First off, let me state that I'm beyond happy with the team here. Now for the details. We were recommended by our breeder up north in Tracy that Taylor Made was a reputable spot in Southern California if we were seriously interested in getting our working line German Shepherd trained for obedience, schutzhund, or protection. I've read countless books on dog training and best practices - however, it never seemed enough or optimal. He had quirks that we didn't know how to address and we also wanted to teach him some games to entertain his mind. We were thinking of protection or schutzhund as a sport too, but didn't have any resources to go to. Taylor Made's team (Ian, Stetson, Liz) have been the most communicative and helpful group I could have hoped for. They provided us a solid foundation and insight toward how we should train our puppy to best meet my needs and my family's. The group obedience class was an eye opener as it addressed issues that I didn't know I was causing by my own training methods. Our puppy's responsiveness to the training was quick as well and there is a noticeable difference after one class. We plan to continue the group obedience but also do private lessons moving forward too so we can learn more about the various sports and higher levels of obedience. I plan to post a follow up down the road - currently, I would definitely recommend this team for training your working line dogs, or any dog for that matter. We got our girl through Taylormade, as well as have sent her through their board and train program. Initially we traded a few text messages with Liz to clarify what we were looking for, and our timeline. Luckily we were able to get the exact breeding pair we had hoped for. Marek and Poll We received good updates as things progressed. Both through direct text messages and their social media. We even got to visit the puppies at about 13 weeks. Liz told us that their goal is to breed animals that are resilient, happy, and environmentally stable and about a year into this, we know she was speaking the truth. We did our first board and Train when our dog, Twyla, was about 5 months old. This is for a 3 week session. We got back a dog that had good foundation for the basics and understood the relationship between doing what was asked, and receiving a reward. At drop off I interacted with Ian who asked a lot of question, helped me understand achievable goals, and did a health inspection. When we picked her up we had a probably 90 minute long session with David who explained to us the various commands and how to help cement the actions into the dogs behavior. I finished my 1st session with Rodney today. Wow! Rodney showed me techniques to work productively with my Blind and Deaf Malinois. My foster pup is between 1-3 yrs old, has never really been pet by humans. Due to her disabilities, she is dependent on her nose, taste, vibrations, and her owners guidance. I used Taylor made working dogs for board and train for 2 months. Upon picking up my GSD he had an injury. I was advised by the trainers there to give it 1 week and he would be fine. I ended up taking him to vet 2 days later to come to find out that his injury was pretty serious to he point that my GSD had to have an SX.FHO surgery. I had reached out to Taylor made working dogs and received replies back. I gave my full authorization for my dog's vet to speak with Kris himself provided all of my GSD X-RAYS, SURGICAL REPORT,COPIES OF VET BILLS, ETC. I was informed by the vet that all he did was harass my dog's vet. I was also advised by my vet that the trauma that my dog went through was due to blunt force trauma to the area. I asked kris Taylor, his wife for copies of their libality insurance to receive nothing from them. Come to find out I'm not sure how this business is even doing business as their FTB has been suspended (C3978091) *** Please be careful*** on who you intrust your pets with! TLDR at the end for those of you who don't like long reviews. For those of you that do, you're in luck. I adopted my dog, Foxy, about 2 years ago. From the little history his rescue had on him, he was a stray in baja mexico that was taken in by an animal hoarder. He had clearly been abused and did not in any way act like a normal dog when I first got him. I had to teach him EVERYTHING-how to eat from a bowl, what a collar/leash are, toys, treats, belly rubs, you name it. Once I was able to get Foxy up to speed on the basics, I figured professional training would be super beneficial for him. Cue Petco. It was good enough for the ultra basics, like sit, down, wait, etc. but Foxy was starting to develop problems and I knew they couldn't tackle them based on our six weeks of training there. If your pup just needs polishing up, it's fine. But most IMO need a lot more. Foxy started to get super aggressive, ESPECIALLY to other dogs. He lunges, growls, pulls on his leash like a wild animal, spins, you name it. It started to come out from what felt like out of nowhere too, so I was super upset. I only wanted him to be well mannered and normal and not feel anxiety at the thought of taking him anywhere. Around this time, his sister's owner that I keep in touch with shared his sister's DNA results with me, and I was confused first and foremost, but disappointed next. He is a