The expertise, skill, and meticulous skill here just can't be matched. Easily the best place on the east coast to get fitted, no question.

The system, GTS, is cool where the golf ball auto loads onto the tee. But the quality of the golf balls are really low, the graphics aren't great, and again, I don't trust the data all the time. Bare bones inside which I don't mind.

After some research, I thought @GolfHouse would be a great first experience for him since they offer junior coaching and it's similar to a video game. When I emailed them with questions, they were the most quick and complete in response than any of the other Ashburn area courses. At this point we're 3 sessions in. Coach Ju Hee is very professional and confident, but has just the right style to keep my 10 year old engaged. In each session she has walked the line effectively between correcting swing issues and helping him understand how the game works, while also keeping it fun and engaging for him, which is probably the most important part at this point. The sessions involved 30 minutes of instruction and 30 minutes of free time in the bay which I'll sometimes use to take a few swings with my son. So far, this seems to be the right mix. Coach also shared the before/after swing photo I posted from session 2. While I'm not sure if other local coaches have this type of tech, I think this is a significant advantage because of the real-time feedback and insight it gives her into exactly what is happening. It's also great for us to see the progress he's making. Overall, I definitely would recommend @GolfHouse and Coach Ju Hee for lessons. At some point I'll probably book a bay with some of my friends who are more serious golfers during a lesson and see what they think about it.

Ryan has truly helped me improve my golf game-- I've gained 10 yds on average on my irons and 25-30+ yds on driver, my scoring average has gone down by about 10 strokes, and I have a lot more shots in my bag now. I saw significant improvement in just a few lessons, but I've continued to stick with it because Ryan has helped me improve my golf IQ. The GolfTEC setup provides a lot of data points- club and body angles, swing and ball speeds, path, etc. Ryan takes the time to explain how to interpret the data and apply it to my swing and my game. I'm able to fix my swing on the course when needed because he's helped me understand it better. I've heard people say GolfTEC has a one-size-fits-all rather than individual approach, but that has not been my experience. Ryan is always working and thinking about the next step to elevate my game; he is always thinking about a plan and how each lesson contributes to my goals. The lessons are very interactive-- I ask questions, discuss the concepts, watch videos. Ryan takes the time to make sure I understand. He is a great coach. He is very professional and knowledgeable, and has always treated me with nothing but respect and kindness. A+++ Would recommend to beginners and experienced golfers alike. Two of my beginner friends have also taken lessons from Ryan, and they've made big improvements.

Over the past three months, the greens have looked absolutely fantastic. The mowing lines are incredibly neat and consistent, giving the course a well-maintained and professional appearance. I had previously played at the private clubs multiple times via my membership in the Heritage Hunt Retired Men's Golf Association. Belmont, International, Westwood, Army navy, Fairfax and River Bend are all great clubs, but all have really high entry fees and monthly dues. But, except for Belmont, they have 5-year waiting lists. To be nice, Hidden Creek and Chantilly have maintenance problems. That left the public courses. Herndon is extremely busy and 15 traffic lights away. Penderbrook's fairways are too narrow and slanted for my style of play. Last on my list was Reston National. I had heard about all the problems the last few years with ownership, management, pace of play and conditions. Surprise! They hired Kemper Golf last year, closed up for six months and rebuilt portions of the course. Compared to the area private clubs the fairways and greens are now equivalent; the roughs are consistent and the bunkers, while sometimes trashed by other players are in fair condition. The tee boxes still need lots of work. Pace of play has been consistently 4:00 to 4:20. I play Monday - Friday and rarely cannot get a tee time or wait on the tee box. Apparently the really slow players quit last year and changed to other courses (yeay). I have been told they have ordered new range balls, although the range mats need replacement. Compared to the private clubs being an A- they are a B-. Compared to the public clubs being a C they are an A-. Not sure of weekend golf here. Also, cannot verify all the rumours of converting to condos and townhouses.

