Last night at 12:30 as people pushed around the bar the tough Quebecoise old school bar back kept up a smile and did a better job of keeping track of who was due their booze next than many a trendy cocktail lounge one might name, and cracked jokes and complimented the home made muffins on the bar to boot. Jameson at $5.50, bottle of water at a dollar, bag o chips a buck fifty, ie; no jimmyriggery in the prices of things had my adorable companion declaring it her favourite bar as she prepared for a long night of shows and shows and work on shows and shows... Speaking of the show: we left the bar and pushed up front to join the crowd at the "stage" by the window wondering how the sound would be. Not least because this was no solo acoustic set but the full DIY electro playfulness of a Fixture records showcase: open computer bodies and VHS tapes being played and layered over drum machines and loops and pedals, and you know from what I saw and heard it all worked out. None of the sudden tonal anarchy we were getting from the system at Cagibi earlier in the evening where, let's face it, the wiring is way too old for amps and keys and things. Beaubien held it down and made it's smiling old folks, hustling to bring in ice and serve the kids, well proud. I hope the rest of Pop is a mad success for them and they continue to be a space for great live music up here north of the underpass. Long live Beaubien.

I followed their instructions but they never replied on whether they had written the reservation down. I showed up and asked before ordering if it was ok. The man at the door said it was ok and I was seated and served by a different man. I ordered the chicken fingers with a side of poutine and an ice tea. Once I was done I let my new server know I should be getting the meal free but would pay for any extra like the poutine and the ice tea because those probably weren't included. He said he had no idea what I was talking about and that I should've waited to be invited before coming in for my birthday meal. I showed him the conversation and he said that because they didn't answer I shouldn't have shown up. His hands were tied and he couldn't anything about the promotion. He even laughed as I was explaining it. I'm not sure what he thought was funny but he informed me that they don't do the free meal on your birthday if you're alone. Thanks for shaming me there. I'm allowed to get lunch by myself. No need to make me feel awful. While paying I at least got to use my 20% card. He laughed at that too. Bro, I'm a university student. I'm pretty sure that's your target clientele seeing as your menu is 5$. So maybe don't laugh. He even punched it in wrong because 20% of 9.96 is $2 off not $1. Truly awful management. And the server was the same I had last time. He's polite in a brash way. Makes you feel like he's only doing it because it's his job. Not because he's actually a nice person. It's not like this is the only place with 5$ meals anyways. You're better off elsewhere. Food like theirs is sub par compared to everything Montreal has to offer.

But for the atmosphere and live music performances I totally recommande it but not for the current menu in my opnion at least

You want to be brought in and it's dark and moody with the BEST craft cocktail list. The theme is duck - which is so fun. Our bartender was OUTSTANDING. He gave not only the best drink recommendations, but also gave us a hand written list of his favorite spots in MTL (drinks, dining, activities, etc). I wish we would've gotten his name because I cannot praise him enough!

The Coldroom is a fantastic bar and definitely worth visiting. We actually ended up going twice…read moreduring our trip, and each visit was a little different. The first time, the music was extremely loud, and it seemed like they were short-staffed. The bar was completely packed, and there was only one bartender making drinks, so the wait was a bit longer than expected. We decided to give it another try, and I'm so glad we did. The second visit was amazing! The bartender working that night was incredible--she clearly knows her craft and made our drinks quickly without sacrificing quality. Every cocktail was delicious, and the overall experience was much more enjoyable. Overall, I highly recommend The Coldroom. My only suggestion would be that, with a space that busy, the bar could really benefit from having an additional bartender during peak hours. It would help keep wait times down and make an already great experience even better.