chihuahua/GSD mix, with a few others thrown in. I adopted him because I specifically did NOT want a working dog, a high energy dog, a needy dog, none of the above! He had a vet checkup shortly after the results and I asked his vet for advice. She gave me a list of ~100 trainers in the San Diego area that use positive reinforcement and said to call a few. Cue my literal saga here. I called through some from the list, a ton from yelp, and a few from friends suggestions. I would estimate that I called around 50, and I was genuinely shocked at the cost of some of them. $2k for 2 hours? With a "lifetime guarantee" was what I was quoted by a few. Unless you're teaching Foxy to talk, it's a no from me. Some of the others were more reasonable, but were still in the 200-500 dollar an hour range, with weird guarantees or stipulations. A lot of the reasonable ones had ridiculous wait lists of 4-6 months, though, so I was beginning to feel stuck. I decided that if this is going to cost me a limb (which at TMWD it doesn't, thank god!) I was going to find a trainer that specializes in GSD's and can prove it, since it is the dominant breed of his personality. I found TMWD on yelp and decided to call them up. Liz returned my call the following day and I let her know my struggles. She was informative but not pushy, which was refreshing. I set up a consultation for the following weekend on that call. I live in San Diego, so I knew going into training that it was going to be a drive. It's 1000000% worth it to me. I met with Rodney and Foxy, and he was also super informative and not at all pushy. We discussed Foxy's issues and he assured me that he's not truly an aggressive dog and that we can teach him to be better. My anxiety pretty much dissipated at this point. We settled on two private lessons, followed by a group class. Foxy going to a group class was, in my mind, next to impossible, but Rodney had no qualms. Our first private was SO productive. I haven't even had the second yet but I was so compelled to write about my experience. We fitted and used the Hermspringer prong collar on Foxy, which he has never been exposed to before, and I have seen tremendous results. He hated it at first, but Rodney assured me that they all do and to trust the process, and i'm so glad I did. Foxy now pays attention to ME when we walk--not other dogs, not lizards, squirrels, little kids, loud noises, me! In the same day as our first private! He has some more work to do, that is certain, but after having so much anxiety and stress over his behavior for the last two years, I can't believe how much better he is doing, and how much better i'm able to communicate with him after just one hour. Even though we haven't completed our second private or group class yet, based on Foxy's progress now I'm confident I picked the right trainer for him and that he WILL get there. If you're reading this and you've hit a wall like I did; tons of tries of different sedatives, watching every youtube video out there, suffering through sheer embarrassment of your dog's asshole behavior at any public place, tears of frustration, nights of no sleep, sadness thinking your dog will never be "normal" or "happy"--give TMWD a call. I wish I did MUCH sooner. TLDR: My dog was a huge asshole, and one lesson at TMWD and now he isn't. I wish I called them so much sooner! read more

Was absolutely thrilled with my experience with them. Communication is usually very good and I have done training with them in the past. I adore my import puppy from them and the puppy and group classes were amazing. The dog world is a lot of drama and a lot of personal opinions. I have always wanted a TMWD puppy and while my boy might be an inport my future GSD will absolutely be from them. They care so much about their dogs and the litters they produce. Unfortunately our experience with this group was very poor. We did a two week board-in train where they promised solid sit, down, stay and heel, as well as decent recall at a handsome rate. We came home with sit, somewhat reliable down with leash pressure, she didn't pull as badly, but she also had new found aggression, anxiety with prong collars and was a very sick dog who had lost a lot of weight, had diarrhea and vomiting. We were concerned about them not allowing us to see her accommodations but they said they couldn't for liability reasons. We were also concerned about their training time, which they clearly stated was only 10 minutes daily, but they assured us that was plenty. It was not. They were all very nice so we assumed it would work out. We're also not super experienced dog owners. We weren't sure what to make of the results at first and the pandemic struck so we weren't able to reach out to them. They did respond to our request prior to the pandemic to set up a final training session. No one from the company followed up after that to see how things went. We had extensive challenges with the dog. We began working with a second trainer and it was night and day. In retrospect, you can see how impoverished their offering was. Training requires a lot of time and focus. And the harsh corrections they taught were not effective. We reached out to share the experience and to their credit they responded and offered some free lessons. Our confidence in the group was gone though and they refused even a partial refund. We can't recommend using them, much better trainers out there. read more

