacceptable! It is one thing to mess up the order when placed, it is another to not be able to correct it in 40 minutes while we are waiting and inquiring about its status. It was my first, and last, time to visit this jacked-up place. No good! Not even an apology, we left empty-handed and hungry, thank you! read more
