I swear I reviewed this place and for some reason Yelp says I haven't, so here we go ..... This is one of the first boba spots in the area that I'd go to at least twice a week to get my fix in the first year I moved to NYC. However, after Culture Tea opened, I went there more often. I now only come to Tea Magic when making a run to Westside or something else that is closer to it. The store has one long bench against the wall with about 5 small round tables and a few seats. There is a counter on the other side of the store for people to place their drinks and lean on. They have free Wi-Fi in the store, so often you'll see students "camped" on the tables or side bench against the window. Other than boba they have a variety of food: steamed buns, dumplings, tea eggs, snow/shaved ice desserts, etc. So definitely a good choice for a boba and a snack. The service is usually quick, however they do not like making any changes after making your order, so be sure you know what you want. P.S. Don't forget a stamp card if you plan on making multiple visits. read more

I think I can sum up my experience at TMagic (or is it Tea Magic?) in just a few words: SUGARY, LARGE, and BOSSY. There is actually a good selection of milk tea and smoothie options. Just the other day, I saw them advertising for a Banana Milk Tea! I am usually boring and get either the Green or Black Milk Tea. And the drinks are decent for what they are - what you would expect. Nothing amazing. But one thing to note is that they put a ton of sugar in their drinks. So, if you're a little sensitive to sugar-overload, feel free to request 50% or even 30% sugar. Also, as you might see above the cash register, they have ENORMO sizes for their cups. Especially the "Large" size for the cold drinks. It looks like a can of detergent. Wait, detergents don't come in cans. Never mind. The people that work there aren't exactly the nicest though. I asked for an extra cup since I was sharing my drink with fiance, and the man responded, "We don't give extra cups." Sad. They don't don't like credit cards unless you spend over $5 and they put these warning signs by the place you are supposed to pick up your drink such as, don't talk to the "tea specialist" and my favorite, "DON'T PUT YOUR HAND IN HERE!" How can I pick up my drink without putting my hand in there? Eek. All in all, I'm giving it three stars since I will most probably still be back occasionally since I live 4 blocks away and crave my bubbles sometimes. Just don't talk to the tea specialist. Life uptown would be a little miserable if Tea Magic had not existed. This place has been my go-to spot whenever I crave boba. There's a wide selection of milk tea and other specialty drinks to choose from. My favorite is the Yogurt Green Tea with boba, which basically tastes like a cup of Yakult (delicious!). The consistency of the boba is pretty good, always chewy and fresh. For regulars, they have a stamp reward card system (Buy 10 get $3 off your 11th cup). Service is speedy and there are a few tables for customers who want to have their drinks at the store. Their sizing is interesting in that their large is HUGE and their small is the size of a regular cup of boba. I made the mistake of ordering their large once and almost had a boba-overdose. This was near the Columbia University, the Seinfeld restaurant and was small place. It was really hot in here for some reason and the seating was limited. There was a large group of people who took up all of the seats and tables except by the window. The menu had a lot of choices and I decided on a medium Black Milk Tea ($4.15) with pearls ($0.50). The medium size here was a lot of other places' large size and they displayed the different sized cups below the menu to help you decide. The milk tea with pearls took a few minutes to prepare. I can't believe I'm writing a positive review of this place. When it first popped up, a bubble tea place across the street from pink berry and not as close to campus as other bubble tea options, I thought it was doomed to fail quickly. I passed by daily wondering who thought this could be a good idea. I was angry that they were wasting a perfectly good store front in the Columbia food wasteland that could have been used for what I really want to see near Columbia (a good ramen place, like Naruto perhaps). Finally, yesterday, I decided I had to go in and find out what is up. I walked in smugly expecting the place to suck. The interior is awkwardly spacious for a place in Manhattan. It feels like they should be offering more there and just haven't figured out what or how. The options were confusing and it took me a while to figure it out while also taking the couple behind me even longer (hopefully that means I wasn't the only one). Eventually I asked the guy behind the counter what he suggested: oolong milk tea, cold. So I tried it. And the rest is a beautiful blur. It was absolutely 100% delicious. I'm actually anxious to go back. If they were open earlier in the morning (they don't open until 11am) I would stop by regularly on my way to work and treat this as my new go to morning caffeine fix. Now I actually hope this place can figure itself out and find where it fits into the neighborhood. They have foods they can warm up for you in the microwave as lunch options and asian pastries too, but I'm still crossing my fingers that they will expand to offer just a few more food types. TeaMagic is definitely a hit or miss place. Some of their flavors are the best I've ever had, while others are quite literally their worst. Here's an overview of the flavors I've had: 1. Hazelnut: Amazing, literally my favorite flavor ever. This is my usual order. 2. Taro: Also amazing, one of the best taros I've ever had. Definitely more on the sugary side (which I like). 3. Coconut: Very good -- more on the coconut side than the milk (which i like). 4. French Vanilla: Solid, definitely up there, but I've had better french vanilla. 5. Terrible terrible customer service. I ordered a gift pack $79.00 group of 8 teas. My first order. This was a gift for my daughter who was excited to try the tea. I like to purchase local to help out local small businesses. Well, Magic Hour tea is 34 miles from my home and it took 15 days to process the order and get it to me. Their website said it would arrive in 5 days. When I contacted them voicing my concerns, after 18 days, it just happen to arrive the next day. Funny how that happened. Also, I then received a response 3 days after sending inquiry. The response to me comes back to "Dear one". Your order was delivered on the 3rd and they listed the tracking number. No shit! Nothing about sorry for delay or anything about hoping we enjoy the tea. My the way on the message I sent them, I signed my full name. I don't need to be talked down to as "Dear one". Be aware of their poor processing practices and their condescending communications. I see from reviews, I am not the first to complain about their customer service. It's huuugggeeee But actually, there jumbo-sized bubble tea is literally jumbo-sized. We stopped by mainly because we saw other people walking down the streets with these gigantic cups. Unfortunately, that's all that amazed me. Their Thai Tea Bubble Tea was not so great. The tea was way too sweet (and with Thai tea flavor, that's saying something) and the bubbles were a little too soft for my liking. I will say that I did notice they were cooked in black sugar and honey, which is a personal favorite of mine and they get points for authenticity. It's a little pricey for bubble tea, but given the location and scarcity of options, I would say it's one of the best options around. They lots of other snacks and goodies, so if you're ever in the area with friends, craving boba, and want a place to hang out, hit up Tea Magic (Tmagic?). I feel like it's unfair to leave a review and I've only been hear once. so, this is just a benefit of the doubt review/rate. I came in hear looking for something quick. I'm not a straight up dairy person, haven't been for a minute, I do almond milk. So, looking at their teas I was excited to try their honey jasmine green tea. The man at the register, older and dressed in plain clothes, asked what size and if I wanted bubbles. I was shocked but pleasantly surprised that bubbles came in it so I said yes! After my order is processed he proceeds to make my drink and soon after his phone rings. While he's making my drink he's talking on the phone. Eventually he turns around and gives me a cloudy drink. Man, I'm stuck. Confused. Huh? So I just take the drink bc maybe this is how it's suppose to be made AND I have a bus that I've never taken before to catch. My first sip and I'm go "yeah this is milk". I could've went back and told him that this isn't what I asked for. But I didn't even feel like it because maybe just saying "honey jasmine green tea" was wrong. I probably should've said "dairy-free" too. Or he could've asked me tea or milk tea, so this confusion won't happen. Nevertheless, the drink was drunk. It wasn't that bad but I don't do dairy. I'd come back only to try the tea. TEA. Tea was good but bubbles were not. Bubbles were a little too chewy, but not entirely too off from good quality bubbles. The tea tasted great and hey have a variety of flavors. Some of the ones that peaked my interest were mint, chocolate, hazelnut. Prices were fair, about the same amount more or less by 50 cents for typical bubble tea. I asked for half sugar and hey graciously accommodated that. I have this a 3/5 because bubbles in bubble tea make half of the tea and while the actual tea was great the other half wasn't great. I would go back there if I was in the area but I wouldn't make a special trip out there just for these average bubble teas. They have ice cream and froyo but we didn't try that. As a entrepreneur and business owner that also started when I was younger in the restaurant business. I always try to give constructive criticism to other business owners, as well as calling out their employees that poorly represent the business they chose to work for. There was nobody there, the one attendant lady had the biggest negative attitude. I even had to ask her if anything was wrong with her. Her response was "I just woke up" followed by a bunch of attitude and slamming things after I asked her if she could use nondairy milk instead of cream. My drink was decent, but I won't go back and her negativity was so intolerable that I had to write a review so hopefully the owner will see it. C If you can't serve others with a smile, or at least, without the small brat attitude, then someone else deserves the job! Some of the flavors are decent, but alot of the drinks have little to no flavor and just taste like colored milk. I wouldn't bother at all with the food, it appears at a lot of locations that so few people order it that they don't know how to prepare it properly. read more