We take our 5 month old German shepherd here and we absolutely love it. We started going when he was 12 weeks old and I don't think we're gonna go anywhere else! We do obedience and protection training with them and everyone definitely knows their stuff. We worked with Liz and stetson at first for puppy class and right now, we have been working with mostly Gabe for obedience and protection. They are all so kind and answer all my annoying questions without being annoyed! Lol. And best of all, I just love how they show so much attention to koa and really want him to do well. You just don't get that anywhere else. Also we live about an hour away but I think the drive is totally worth it! I completely recommend them if you're looking for some quality trainers!! read more

Be forewarned. The following is a description of our experience with Taylor Made Working dogs. Individual experiences may vary, but this was ours. Please use this information to make your own decision on whether to engage in business with them. We initially reached out to Taylor Made to inquire about a female puppy. We asked a lot of questions about their dogs and their breeding/weening/socialization procedures. They asked no questions of us to verify that we were a good home for one of their dogs. They described their policy as: "We start by putting you on a waitlist for your litter of choice with updates along the way, when puppies are born and on the ground at 2 weeks of age we go down the waitlist and allow the people on the list 24 hours to place a $500 deposit to continue holding their puppy/spot. If they fail to do so we go to the next person on the list." We were delighted to be told that we were being placed on the waitlist and that we were number one on the list for a female from their EE litter and would have the first pick of any females. We marked the calendar for the likely birthdate and anxiously awaited their birth. On April 5th the litter of 8 puppies was born. We were so excited and immediately marked our calendar for the 2 week deposit date. We followed and liked every picture that they posted on social media and commented when we felt it was appropriate. At 6 days of age Liz even texted us a few pictures of one of the females. We were EXCITED! However, we were confused as to why 3 of the puppies were no longer being mentioned (one female), we assumed the worst and did not want to question Liz as this might have been a sore subject. On April 19th, (the 2 week point) we sent an email asking if they were ready for our deposit. They finally responded on the 20th and accepted our deposit. We thought at this point, there would be some discussion about which of the 2 remaining girls we would like to select, knowing full well that temperament testing would occur at 6 weeks and that this particular puppy might not be a match to our home. Instead, we were given pictures of the smallest puppy in the litter. When we asked about the other female that was clearly thriving, we were told that someone else had already reserved her. We were very confused by this. Weren't we first on the list? Didn't we reach out to them to make the deposit? When we asked for clarification, we were informed that the pictures that she sent at 6 days old, was our opportunity to pick out a puppy and that they didn't think we were interested. Please keep in mind that only pictures were sent, nothing in writing about, this being a solicitation to confirm interest in a puppy. Our response to such text (which was sent immediately) was simply "I LOVE THEM!!" and "Thanks for sharing, Liz!" and no further texts were received from Taylor Made asking us to confirm that we were still interested in a puppy or wanted to pick one. Why would we think that we needed to do more, when their policy said this occurs at 2 weeks? We were very upset, but tried to rally and rebuild the lost trust by asking Liz about the health and current development of the remaining female. Unfortunately, the response we received had nothing to do with the health of the puppy that we were being offered, but was more of a complaint that if we had to ask these questions, then we would never be happy with the pup. Now, let me once again clarify that we were never asked about our home or the life that we would provide for the puppy. And now, suddenly, we were being accused of being an unfit home for this puppy because of Taylor Made's inability to abide by their own policy (or even acknowledge their error) and our desire to simply know the state of its health. To their credit, they did refund our deposit. This is clearly not a business that we want to work with. We will be an outstanding home for a pup, however we will be looking for a reputable breeder that follows their own policy, wants to know about us in the best interest of the dog and is willing to communicate with us when we have questions about how the pup is developing while in their care. Again, this is just one person's experience. Please exercise caution. read more

