Service is relatively quick and efficient. The servers were welcoming and accommodating for wine and the food. It's definitely a more popular restaurant but it does cater to tourists more often. We ordered a fried calamari, white wine of the day (Ile de Beauté), a fruits de mer spaghetti, and a bouilloire of mussels. The mussel portions were huge and it came with fries that were very lightly seasoned. The spaghetti was soaked from the seafood, and it was cooked perfectly al dente and the seafood was well seasoned. The shrimp was slightly overcooked but overall, still a good dish. Only disappointment was the calamari. The batter wasn't seasoned and it wasn't coated on the squid well. Overall though, the prices are fair and the service is good, so I'd recommend newcomers to Nice should come here. It's just a bit "normal" where nothing is uniquely Niçoise but you can still find a good dish. read more

Yum! This place was hopping and we were able to snag a table on the sidewalk cafe. The only bad part of dining outside were all the gnats. There were at least six tables who I saw move inside over the course of their meals. But hey, what do you expect for outdoor dining? We ordered a carafe of rose, which was less than 7 euros! We ultimately got two carafes, which equates to four glasses of wine. I got the onion soup to start while my hubby got the warm goat cheese salad. My soup was okay--I wasn't expecting it in a large bowl like I did. But my dinner exceeded expectations! I was in the mood for seafood and pasta so got just that (linguini et les fruits de mer). Great eatery on one of the main downtown walking areas of Nice. We were able to pop in for dinner without a reservation. We sat outside and the service was extremely prompt and efficient. This particular restaurant had a bunch of of different options for those that wanted traditional French cuisine. We each ordered the mussels which was listed as a an appetizer so we were expecting a smaller quantity. Could not have been more wrong. There were probably over 100 small/medium mussels in each pot with a white wine garlic sauce. It also came with a huge plate of fries. La Taverne Massena has been my go to restaurant for at least 10 years. This year I am in Nice for 2 months and have eaten there probably 10 times so far. No, it is not fine French cooking and no it probably won't ever get a Michelin star or even bib. But it is a restaurant with consistently good food and great, efficient and helpful service. I like their pizza aubergine, pave de salmon, filet with frites and many others. Their caramel profiteroles are particularly good! I've been there for lunch and dinner and it's always good. I'll probably continue to go there for another 10 years or so. read more

Just a few steps from one of its sister restaurants, Taverne Massena offers a more upscale seating/servings of the local fare. Offering some grilled dishes, pizza, and pasta. I couldn't resist the mussels in wine, cream, and onion broth. A traditional seaside meal in Europe. I enjoyed it immensely. The mussels were samll and tender. You will spent a great deal of time getting the meat out of all of the shells. (I was the last one done at our table.) Once you are done shucking, the broth and mussels can be eaten like a chowder. A serving of potato fries comes with the meal and fills you right up. I made sure to use some bread to soak up the broth because it is yummy. Plenty of outside seating with heat lamps as the evening cools off. Staff was friendly and courteous. Enjoy. read more

Just a little ways outside of old town 'vieille ville' in Nice. If you take Rue de France/Rue Massena you will hit a lottt of sit down restaurants to have a meal. This one has a nice selection of pretty affordable pizzas (well, affordable for France). The pies come in large semicircular shapes - the dough is so soft and billowy. The cheese is thick and does that lovely string apart thing. The pizza did come with a spiced olive oil but I didn't use it just b/c in general I don't have a lot of trust for those due to possibility of botulism. Service was impressively quick. I was just sitting and enjoying and they were always at hand and foot asking me if I needed anything. The fastest service I got in France, actually especially with bringing me the check and ringing up. This restaurant also didn't seem to have someone out front pressuring you to eat there waving the menu at people which I appreciated. What are those managers thinking anyway - that looking desperate will make people think that's the place to eat? Never went inside so can't speak to the air conditioning and such inside, but there was a lovely breeze outside and the seating was comfortable and clean. There's a view of passerby on the street and other restaurants/shops, but of course not on the beach so no beach views. read more

I wish I can say that I had good food here but it was mediocre at best. This was the first restaurant I went to in Nice. I ordered escargot, frog legs, and spaghetti carbonara. I thought my dishes would be served in a staggered fashion. Not. All of my dishes came out at once. I figured they should know how to make escargot. Not. The snails were over cooked and rubbery. The seasoning was also a bit off. The frog legs were tender but overwhelmingly garlicky. I couldn't taste the actual frog legs. All I could taste was garlic. The carbonara was actually great. I loved the presentation of the raw egg yolk on top. Service was typical French. I have no complaints as my expectations are different when I go to France. My favorite meal in Nice by far! I ordered the moules frites (mussels with fries) and oh my goodness the portion was huge! It comes in a little pot, but don't let the pot's size fool you, there must have been over a 100 little mussels in that thing! And they were the freshest mussels I've ever had! The seasoning was perfect, too (white wine and butter sauce). It came was a large bowl of fries that were crispy and delicious :) my mouth is watering just thinking about this meal! My boyfriend ordered the carbonara, and it was also just as tasty. We had dinner here on our first night in Nice. Yes, it's on the main tourist drag but we were pleasantly surprised to find that the food was pretty solid and the prices reasonable. I would give it a 3.5 stars. For food we had escargots, a white pizza of caramelized onions and bacon and a pasta dish with salmon. Everything was quite good. I loved the pasta and my boyfriend couldn't get enough of his pizza. And of course we enjoyed it along with a bottle of local rose. If you come here I would certainly recommend the pizza or perhaps grille. My pizza with ham and mushrooms was decent. Nice thin crust, and of course I had to add the spicy oil to it. It was good! Hi perhaps the only place I go to on the Massena tourist walk. GOod food, on a consistent basis, and good people. I think I have been there 200 times over the years, and recommend it to anyone looking for a good salad, mouele frites, or Pizza. If you are going to try eating anywhere on rue Massena, look no further and drop into Taverne Massena. While the food is nowhere close to any michelin star ratings, it is a convenient/tourist-friendly/reasonably-priced/clean spot for a casual bite in town and on that particular street. Other places (eg. Milo's, etc) we dropped into had absolutely foul tasting moules and everything else we ate, was simply not memorable. Places like Milo's may look packed because they have a prime street level location on Rue Massena, but be warned that these such places practice extremely hasty service and for what you get on your plate, offer very poor value. Here at Taverne Massena, you can rest assure that you'll can at least get a decent and typical pot of moules frites, salade nicoise, pasta, etc and also a relatively more ambient dining experience. read more

If you insist on dining along this touristy rue, please do not eat here. Walk a little further down the way, for La Maison de Marie, which is in an alley. You will see the sign, and look for the locals eating there. This place, Tavern Massena, is nothing special. I am sure there is a microwave or two in the back, and the sauces are premade. This was the only place we found a rude waiter in over 10 days in France. If you are looking for a pizza, it is probably ok, fresh seafood, or meat, no no no. A couple of friends brought us to this place because it's one of their regular restaurants in Nice. There were five of us. The service was so-so (and it was nearly impossible to get a glass of water), but we got a good table and the food was stellar. We shared a marguerite pizza, a pepperoni pizza, salad, and some pasta. Food was good. This was recommended to be best French onion soup in Nice. We personally weren't blown away. We find bolder flavors with breakthrough sherry taste locally. Got Appy of calamari, not very good -salad, dressing not good -French onion soup was watery with no flavor. Never rec'd our main entrees after hour so complained to mgr, paid bill for what we ate and left. So disappointing to have limited time in Nice and have bad dinner.. Actually no dinner.