Walked in around 4:20 for my 4:30-5:30 "(Indoor) Performance Studio lesson"…read more I was welcomed by Kelly King ( with whom I had the lesson with ) with a big smile and a handshake which always gives a good first impression. Since I was a little early and there was junior classes going on , I was told to take a seat until my time started. The seating area had full view of the facilities , water available and a TV where a golf tournament was on. For the ten minutes I was seated , I was watching Steve WenPetren coach the junior class that was going on . He seemed very engaged with each of the kids during practice and seemed supportive while also providing advice. Now onto my lesson. It was undoubtedly 100% the best hour I have ever spent on my golf swing ever. We used the TrackMan to measure swing characteristics and swing data . Within minutes , Kelly had me hitting straighter , further and more consistent with my pitching wedge, all backed up by hard data/numbers. We moved onto putting , pitching , driving and full iron shots , all within the hour. He helped me engage parts of my body to help my golf swing that not only looked better on camera but I can see with the swing data myself. I was also given some tips to take to the range and putting green to improve my game outside of lessons. I was semi-doubtful of how much I could change in an hour, but I was proved wrong and I will be back in the future. I was given an email with the data of almost every shot I hit ( including a couple of videos ). 100% would recommend. Thanks Kelly !

The facility itself is clean, impressive, and well maintained. Unfortunately, my experience with the golf instruction was disappointing. As part of the membership, I received a swing assessment with Shane. During the assessment, he never asked about my handicap, my golf background, my typical ball flight, my goals, or what I was hoping to improve. I felt like I was being judged entirely on my swing without any context about my game. He showed me pictures of Ben Hogan's and Tiger Woods' swings and suggested that I watch PGA tournaments and pay attention to how players practice. He told me my takeaway was wrong, that I needed to widen my setup, and that I needed to rotate my shoulders. However, I was given very little instruction on how to make those changes. I was given a swing sequence and a shoulder exercise, but no real progression or repeatable drills to help me develop the new movement. At the end of the lesson, I was asked if I wanted to sign up for five lessons for $550. I was already somewhat deflated by the experience, but I wanted to improve my swing, so I decided to continue. When I came back for my second lesson, Shane did not remember me. He again showed me the same Ben Hogan and Tiger Woods swing pictures and once again told me to watch PGA tournaments and watch players practice. It felt like I was receiving essentially the same lesson for a second time. This time, he moved me farther away from the ball and then told me to choke up on the club. I told him that I felt extremely far from the ball and that I could feel my back pulling to compensate for the position. I took three swings, and on the third swing I lost my balance. He then pointed out that I was out of balance. From my perspective, the setup changes had contributed to the problem, and I wasn't given a clear explanation of why the changes were being made. My biggest issue was not that he identified things in my swing that needed work. I expected to be critiqued. My issue was that I was often given 10 things to fix but no clear plan for how to fix them. I wasn't given enough repeatable drills, practice routines, swing feels, or progressions that I could take to the range and work on. I ultimately spent about five weeks watching YouTube videos and working on my takeaway and swing on my own. I realized I was spending more time trying to teach myself how to make the changes than I had spent actually learning how to make them during my lessons. That made me question what I was paying for. I decided to ask for a refund and will be looking for a different instructor. I understand that different golfers respond to different teaching styles, and Shane may be a good instructor for some players. However, his approach was not a good fit for me. I felt like he had one particular way he wanted me to swing, rather than working with me to understand my existing swing and giving me a structured way to make changes. I don't have anything negative to say about the facility itself, and the other instructor I interacted with was a nice guy. I may still use the facility when I am ready to purchase new irons. My criticism is specifically about my experience with the lessons. My advice to other golfers would be to take one lesson with Shane before committing to a package. For me, the experience was ultimately discouraging because I wanted instruction that gave me a clear understanding of what I needed to change, why I needed to change it, and--most importantly--how to practice it.

In my experience, the first bay has a lot of trouble reading club data even after applying the stickers to the face. As soon as I went down in loft from my wedges, that data was never picked up. In the third bay, however, it read that data around 80% of the time with stickers. The third bay is closer to the window, so I think the natural light helps the camera pick up the clubhead better. The second bay is the one that James has been using for club fitting and lessons. They use Trackman there. The 4th bay is also GC3 as well, but I haven't hit in that spot yet. Golf balls are tour balls, but are a little beat up. I suggest bringing in your own. The screen you hit into is very close to the mat, so expect golf balls to fly back and out into the shop regularly. James put down a pool noodle training aid behind my bay to help, but know it'll happen. The shop also has a short putting green with SAM Putt Lab to help you get fit. There's a small sitting area and some golf equipment as well. Definitely a place I will regularly visit when I can't get outside!