I had two working GSD's years ago but in training a new young dog in a new discipline, I was fortunate to be referred to TMWD. I had contacted multiple training facilities for rattlesnake avoidance and TMWD was the only one that replied. Upon meeting Kris for a rattlesnake avoidance session, I also met our future instructor - Rodney. It was opportune that they also provided both private and group obedience lessons. Rodney was awesome! So energetic, professional, clear and concise in conveying information. My dog and I have made great progress through the weekly goals assigned to us after each lesson. Rodney was able to set up tasks each lesson which we could reasonably accomplish as he introduced more distractions. I was impressed that Rodney was so knowledgeable about various training methodologies and his ability to troubleshoot our issues, offering workable solutions in our new sport. I know we have more work ahead of us to perfect our obedience but I now have a wealth of tools in my toolbox. We look forward to joining the group class! read more

I had been looking for a reputable German Shepherd breeder for a long time. Unfortunately, litters are sold quickly as there are extensive waiting lists. I happened to find Kris Taylor of Taylor Made Working Dogs You Tube videos and website. I left a few voicemails but did not hear anything back, so I emailed him and was happy to receive a prompt response inviting me to come and look at his puppies. I called Kris on Tuesday morning, April 27 and wanted to know if it would be possible to see his dogs. He told me that I could meet with his wife and that , to my surprise. my email correspondence had been with her. That made me feel uncomfortable because the emails were signed Kris Taylor. Maybe it was a mater of convenience but she should have introduced herself and let me know that I was communicating with her. On the phone with his wife now and we made an appointment to meet at their training field at 2:00 that afternoon for me to see the puppies. I asked if the puppies were old enough to leave at 8 weeks and she said yes they were. I was so excited! After purchasing a puppy traveling crate I began my 2 hour drive to Kris' facility in San Diego. When I got there I was greeted not by Kris' wife, but a lady who works for them. I felt uneasy as this was not our arrangement and why wouldn't Kris or his wife want to meet the person who was going to spend $3,500.00 to purchase one of their puppies? Shouldn't they be interested in meeting me for themselves to see what I;m like? I asked the lady if I could see the mother of the puppies and she told me that both the mother and the father weren't on the premises. I grew more uneasy and asked to see pictures of the parents as it didn't show any on the website. We looked at the website on my phone and she couldn't find pictures either. After a quick phone call to Kris she clicked on a link that connected us to another very confusing website. She found pictures of the mother and the father of the puppies and explained to me that the puppies I was going to be choosing from were not from any of Kris' dogs and that he had purchased this litter from a breeder in Temecula. I was SHOCKED! There was NO specific statement on his website that those puppies were from an entirely different breeder and that neither parent is one of his dogs! Perhaps I assumed too much, but to the average person, who are the majority of Kris' customers I'm told, it is very manipulating. The lady felt badly and was caught in the middle. I was extremely disappointed and tried to control my anger as it was not her fault. She asked me if I still wanted to see the puppies that were in the van. I said no, I don't need to fall in love with a puppy and do business with someone who seemed dishonest. During my 3 hour drive home in traffic I spoke to a few reputable breeders, one of whom, was familiar with Taylor Made Working Dogs and after looking at the website was surprised and disappointed that it wasn't made clear that those puppies were from another breeder. He also voiced his shock that the puppies were a cross of working line and show line dogs and that a reputable breeder would NEVER cross the lines. As of yet I still haven't received a phone call from Kris or his wife apologizing, at the very least, for the misunderstanding. I respect ethical breeders now more than ever. If their dogs don't have puppies they will put your name on a waiting list instead of just wanting to sell puppies to sell puppies. People, always do your homework and ask a lot of questions. read more

I used taylormade for board and train, private lessons and group class. I waited just under a year to write my review to see how my dogs behavior would be after my last visits up to Taylormade. Night and day difference. My working line shepherd was aggressive towards all animals and some people as well. It was a nightmare going on walks and her lunging at other animals or just not being able to bring her anywhere public or difficult with people coming over. Luckily that has all changed now and I am able to bring her everywhere with me. read more