This was my first time ever trying bubble tea and I must admit it was a very thrilling experience. With every sip I took of my almond milk tea with bubbles I found myself both surprised and nervous that I might choke on the tapioca balls resting at the bottom! As many other reviewers have pointed out, this is decent *for the area* (well, not anymore, given that Shiny Tea opened nearby - see below). The boba is often not very good, and not as soft as it should be. It has the texture of boba that is a bit stale. Drinks aren't a bad price, but the flavors are all lacking. In particular, the taro milk tea has a grittiness and an odd aftertaste, and the almond milk tea is really bland. The food options are limited and just OK in terms of price and quality. I want to like this place more, especially since I work literally around the corner, but it's just mediocre boba on their best days and a horrible experience on the rest of their days. There's absolutely no reason to come here when Shiny Tea, which serves up consistently great boba AND is priced the same, is just a few blocks down the street. read more

Ordered a passion fruit black tea, normal sweetness with aloe and and a pomegranate black tea, 50% sweetness (an attempt to cut down on sugar, which was regrettably the wrong choice for here) also with aloe. I think if you're in the area and desperate then sure, stop by here. The passion fruit with 100% sweetness was pretty good but it couldn't mask the plastic-y taste of the aloe. It was really off-putting. So of course with 50% sweetness on the pomegranate, the plastic aloe taste was more pronounced. I ordered a small and wish they came in smaller. Couldn't understand why aloe would taste this way. Although I think I was tasting more of the tea instead of the sweetener/syrup/whatever they used to flavor their tea. I was looking around the Columbia campus to find a tea and snack bar and I came across this little tea shop. Inside they serve a variety of Asian teas, snack and yogurts/ice cream. Usually, the bubble teas I have ordered from other Asian tea shops have been cold, but out of curiosity, I ordered a bubble strawberry tea with milk that was hot!! I can't say that I particularly liked the taste of the tea, but the strawberry flavor was interesting. Tea Magic is a novelty tea bar by US standards and in my opinion hit or miss.
