We should have recorded it. Other patrons were laughing so hard and amazed by our improvisation. I really appreciate the care and diligence the staff put into making sure I was safe in Montreal especially since I was a solo female traveler. Parking was easier than other Montreal areas. I was able to dine at a restaurant prior to the show. The bar didn't have food service. I will definitely go back when I revisit Montreal. I felt safe.

When everyone went out for a smoke break in between sets, we went right up to the front of the stage area to get a great spot for the headliner. There was space in the back for them to set up the merch tables, and there's tables on the sides of the venue that are for those who wish to sit (not many, but a couple). I'm not sure what it would be like on "calmer" nights but for what it was, it was fun.

I somehow thought they would collect it at the door, but it was added to my bar tab. Good idea, efficient, they surely don't do that here! I was hoping to sit at a table, but they told me a previous party was still there, so they sat me at the bar, with my back to the music! I was not happy with that but since I was there by myself maybe it was to be expected? The place reminded me of The Green Mill here in Chicago, another intimate jazz club, except they serve food here as well. I had eaten earlier so I only got drinks. I sampled one of the local beers and had a cocktail. The bartender was helpful and friendly. The Alex Bellegarde Trio came on and were great. Other guests came up for a jam session, one of my favorite things about jazz. The place was not easy to find on public transportation, but maybe that's bc I took the train and walked. The area was nice, artsy and busy even at 11:30 at night. I'd go back next time I am in Montreal, but maybe take a Lyft or Uber.

Pre-sale tickets were around $21.50 CAD a piece. We had a booth right in front of the band. The hostess spoke French at the door and quickly translated to English for us. The MC spoke French and the band performed in Spanish. We were ready for it all with our translator app. We really enjoyed the singers and the entire band. They were really good; especially the guy in the middle absolutely killing it with his dance moves, the cow bell and other instruments! The band also surprised us with students from a dance school who were there to perform and interact with the audience. They pulled people from the audience to dance along. What an amazing night of music and culture. We are glad we went.

Our nightlife is what makes our city and I really hope the provincial and federal government get together behind some actual coordinated support for these crucial local businesses. I can't speak to La Tulipe as a club since I've only been here for shows, I've seen Bluelight Burlesque productions here and recently came to see Daniel Ash and Kevin Haskins of Bauhaus/Tones on Tail/Love & Rockets fame and it was just the perfect place to see them for what turned out to be an amazing show full of nostalgia and tunes I thought I would never hear live again. There's an area near the stage where those who want to take in the show in general admission form can go and stand (be careful because slam-dancing always inevitably breaks out) and tables further back where you can sit, sip your drinks and take in the show leisurely. Drinks are reasonably priced and the crowd is pretty chill. I'll have to come here some Saturday night so I can check out 80s night.

I wasn't disappointed with La Tulipe (if you don't count the remixed version of Miami Sound Machine's Conga). The music was eclectic, from U2 and New Order to B52s, Human League, The Cure, OMD, Joan Jett, and aforementioned MSM, plus a few cusp acts like Boney M, Michael Jackson (when he was still black), Deee Lite. It was like going back to my students days :). As I also spent a year in France at the time, I enjoyed hearing a smattering of hits by Les Rita Mitsouko, Niagara and Indochine. The crowd was also eclectic: with people who were there in the 80s, their kids, and those in between, as many English speakers as French speakers, I'd say. There was a pick-up vibe I have rarely seen in Montreal, but nothing overly intrusive. Still, if you are looking to hook up with someone, the chances are you could... Entrance fee is now $8, and drinks were regular bar prices. Service was quick and friendly. I'm definitely going back!

When we checked in, we were given a short interview about our food and beverage preferences, etc... After a short wait we were greeted by our server who led us into the pitch-black dining room. We could hear other diners around us chatting, laughing and having a great time. We were seated at a table and quickly found our tableware. Our beverages arrived shortly after and I used my cocktail as my anchor to know where things were. When the food arrived, we didn't know what it was since we had opted for the mystery choice. It was very good, intriguing and perfectly cooked. We both had to feel our food a bit to see if there was any left on our plates. But, it certainly wasn't messy and we never spilled or dropped anything. The drinks were craft as well and perfectly balanced. After 2 hours, we were done and led back out into the main room where the normal lighting was quite bright and took us a few minutes to adjust to. On the way out our server told us what we had enjoyed, and I asked the bartender what she had made for us. A great experience in the Boho part of Montreal and highly recommended!