Unfortunately I have to give this place a Zero star rating and I'm sure you will all agree with me. Me and my husband had to travel overseas for work reasons - different countries. So, we were looking for the best place for our German Sheppard, 3 years old, to stay. A place where people could not only take care of our baby, but give him the best time! We chose Taylor Made because of their self claimed expertise with German Sheppard dogs and although they are the most expensive we've used so far - that wasn't a concern when it came to the well being of our pet - we just wanted our hearts and minds at peace while overseas. However, as soon as my husband arrived home from leaving him at TMade they called to say the dog had 'escaped'! and that they were looking for him but wanted my husband to return (my husband had to be at LAX within 2hrs to not miss his flight). Fortunately, 15 minutes into the conversation the dog was located and recovered.. OMG what a relief! My husband had to have another shower following the stress and intensity of that call. Now you would think this was it.. but after 3 days without any news of our dog, my husband calls the place to find out how our pet is and all they say is that they LOST our dog, that he was too scared and ran away but they were trying to find him. WHAT? You can IMAGINE how we felt, AGAIN? (how could this happen, how could they be so careless and irresponsible?).  We were OVERSEAS. We could not go back quickly. We were not in vacation.  So, after the amazing help of people from FACEBOOK (just random people that were willing to help), we could find him after long 4-5 days. And obviously, he got giardia, lost weight, we spent at least $1000 dollars in treatments in the vet. Now comes the shock: 'Taylor Made' still wanted to charge us. YES. As they said: they spent time looking for our dog. I still can't believe it. It has been months since it happened and I waited to write this review because, after that happened, our best friend has not been the same. Too scared every time we need to take him to a boarding place; stressed and scared.  I can say that in case you leave your dog with these guys, they may work and do their job - MAYBE. But love? Care? Attention? I couldn't feel any of that coming from them. They didn't even try and contact us when they lost our pet. We only found out about it because We called them (even though both of our mobiles were roaming and contactable whilst overseas). We knew they lost our dog because WE wanted to know how things were going. I'd never take the risk to leave a dog in a place like this one. We managed to do a charge back on the CC Taylor Made used to charge for the stay - because when a refund was requested they refused.. hard to believe I know, but it happened. read more

It just does not get better than this when it comes to dog training. After working with several other dog trainers over the years I was finally introduced to Taylor Made through a friend of mine. The staff are realist when it comes to training and how much they can help you. It may not be what you want to hear but in the long run it is better they are honest and not wasting your time or money. Kris has evaluated a few of my rottweilers and gave him his honest opinion, his honesty was spot on. I have and will continue to recommend Taylor Made Working Dogs to anyone that is in the market. Kris, Liz and the staff at Taylor Made Working Dogs are top notch. I have had many working dogs including German Shepherds, Belgian Malinois and Rottweilers. I have used other trainers in San Diego, but never like them. They truly love their work and have equal patience with dogs and owners. We travel over an hour from Jamul to go there. They helped us change the life of a 2 year old male we rescued and one year later he is amazingly obedient. I met Kris and Jessica 3 years ago when I was in a situation where I had to rehome my dog. Kris, Liz, Gabe & Taylor have all been great help! We take our Crazy Belgian Malinois, Rollo to Taylor Made Working Dogs for training in Protection & Obedience. They are by far the best trainers! We went to petco to try some "obedience" and it did absolutely nothing for our crazy man. If you want a well trained dog, and want a great connection with your dog. They can teach that! We drive an hour there and back every weekend for their training. Great prices too! I recommend TMWD to anyone and everyone! read more

I just met Kris one time for training. He appeared very knowledgable and his advice worked, with one exception; my dog was choking to death. He instructed me to tighten the collar which he proceeded to size for me. He informed me that even though the collar may appear tight, it creates more even pressure points and is less uncomfortable. My dog responded immediately after I put the collar on him and would obey all the commands. However, I noticed after a few days, he stopped barking and was ver quiet and appeared depressed. He would not play , bark and gradually was eating less and losing weight. He would get very nervous when I touched his collar and would not raise his head. So I decided to check the collar. It was poking holes in his neck and were crusted dried blood in several areas. I removed the pinch collar and put a leather one on him loosely and took him to the vet. My vet told me not to go back to this trainer and to put antimicrobial cream on the wounds on his neck twice daily till he got better. In the course of the training session, he never touched my dog and was giving instructions to me on how to give commands from a distance. Be Careful. read more

