The place is very hipster but loved the laid back vibe. You order at the bar so don't expect a server to come to you when you sit down. They have a good mix of drinks (beer on tap, bottled beer, cocktails, bubbles, wine and non-alcoholic). There's even a few snacks. - Radler ($6.00) - blonde beer and grapefruit soda. A solid refreshing, summery radler. Easy drinking. - Bourbon lemonade ($10.00) - Maker's Mark and lémo lemonade. Also good but you can taste the bourbon. - Rhubarb soda with vodka - this was their other special but they ran out halfway through making my drink. Luckily, they were nice enough and gave it to us on the house ($9.00 regularly). Tasted like a watered down version of vodka soda. - Chardonnay (Castor) (6.8%) ($7.00) - never heard of a beer being called a Chardonnay before but it was good. Read up that it's aged in Chardonnay barrels (interesting). Smelled great; I got hints of floral and citrus. Apparently it's a sour/wild ale. Fun spot. Cash only!

Due to it being a holiday especially on a Friday night, I'm sure staff was psyched at the possibility of making good tips which I can totally understand. What I cannot understand is why my drink was arrogantly taken away from me by the bartender I ordered it from simply because I didn't add a tip! I feel so old school, but to me a tip is based on quality of service. Here's what happened. Anyone who has patiently waited to order a drink at a bar only to get overlooked deliberately when it's obvious you were next, knows how annoying that can feel. But now we have to tip for this, or else?! There was a female bartender taking orders. As I stood waiting at the front, I noticed a guy in front of me behind the bar focused more on cleaning than taking orders. I assumed he was the bar back. Several minutes after I first noticed him and after the girl kept going to others, he finally decided to acknowledge the fact that I was there and took my order. Because the girl bartender made direct eye contact with me yet chose to go to someone else I decided not to add a tip. As I went to pay the guy I noticed the debit machine did something weird after I selected no tip. The bartender swooped in with the quickness. He took the machine from me and said obnoxiously, "You didn't pay a tip?!" and swiftly put his nasty hands over the drink and pulled it back. I told him I wasn't adding a tip when I was deliberately passed over. I asked why would I tip for poor service? He then had the nerve to accuse me of now being in the way of others (how effing obnoxious!). Right on cue this dude stepped up in perfect entitled fashion. Like an idiot, I actually went to explain myself to him. To my surprise this kid declared, "You have to give a tip!" All I can say is we are truly some obnoxious F-ers to think we deserve something for nothing. It's like getting spit in the face and than thanking the person who did it. Totally goes in line with the A hole standards of the day! Never going back.

As we continue our visit to Montreal this week, we had our first sub-par experience. Friends who…read morelive in the area told us that L'Barouf was one of their favorite bars, with plenty of beer on tap, a good negroni, and free popcorn. Well, it may be a great place for locals, but not so much for tourists based on our experience. We walked in the front door on a rainy mid-afternoon and the place was fairly empty (as one might expect at that time of day) with only a single person at two separate tables and two more people sitting at the bar. My wife and I took seats at the bar as well and the bartender walked over to us, perfunctorily handed us a couple of drinks menus, and hovered over us until we made a selection. She apparently was in a hurry to get back to her conversation with the two local women at the other end of the bar. My wife ordered a glass of sauvignon ($8) and I ordered a Kilkenny cream ale ($9). The bartender returned with our drinks, placed them down in front of us without saying a word, and then went back to the other end of the bar. You could almost feel a shiver in the bar, our reception was so cold. It was if we were intruding on her life. Our interaction with the bartender aside, I do have to say that our friends were right; there is an impressive number of beers on tap here. I thoroughly enjoyed my Kilkenny cream ale, which was absolutely delicious, and I would have ordered another one if I could have gotten the bartender's attention. My wife, on the other hand, just wanted to finish her wine and for us to leave and find a friendlier bar to hang out in. (Which we eventually did. Stay tuned for that review.) I finally got the bartender's attention, signaled that I would like to pay, and she sort of sighed as if to say "okay let's get this over with so you can leave and I can go back to what I want to focus on instead of you..." Believe me, at this point the feeling was mutual.