Posting the same review as my husband since we are both beyond disappointed with this company. We bought 5 group classes after our initial "eval" of meeting Kris - although I was very adamant that I would prefer private. As he is the professional i agreed to give the group classes a try- our first one was okay and mainly had one trainer with my husband and I. Then we went to second and it was beyond hectic and not one trainer spoke to us to let us know what to specifically work on and after that one we figured they had no trainees and would try again the next class- we came back and the trainee said she did not know what to start with so to wait for Liz. We stood waiting for about 10-15 min watching others as they were figuring out the different set ups. at the end we asked Kris to switch to private and he said thats possible and to follow up with him. Fast forward a few weeks after no response- Liz states she has no texts or calls and Kris does not recall that conversation and should have scheduled the private lessons then and there but instead we could do boarding to make up for our puppy not being trained. Although we ended up wasting our money - I would not want to use ANY service from TMWD. she couldn't even call back to explain but texted. very unprofessional from the very beginning and beyond disappointed with the whole experience. Great dog trainer & breeder. If your looking for top quality in your dog training you should check these guys out. They trained our German Shepard for home protection & personal protection. Our dog is still a great pet, but obeys all commands instantly. Before she was very hard to get to follow commands like stay & heel. Now she is the ultimate pet. Great with the kids too. I can't say Enough good things about Taylor Made. We had to take our two-year-old German Shepherd for Borden train and were quite nervous about it at first we had never left him for that long let alone for an intensive training camp. Ian and Rodney were so helpful and reassuring for the entire duration of our dogs stay that it made us feel very comfortable that he was in a loving yet strict environment that wouldn't have him make the changes that he really needed to. Two weeks of board and train we pick him up and he's like a new dog not a new dog just a better version of himself. We are continuing the training that we were told Hass to be done in order to keep the appropriate behavior that he learned why a lot Taylor Made and again Ian and Rodney have gone above and beyond to help us with any questions that we are home alone with a follow up training session. Kris is truly a top notch trainer. Whether it be basic behavior issues, personal protection, or high level competition training, there is not a better trainer. Kris truly wants to see the dogs and handlers succeed and has to tools to get you there no matter what your goals. Along with being great with dogs he is also great with owners and handlers and explains k9 psychology in a very understandable and realistic terms. Kris and Jessica are amazing and very knowledgeable dog trainers. I put all 3 ( husky mixes)of my dogs through their Rattlesnake Avoidance class last May. I am so grateful to them , just the other day during a hike my pups came across a snake in the bushes and reverted to their training and stayed clear . Luckly, it wasnt a poisonous snake but non the less they did as they were taught and left it alone. Now I feel comfortable taking them out on hikes without having a fear of them going after something potentially fatal . I was a completely new German shepherd owner, and very curious on dog sports. Liz invited me up one day to have my evaluation for my dog and she was the sweetest and most kind person I have met so far. She has helped me come such a long way! I recently bought a puppy from TaylorMade Working Dogs who will be trained to be my service dog and I couldn't be happier. They always responded quickly and answered any and all questions/concerns I had. Even my vet was extremely impressed with her breeding and asked me where I got her. We bought 5 group classes after our initial "eval" of meeting Kris - although I was very adamant that I would prefer private. As he is the professional i agreed to give the group classes a try- our first one was okay and mainly had one trainer with my husband and I. Then we went to second and it was beyond hectic and not one trainer spoke to us to let us know what to specifically work on and after that one we figured they had no trainees and would try again the next class- we came back and the trainee said she did not know what to start with so to wait for Liz. We stood waiting for about 10-15 min watching others as they were figuring out the different set ups. at the end we asked Kris to switch to private and he said thats possible and to follow up with him. Fast forward a few weeks after no response- Liz states she has no texts or calls and Kris does not recall that conversation and should have scheduled the private lessons then and there but instead we could do boarding to make up for our puppy not being trained. Although we ended up wasting our money - I would not want to use ANY service from TMWD. she couldn't even call back to explain but texted. very unprofessional from the very beginning and beyond disappointed with the whole experience.
